Damn. Now we could get a devout bhuddist as PM and suffer more clamp downs on things we enjoy

Yes, it's official. I just hear it at the radio when I was driving back from work. Exactly what I expected. So now, what will happen ?

What will probably happen is that one of Thaksin's cronies will be appointed the next PM and the turmoil will only increase. As for Thaksin, he and his billions will probably wind up in some friendly nation that values money over principle (that's a big choice).

If the opposition does gain power, they will go looking for scapegoats and farangs may be easy targets. Expats should not feel too complacent on this issue. Your tenuous hold on property may be more shaky if a new leadership launches a vendetta on the evils of foreign influence (a common asian refrain).

Just as an aside, Thaksin mentioned that the King's 60th anniverary begins in early June. I think we can anticipate a week of major service disruption and a huge boost in Mehkong sales that week?

Cheers,
Ronno

Mhhh... What will happen to the Thai economy? How will behave the Stock Exchange of Thailand?
I just wonder because most of my investments are in Asian funds...

Well you should be happy as Asian Funds outpaced US and Euro zone over last 2 years.

Specifically wrt to Thai stocks - I think priced in ... SET up 1% today and THB stregthened. No risk of currency crises as BOT has $55bio in reserves.

I guess the only thing you have to worry about is Thaksin leaving Thailand and taking all his money with him.

Market, baht up on PM's decision to quit

From the Bangkok Post this morning:

Shares at the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) jumped to their highest level in about three months at the open of trade on Wednesday after caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra offered to step aside to defuse political crisis.

The SET index, the main index, rose 22 points or 3% to 767 and the trading value recorded at 21 billion baht in the first hour of trade. The index is at its highest since late late January.

The baht also rises to the highest level since March 2005 on optimism after Thaksin decision to quit.

On Tuesday night, Thaksin said that he would not accept premiership when parliament convenes following Sunday's snap election.

He will remain caretaker premier untill then.

thaksin

of course, thaksin has left himself a little door open: he will only resign fully, when parliament is completed -- that means, that all seats will have to be filled, eg the opposition must end their boycott for elections. Anybody smells a rat here?

And it would not be the first time that somebody changes his mind "after the fact"...
