it is great fun to len nam at songkran but the most i have managed is 2 days worth and probably a total of 8 hours or so.
I would like it only during the day tho - its a sunny kinda thing to do with all the lovely BGs in their soaking skimpy outfits
I won't miss all the gay guys wiping perfumed powder in face (eyes) though.

Hi,
I am arriving in Bangkok this weekend for the first time (a few days there and then a week in Pattaya), what a time to arrive for a newbie ! Is there a timetable to this water splashing, I hope they are not doing it at night, or are they ?
Not really woried about the water, but I wear contact lenses and the last thing I want is dirty water in my eyes. Also I think sharp ice bits in water and powder is just not fair play....
I hope there are some places open in Bangkok this weekend otherwise it would be a total waste of a trip.
A.

Uneven waterpower balance
The rich farang spoiled brats kids with latest in water guns, big belly mangnum
3776 pump action or fully automatic.....The patong kids with old garden hoses
or plastic bottles or just buckest filled with water as always...purchased a whole stock of plastic guns and had a lady distribute it to some very happy kids...Even if that cost me several bottles of remy martins the feeling was great....This religious water festival are for the thai people....

well i was on bangla today with a few mates and i had great fun, great atmosphere but i think they should only have the water fights during the day and not at night because its gets really cold. i loved splashing BG's on their tits and then having a butchers through their t-shirts
me and 4 mates were lined up on nanai road earlier in the day, we all had guns and pots and whatever and were drowning everyone that passed. anyway one german guy drove past on a bike with a laptop bag on his back with his notebook inside and my mate through a bucket of water over him, anyway he stopped the bike and started shouting "oh ya i have a laptop worth 70000baht in this bag you stupid idiots", my mate said "your the ****ing idiot for taking it out with you on today of all days" and through another bucket of water straight over him and told him to "jog on". it was class.
we came across a few miserable sorts who were complaining when they got soaked, what the hell did they leave their house for if they didnt want to get it
all in all i had a super day and am just getting ready here to head to taipan
happy new year to you all
alan

Thats the whole problem with it, when you live there life does have to go on, and even includes going out and getting to the office or meeting clients, some things just cant be put off. I know if it was me and my laptop, the laptop would get wedged somewhere very uncomfortable for the water thrower.
Almost had the same situation happen to me when carrying a laptop the other year, but it was 3 days before the whole bullshit was due to start. Boy did that asshole cop it.
Tourists just dont understand, and the whole thing just gets totally out of control.

Agree 100%.
Dont mind the water during Songkran, but when tourists continue after the thais have stopped, it gets annoying...

A few years ago a Finnish lady working on the embassy in BKK had to do some official business. She came out into the street and a boy throw water and powder on her. She spanked the boy. It was in all the newspapers and she had to appologise. I think it should have been that boys parents and the boy who should have appologised for doing that

I agree to a certain extent with Stevem's point, Especially when somebody starts throwing the water around a couple of days early or continues it a couple of day after the event, I can understand how people that live there would be highly pissed off with it..... But not yours Captain, Because I am assuming this young boy was Thai? And even if he was'nt, It is Songkran after all, And it is well known what happens on this day, So IMO she was bang out of order, And should have been charged with assault....

Original Thai Songkran was not like this. And not all people are on hollidays and like playing with water. Some people work in Thailand, and can not go out in t-shirt and bermuda those days.

Everything changes over time, And you cannot compare Songkran of old to how it is today, You just have to accept it when you are in Thailand, Its there country, And there custom, So you either deal with it, Or leave...
I can understand she must have been angry but to react in the way she did, Well thats totally unaceptable IMO to assault a young boy for it, Who didnt know any better and was just celebrating the Thai new year, She should have been charged for it...
If she had a problem with what he did, Then she should have contacted the police if she thought he was out of order, Thats what happens in any country, Anywhere in the world...

She appologised, so case closed.
But I try to avoid Songkran. Seen it and doesn't need to see it again. If I am there for Songkran, I move with a taxi in BKK, and I don't go near where there are waterfights. In Phuket, I take a tuktuk, sit in the front with door locked, and move from my hotel to Rio/Rock hard in the evening and back.

Dont get me wrong Captain, I can absolutly understand why you do your best to try and avoid the water, Songkran is not for everyone... But if you get a bit of water thrown at you during it, You should not complain and certainly not lose your temper and attack someone, As everybody should know full well what happens during this time, Thats all I am saying...
