About one third of the male adult population globally smokes (WHO statistics). So yes it is a minority, but quite a substantial one.

Simple solution.
All you non smokers who whinge and whine about smelly rooms etc.
A simple solution to the smelly hotel room.
Hold your breath while in your room. End of problem.

This is where the whole debate comes undone. Us non smokers do respect the smokers right to smoke, but the smokers dont give a toss about the non smokers right to clean air.

I believe Tasmania was the first with the No Smoking Law for Public Areas.
It is now 3 metres from a dooway or public access and 10 meters from an air vent.
Note: No footpath in Tasmania is 3 metres wide so smokers have to go to about the white line in the middle of the road.
I'm a non smoker but about 50% of my mates are (you should see them outside the pub on a 0 degree Tassie night trying to have their smoke before they freeze their A off)
And the Law is about to get even more detailed and rigid.
As for the hotel rooms...I believe most hotels have smoking and non-smoking rooms/floors? I just ask for a non-smoking room (never been caught out yet)

This was always gonna be a contorversial discussion. I went to thailand with a mate. I am a smoker my friend is not. I did smoke in the hotel room but in one area by a window and i would have one before we went out at night while he was getting ready and one after we got up for breakfast Ermmmmm ok lunch might be a better word or was it dinner . I dont like stale smoke in the room but i also sometimes like to have cigarette in the room. 1 or 2 is fine beng considerate but just constantly smoking in there is just not thoughtful for the next person who has to sleep in there.
Anyway who is gonna spend a lot of time in there room smoking plenty of better things to do in Thailand. Go to bar drink and smoke

I am a non smoker who gave up 10 or so years back.. Smoking itself doesnt bother me (except if its at a meal.. My mother will spark up between courses and if she finishes before mewhile I am still eating etc.. Really dislike that !!!) and I have no problem with mates smoking in my house but I hate the lingering after smell that comes from low ventilation / ashtrays etc..
I would be very happy with a non smokers room policy in a hotel.. I would consider that a big enough plus mark that it could effect my future bookings (one reason I wont stay in the dynasty in BKK is it stinks of fags in my experience)..
So your pretty divided on peoples opinions.. Damned if you do and damned if you dont.. why not start with say 25% smokers rooms and see if thats enough.. If it isnt you can see which way the wind blows and increase the rooms for smokers if you see its needed and remain adaptable..

But you say you respect our right to smoke, But do you really? Its easy to say but on the other hand you want us to make "all" the consessions for you non-smoking guys, You dont want us smoking in Hotel rooms or if we do, Go and do it on the balcony or open a door and a window, You dont want us smoking in Restaurants (I could accept that), You dont want us smoking anywhere near you, Im very suprised nobody has asked us to stop smoking in bars... Thats what I get sick of, People telling me where I can and cant smoke, Its my right to smoke, Im not doing anything against the law, So you have to deal with it, Until a time comes when it changes..
PS: You talk about your right to clean air? Let me ask you, Do you drive a car or bike? I dont but yet I have to put up with all the smoke and pollution which is far worse coming from you guys, Do you hear me complaining about it?

but ally, i understand that smokers could get frustrated with all this but you compare it to driving a car or motorbike. in most cases, driving is a neccisity, whereas smoking is a habit, or luxury so i dont think that analogy holds up
and to be honest, as a smoker, i dont think its unfair being told where you can smoke if it is effecting non-smokers

Smoking is an necessity for me Paul, If I dont smoke then I tend to lose my temper a lot, Smoking calms me and keeps me on the straight and narrow... But for me driving is not... I walk everywhere or get the bus, Instead of a car you could get a pushbike like they all have in China
You know in most citys around the world they have a thing called "Public Transport" and if everybody used it like I do, Then there would be less pollution for my lungs... You might not think its unfair to be told where to smoke, But I do especially when it gets to the stage when you have to crawl into a corner to do it (Because if you cant smoke in Restaurants, Bars, Hotels etc.. There is not to many places left), And It pisses me off, As I said, Im not doing anything illegal and pay a hell of a lot of taxes for my privilage to smoke.

I do agree that we smokers need to take some considerations. Smoking 10 cigs just before check-out is simply not polite IMO. It also my legal right to crap on the floor, but I do not. Well.. rarely anyway.

On how much potential damage it could cause, you mean? Yup. A bit unfair to the whole global warming stuff to be compared with smelly hotel rooms

If you really think about it Paul, Thats a much more serious problem than us smokers, Its on a whole different level, I would go as far to say as at least 75% of people who use cars could easily you Public Transport and save my lungs from being more polluted, Do they stop and think about me when they drive there cars? You better believe they dont... Am I am serious you ask? Well thats exactly what I thought when reading some of the replys on this thread to smoking, If some of them are serious then yes I am...

Your right Paul, Its not the same, Car pollution is extremely worse, And much more of an issue for my health..
No Paul, The 75% is non-essential travel, They are people who could easily use Public Transport (some may lose an hour or so but lets way up the benefits to this 1hr or 2?) or get off the fat arses and walk down to the shops, But they choose not too and thats there right, Its not illegal to drive a car, Same way its not illegal to smoke, But if someone is going to try and impose there opinions on me and claim to there right to "Clean Air" then why is it so ridiculous for me to do the same, We are all equal are we not?

In California no smoking in clubs and restaurants allowed and hotels have smoking and non smoking rooms
and unluckily public transportation sucks here.

Same here, No smoking in Bars and Restaurants, I dont have a problem with that, Except when it is pissing down and freezing cold outside, But I can live with it... And then they tried to implement it across all hotels here, But that failed as some people live in hotels and its against there humun rights to have to leave there "Homes" in effect to smoke
So Smoking and Non-Smoking rooms in hotels here aswell, And lastly onto Public Transport, You know everybody says the same thing about it in there countrys, Its shit here blah blah blah, Sorry but IMO, Thats a cop out, Its works for everybody else who cannot afford to buy a car so why is it not good enough for the rest?
