Smoking in hotel rooms.

On my last trip I booked a suite room in a guesthouse....separate bedroom, full kitchen, lounge etc...very nice. I only stayed there for approx 6 hrs as the placed absolutely wreaked of cigarette smoke. The cleaners aired it out before I moved in & then I opened up all of the doors and had the air cons and fans going and sprayed with air freshener. I then went out for dinner & when i came back & opened the door the odour was unacceptable so I told the management I couldn't stay there & they moved me to a small room that was available & they were very appologetic.
This really annoyed me as I couldn't stay where I had booked & the guesthouse lost money due to the previous "guest" having stayed there for 28 days & at a guess smoked 2 packs a day inside the room with door & windows closed.
In case anyone is thinking "ex smoker" yes I am but def not an antismoker if anyone wants to smoke no problem with me (I still remember that when I smoked & I wanted a smoke "I f@cken well wanted one") But for f@ck sake open a door or window in your hotel room.

Same here and I am a current smoker. In my home I always go outside when the urge is closing in on me. I’ve also demanded a change of rooms because of the cigarette smell. But then again, in some of the places I’ve stayed I couldn’t even open the freakin’ window. If there even was one, as has also been the case.

Cool Smoking and non smoking

I have been to a few hotels in Thailand where they actually offer a smoking wing and a non smoking wing.(Asia Pavilion in Songkhla) As a non smoker I opted for the non smoking area and the room was really fresh.

It may be worth while puting in your preferences when you do booking enquiries.

I've been in hotels where the rooms with aircon don't have windows that open, for example, the Expat. For me, breathing ari that is filtered by air con is almost as bad as beathing cigarette smoke. Well, maybe not that bad, but I still hate it. So when I get an aircon room, since most places don't have the overhead fan rooms anymore, I simply have to have a window that opens. I'll keep it open while the aircon runs, if necessary. Not energy efficient but have to have fresh air!!!

I also stayed in a room in BKK with no windows. Very freaky. The nice thing was it was very quiet, but could on stay there as short as possible(2 nights). Too weird!!!

same same. I hate the smell of smoke (cigarette or cigar) in the house or car.
I'll always go outside to smoke and never in a hotel room or anyones home.

The room in question had the smoke smell in the curtains, lounge etc so difficult to get rid of. It was like the smokey smell of clothes after a big night out.
But if you can't open a window then the fault lies with the hotel.

Although I do sympathise with the non-smokers, I do like a cigarette every now and again (after sex and with my first coffee in the morning), and I don't see why I should have to open a window just because the next occupant may be a non-smoker. Where the hotel provides an option I will ask for a smoking room, but if they don't segregate then tough; I have paid to use that room as much as the next guy and I will use it as I see fit.

I like this discussion and well for a reason. I am in the progress of opening my new hotel in Patong and have not made a decision yet about a possible smoking policy. At the moment I am leaning towards no smoking in rooms but further everywhere, including restaurant, landings (including seating areas) and pool deck.

What is your opinion?
Should I allow smoking in rooms or not? Or should I have 1 or 2 rooms available for the die hard smokers?

Thanks!

But if restaurant is open air, lounging, non airconditioned? Difficult to stop smoking in a place like that...

So your guess is that a non smoking rooms (rooms only) policy is bad?

I'm definitely for the non smoking in the rooms, OK the smokers amongst us will say they wont stay there, but lots of others will. Whilst I respect everyones right to smoke, I find nothing more replusive then to walk into a hotel room and the whole room smells like an ashtray.

40% of my small hotel will have balconies. For the smokers.... Would that be a solution to the 'problem' of a non smoking policy in the rooms?????
Rooms will be same price to the non balcony rooms so that would not be an issue...

I do not think he will gain as much as he will lose, though, in terms of customer base. Most people just don't care. But smokers DO.

Smoking on balconies only might be a compromise even I would be willing to accept.

I am a smoker and I just find this laughable to be honest...

ToTheBeach, If you made your hotel a non-smoking hotel, I would never stay there regardless of balconys or not...

I am with Coolhand on this, I pay for my room and always ask for a smoking room when booking beforehand (As I am sure all smokers do), So its the hotels problem, Not mine, So I dont see reason why I should suit anyone else by having to get up and go out onto a balcony or open a window while I am having a smoke, Sure by opening doors and windows, You are letting all the mozzies in, And your fcuked if you think I am getting bitten left, right and centre to satisfy some non-smoking bollox I have never met

In restaurants, I agree they should be non-smoking or have a little section off to the side with a smoking area, I, And people might find this strange, Even as a smoker hate somebody blowing smoke into my face or smoking around me, Especailly while I am eating, And when it happens I just get up and move...

Hehe i did answer on this post before but i deleted it because i was thinking this smell of smoke thing was a little overreaction.

For the first i dont want to open my door or window at my hotel room.
i pay for it and i pay for smoking in it.

I can understand if somebody blow smoke in your face or smoke at your tabel when eating or so it can be disturbing and should be avoid.
That is just normal behave
But making noise of sombody have smoked in your room a couple of weeks before ?

I dont anderstand how some people can travel and be in big citys like Bkk
or London etc where the contamination is wery high when they have problems with 14 days old smoke smell.

But i am a smoker and take my smoke with clean conscience and always
point out that i want a smoker room when i travel.
And that is what i am paying for.

And yes old/past smokers is the worst when it comes to this issue
and spesially from some particular countries.

Ahh need a smoke

BY THE WAY. ALLY DIDENT YOU QUIT .....

Its laughable to me (In a get a grip on yourself sort of way, Not a funny one) as a smoker that I should have to think about the next person that has to stay in my hotel room that I booked, And payed good money to stay in, Especailly when I ask to book a smoking room, Thats what I asked for, And thats what I payed for, Its not my problem how the next person feels about the room, Thats down to the hotel, Not me...

I get pissed off with people telling me what I can and cant do...

Thumbs up Non smoking rooms

I am a non smoker and I would rather stay in a non smoking room. I think that setting aside a certain amount of rooms per hotel for smokers is a good way to appeal to both smokers and non smokers.

Non smoking communal areas are a must. Nothing worse than eating in a room full of smoke.

Its just a matter of personal choice.

As far as I am aware , a law was brought in at the beginning of the year that any "enclosed air conditioned restaurant" must be no-smoking. The coffee shop at the Expat is now enforcing this rule , and as a smoker I will abide by this decision. But , in an "open-fronted" place I will smoke , not when I am sitting with people having a meal (only polite ) , but after the meal or when having a coffee.

The situation with hotel rooms is different , a lot of places now have "non-smoking" rooms, and I can see that this could be a solution . But where there is no policy in place , I feel it is the responsibility of the hotel to ensure that rooms are properly cleaned and "aired" between guests. As for "allowing" guests to smoke on balconies, firstly this would be difficult to enforce , and secondly , there would be the problem of people smoking in "inappropriate" areas , which could lead to a greater fire risk.

As a smoker, which at this present point in time is perfectly legal , I do find it objectionable that I am treated as a second class citizen/criminal , I would never stay in a hotel with a total no-smoking policy , as some BM's seem to think a good idea. If there is no smoking in room , restaurant , "communal" areas , then where do I go to partake of this legal activity.

I agree that this is a no-win situation , but until a law is brought in making smoking illegal , I will continue to smoke in any area that does not have a specific ban. And if others object to the smell of cigarette smoke in hotel rooms , then they should take the matter up with the hotel and ask they they ensure rooms are cleaned properly. I pay the exact same as non-smokers , and as such have the exact same right to do what I wish in my room.
