Question Nanai Rd

I was curious about the Nanai Rd area. It gets a mention from time to time but not in any great detail. Is this just a hotel/ residential area or does it have an entertainment scene as well, ie shops bars etc. I didn't venture down that way on my one and only previous trip so I was wondering if it was worth checking out.

yep to all of the above Glory.....it has shops bars and everything you want.....cheap hotels usually for longer stays and low priced for Thais....has much more of a thai feel to it and also many falang choose to live up there as it has a local community and is a little out of the more hardcore nightlife...

If you don't mind a bit of a (longish) stroll to bangla or a tuk tuk ride to the beach..........you may want to try it........it has it's own charm.......and lots of Bgs live up there too!!!..now that is an attraction in itself no!!!

I live in a Soi off Nanai, and there is nowhere else I'd rather live in Patong. So so close to everything you need but far enough away for it to be quiet day and night.

Plenty of small reataurants and bars around, and loads of shops dotted around. You also have the Mae Ubol market for good cheap food, and Banzaan market which is great for fresh seafood and anything else you need.

I'd recommend having at least a bike to get around with if you were to stay up there for any length of time though, depending on where you are it could be a very long walk to Bangla or the beach.

Agree with everything except that its a 'thai feel'.. Its still patong and patong is hardly thailand..

That said its my favorite place to be a resident.. Lots of shops and small cheap eateries.. Bars like the Offshore, Beach House bar, The P Bar, etc.. Mostly expat or long stayers.. Where the girls live and relax in the day.. Its just that little bit more 'real world' than Bangla and beach Rd..

Actually, that should read, "up that way," not "down that way," as it is up on the hillside!

It may not be the real LOS, but it is sure not as plastic as The Beach Road, as adult-Disney as Bangla, or as rapidly turning upscale as Rat-U-Thit!

On my first trip l hardly ventured from beach Road

Second and third trips Rat-u-chit Rd also came into play

Subsequent trips after that l have discovered Nanai Road....kinda amusing how the more trips you have Patong seems to have more of a community feel about it after you work your way back from Beach Road........plus it's a lot cheaper...isin't it Sir Gez

Yep - I stayed in Tana Patong which is set back up Sansabai. Nice hotel but only drawback was a goofy Australian staying there at the same time (pain in the @rse).

I ventured up to Nanai for a look round and regularly used an internet cafe which was cheaper than those around the main tourist area. If you are on a short holiday (less than 3 weeks) then I guess that Nanai might not suit unless you are on a tight budget.

If you get a place in the right part of Nanai, then the walk to Bangla could only be 10 mins.

Certainly walking around Nanai wouldnt appeal much but MB taxi's are as always everywhere and I cant imagine being around without a scooter to explore..

As mentioned Mae Ubol market is a great place to dine al fresco and cheaply.. And the community vibe is much larger.. The offshore is a very welcoming little drinking hole and good spot to watch the world (and girls) go by..

Somehow Nanai Rd feels very much 'home' to me now.. More than the years I lived in Holland and Belgium etc.. Last time I was off the island for a few days as I came back along Nanai seeing all its net cafes, laundrys resturants and bars and getting my name hollered about 5 times in the one trip along it out of bars and by people around on bikes really made me feel effection for this crazy little town..

Know how that feels, spent a few days in KL recently, and not that I didn't enjoy myself, but when the taxi turned into Nanai and I saw a few familiar faces I felt like I was coming 'home'

Friends that have visited have not really felt anything for Nanai, other than a place with guesthouses etc.. which I think is understandable. The longer you spend here, I've only lived in Nanai for 10/11 months so far, the more you fit in and get to know a few people just from doing the daily chores, and riding about.

Was thinking of moving out of Patong to Kathu or Chalong somewhere for the cheaper rents and bigger houses, but think I would really miss the atmosphere of Nanai and having everything so close in Patong if I do need to venture out is a huge bonus, whereas most other areas would demand a car for getting about imho.

I actually live in Holland/(Belgium before), and even i feel more at home when we arrive at Nanai then over here. I just love sitting at Nanai and see all the girls walking, go to laundry (in there little daytime jumpsuites ), buy telephonecard (ofcourse), the food in there little plastic bags, appering and disappearing the little Soi's, and last but not least looking during the morning all the girlies that arrive at home from there "job", sitting sideways on a MB taxi in there "workingclothes". And from where i look at it all disappear in Nanai 2. JUST LOVE IT

Smile Thanks

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

It sounds like I should wander up that way and check it out. I already have accomodation down near the beach but i was curious as to what was up that way. It might be a good spot to spend an afternoon or two for a change of pace.
