Beer Lao

I was in Bangkok this last weekend and came across Beer Lao. It is a very fine drink, much better than any beer I have tasted in Phuket, and it has a good flavour, and not of chemicals. I had a few bottles and woke up early this morning without a hint of a headache or a hangover.

I understand that in Lao this sells for about 20 baht, so paying 110 baht for it was a bit steep (but other beers in that bar were similarly priced). I wouldn't mind seeing this on sale in Patong, and I reckon it would be a hit.

Oh yes if anyone is in Bangkok, you can drink it in Bully's Bar at the southern end of Sukhumvit, near Soi 2.

I am not planning to be back in Thailand till August or September, but you can never tell when an urge to get away from Hong Kong will strike!

Big Mango in Nana Plaza sells it for 65 baht at happy hour. Tony's Bar in Soi Cowboy is the main distributor, 800 baht a case I believe.

Any bar in Phuket that sells Beer Lao will have me there on a regular basis. If someone wants to become a distributor then put me down for a case.

A great beer!!!

I know one of the guys who is involved in the import and sales of Beer Lao. Have mentioned that I am willing to bring it to Phuket. Do first need to know what the 'competition' is going to do. Until then on hold. bangkok is bigger and there are more players in the market. Patong (Phuket) is very small....

Thumbs up Great beer

Yes - Beer Lao is fantastic beer.

Every time I have been in Vientainne I have had a skinful and woke up the next day with no hang over symptoms.

The Thai breweries should be worried if this comes on market in Thailand because it will win hands down.

Wink One of the "good" things about Asia

One of the really good things about Asia is the beers in the various countries...we absolutely loved Beer Lao when in Laos...it's more like a larger than a beer...beer is a very general term in the end...it's gotta be the lightest beer I think we've ever tasted...extremely good and perfect for the tropics...

In general Mike and I like the Asian beers and we usually make a point of drinking the local beers...when in Rome!!!

The Angkor is very good in Cambodia, Halida is very good in Vietnam...and none of us will ever forget the great Singha...what a gutsy beer!!!

I had quite a collection of beers brought home over the last 4 years but at Christmas when we thought we'd surely be in Phuket by August, we chilled them all and had a pi$$-up...Was good fun but won't be in Phuket by August...spewing Man that bangin' hurts my head!!!

World is changing. I started sailing 1967 and through the 70's beer in those countries was piss, or even worse. Worst was Primus in Congo/Zaire. Now all those countries got European know how and beer engineers and know how to make beer.
By the way, I still prefer the Belgian beers, especialy the strong ones. US start brewing some Belgian style beers now, and they got good critics. Last I saw in newspaper was "Brother Thelonius"... a monks beer.

thats a great point.
on another note, but to back up your point, people wonder if vancouver is too small for me since ive lived in nyc
these days, all major cities have everything you need. good restaurants, bars, theatres. of course, some cities have better, but most have enough

By the way, I got an old schoolfriend living in Thailand. He is in engineering, and more specific in the waste water treatment part, also from breweries. He engineered the beer Lao brewery, next to beer Chang and quite a few others. Both Beer Chang and Lao breweries are constructed by Germans, European parts, local construting companies and German beer engineers.

Finally got to try this beer on my last night in BKK, very nice drop.
Unfortunately i didnt see it much in Patong, i did keep an eye out for it.
Maybe we could compile a list of places around patong that sell it, a bit like Petters' BKK list. Anyone want to start?
