In The Beggining
After reading a post by M&M i thought that this could be quite funny and with some do's and dont's for newbies from our first trips to LOS and mistakes we made... It might have been done before but with a whole load of new members it would be good to get there opinions... My one is on another thread but just to start it off i have copied pasted it here
i suppose mine would be having to get drunk as a skunk wandering around Bangkok not remembering to keep my hotel information with me so i could get a taxi back....i was so drunk i couldnt remember....It was only when i realised i had my mobile phone on me that i remembered the name hahahaa.. It was not a good idea... Anything could have happened..

Classic mistake; first thing I do when I check into an unfamiliar hotel now is grab a couple of their business cards.

Happened to me in Spain years ago. I forgot the hotel name completely and it was 8am in the morning after full night and a party. I had to call my travel agents back in Ireland to get the name of the hotel. The slagging I got when I returned!!!

the thai b/g that i stayed with in pattaya l/t, organised a mini cab back to the airport when my stay ended
un-beknown to me- the driver and her decided to extract 6000bht from me half way through the journey back -- (this was about 10 years ago)
it was pay up or else, and he was a mean looking thai ,so i payed up-
i learnt a lot about los and thai,s from that!
looking back i noticed the same guy hanging around during the time i was with her
reckon he was her b/f or husband

my 2 newbie mistakes ended up working out!!
suits-jeez i must have looked like fresh meat! got picked up by a tuk-tuk outside grand palace, he took me to all the shops, getting gas tickets until i told him to stop, took me to a suit place of his choice, which i know can be bad. i know my suits and these suits i bought fromt here 2 1/2 years ago are gorgeous and a great fit!!
bg/gf-met my now gf 1st trip. i remember asking everynight "why dont we get out of here" with her response being "have to stay until 2am" not understanding the game. after i learned after my next trip i questioned her and we had a laugh about it. i couldnt care less-i was just some lush from america buying tons of drinks at that place!!

Expensive limo ride
About the dumbest thing I did on my first trip was the JW Marriott limo drive to the airport on the way to Phuket. I call up the front desk and ask for a car to the airport. When I check out, a big white Mercedes is waiting. Right before we get to the airport, I ask the driver how much the ride is. He says 1100 baht. I say OK and when we finally stop I give him that much plus a 500 baht tip. The next day when I check over my hotel bill, I see that they had already charged me for the trip - 1100 baht. So, the total cost of my trip to the airport was 2700 baht. Pretty dumb of me, huh?.

Well, I guess they had changed their policy.
I stayed at the Holiday Inn in 1998, and I had no problems at that time with having a girl in my room. She was a go-go girl, a real stunner, and every day in those two weeks we stayed in the garden by the swimming-pool. Her in this tiny little bikini and all the guys was looking in her direction all the time (most of them between fifty and sixty, with an angry wife hanging around).
This was definitely not a mistake, but I just had to tell about it.

Hi Frode,
So then the no guest policy at the Holiday Inn is all your fault.555555 The wives all raised a big stink and told the hotel that they would not come back if beautiful Thai women lounged around the pool all day.
Always love to watch the old farang women when they see me with a beautiful thai or philippine lady. If they give me a really nasty look I usually kiss my lady passionately in front of them. Love to see them squirm.

but after the fight at least you were ready to really go to sleep, which I am sure she loved to see also.

first time in the Philippines on my first night there I took 2 ladies from their disco(what they call the go go bars there).
Forgot to make sure to ask them if they were having their period and ended up with a doubleheader, both of them were. The hotel staff was not happy the next morning needless to say.

First trip/first night in BKK (in the early 80s) me and my mate went to a restaurant which was recommended by the concierge at the hotel we were staying in......Sheraton I think.........
Anyway the menu was only in Thai and we asked the maitre d' what was good and he spoke about as much English as we did Thai........
So we ended up with a bowl of chicken stock in a terrine in the middle of the table and a heap of raw meat and vegetables..........not knowing what the fvk this was we just sat there..and sat there........and sat there...drinking beers and getting pretty sloshed.........
After an eternity several of the waitresses came along and smiled and giggled and put the meat + veg in these little wire baskets and put them in the chicken stock.....voila steamboat!!!.....much embarassment + laughter allround
After this several more dishes came.....and then several more....and then several more.....all washed down with copius amounts of beer and Jack "n Cokes.....arghh...can't look at one of these anymore.....
The restaurant emptied out and the waitresses sat down with us and were feeding us out of the steam boat and were helping themselves to the food and were having drinks with us and generally everyone was having a ball.....on our tab of course but we didn't know at the time........I can't remember what the bill was but later I realised just how much we had been had!!!.......but this is beside the point as we thought we had died and gone to heaven
So after buying all of the staff drinks and partying and turning up the Thai music in the joint and dancing Thai style with all of the girls they decided they wanted to go out......so they took us to Patpong (our first visit ever) and the girls were dragging us from place to place and screaming with laughter at the shows and we were all having a ball................but everything was going on our tab as you can imagine..........once again can't remember what the bill was......too drunk to care
After that we ended up in some disco and were all having a great time dancing and staggering around...........we probably left about 9.00am or something like that (oh for those closing hours again!!) with most of the girls still in tow......I think we ended up with about 5 each in our beds......55555
Later that day the girls asked for a tip????......and we said what the @#$%........we just spent a fortune on you but gave them maybe 200BHT or something which they took with grace and a smile..........god we had no idea that BF's existed or what the price would be or ebven what a BHT was worth at that stage.............55555
The day after that one of the girls came back and took us on a longtail up the river somewhere......both literally and metaphorically..... to one of those dens of eniquity that were popular in those days with all sorts of exotic activities including cockfights with spurs, fish fights, mai thai boxing and opium smoking etc......
Welll we got lost there for a couple of days and eventually found our way back on a longtail..............
Don't know that I'd count all of these experiences above as mistakes.........but I've been in love with LOS ever since.........

What a story.... Loved reading it... Things must have been way different back in those days...
Well i don't have something as interesting but i also have my silly mistake... Wasn't during my first visit to LOS as i have been here many times previously with my parents. However, first time in Koh Samui with my graduating class from high school, we partied, lost track of dates and days, hung over in the morning and i packed my bags thinking it was time to leave. Took my bags downstairs to the lobby and tried to check out. When the front desk lady said sorry sir i cannot check you out... To my amazement... "What do you mean you can't check me out?" We had bought packaged tickets, 6 days and 5 nights. "I'm sorry sir, you're check out date is tomorrow". I felt so stupid and couldn't believe what i was doing... I was trying to leave a day early, but oh well it worked out for the better cause i got to spend another day here in LOS.

I ordered the tom yam, they asked if I Wanted rice and I said no (in Europe you don't eat soup with rice, didn't know it was done in Thailand). They asked "spicy or no spicy", thinking how I put pili-pili in my food in Africa I ordered "Very spicy".

Local Steak
In Lanta during the chicken meat panic a couple of years
ago I decided to have a steak for a change. I don't know, I
just couldn't identify the smell of that strange looking
piece of meat on my plate....it smelled like s*&t.
Out of respect (the very friendly waiter was around my table
watching me and smiling all the time) I took 1 bite of it, but
spit it out unnoticed and covered the whole thing under napkins
and left the restaurant...back to my room, where I spend the
rest of the night till early morning hours on the toilet puking my
guts out.
Till today I still wonder, WTF is a "local steak" anyway ?
Greetings

If it's ok for you, I'd like to see some pictures of things you found strange/funny first time to LOS. Here is one from me. You would never see this in Norway.
The 2. from right is real sweety by the way.

...I would rather choose the first on the left, please, and that's not only because of those smashing hot pants...
Great picture !
