Santa Monica City College here in CA does a huge business in foreign students. I think about 50% of their enrollment is foreigners.

Here's hoping this thread doesn't get closed before I can post this...
There was a lot of fuss last week about bogus language schools in London signing off on people as students for visa purposes.
Student visas are easier to come by than other types because they are backed up by accredited instituions, but then of course you get institutions being accredited with no checking, so expect a media-driven crackdown here in the UK.

some specialise in English but it is a community(Junior) college so they take all kinds of classes.
And most of them do have money but a lot of the ladies somehow get a work pernit and end up in strip clubs in LA to finance their education.

ED visas are often given to rich asian kids.. I have no experience but I can see if it was institution sponsered (college) that it might be a foot in the door..

I can´t say about UK or US but a friend of mine (Thai living in germany) got a one year visa for his now wife. He told me that you have to make a contract with a language school and send it with your visa application to your embassy. In that case it was for germany. No problems to get it. The costs for the school have been around 500 euro / month but got more than half sponsered by german goverment ( no joke). so his part was about 200 euro per month. I will prove if it is still like that as it could have changed already ( it was 3 years ago) and than give it a go.
Modification:
Just made a quick research about this. It looks like it is that easy. The costs for the school are lower, but you have to show that she has enough money for her spendings. This can be made by a safety deposit to a bank of about 7000 € or with a garanty of someone else ( same as in the tourist Visa). i will have a closer look at this at all. Sorry this is only for germany. But i think it could be the same in other europaen countries. Just to add, the Visa will not be a Schengen Visa, its restricted to Germany. Also you have to registrate the hours of school lessons she got. This must be at least 20 hours per week.

A friend of mine got a 1 year visa for Thailand to do a TEFL course. He never went near the place. He used the money he had paid the school for his wife to learn Thai.

To obtain a student visa for the UK. to study, EFL. the candidate has to show only a basic level of English skills. They have to show proof of being enrolled on a course at a recognised college. Show proof of being able to support themselves etc. If they want to study on more advanced courses they have to pass an IELTS test to show they have sufficient English language skills to enable them to succesfully complete the course.

Why did his wife want to learn Thai? If she was Thai, wouldn't she know it already?

English VIsa for Canada
Hey Paulie,
If you want to get the girl over to Canada for English school you can try to go through a company called GEOS> They have offices in Vancouver, Victoria and about half a dozen other Canadian cities.
When I was in Japan I knew many girls that went over to Canada to study English at these schools. No problem at all for obtaining a Visa. GEOS usually takes care of it for them.
You can contact them in Vancouver and ask them if they can help you.
The price is not too bad also.
Cheers,
Ashley
