Conmen

I was just reading stickman weekly page and the story about a Farang riding around Bangkok on a motorbike taxi and stopping 'First Time Lone Travellers' and then flashing a fake Thai Police ID Card, no doubt in order to trick them out of some money.

I got asked to lend an American guy some money a couple of weeks ago on the beachroad in Phuket in the afternoon.

I have seen him a couple of times before, he's American mid 40's deep tan well dressed with a beard.

He stops by people who are drinking and just stands there for about 2 miuntes, holding a large leather document/money wallet.

Then he says 'hey buddy could you lend me some money'', yeh like you are going to give it me back right? mmmmm

He's not exactly a con man, but I wonder if he makes enough to live on.

Those Thai guys outside the Holiday Inn with their little tins with red and blue plastic stones are the best. They show you them as if they are real (pretending to have stolen them and its all very 'top secret' ) and offer you a special deal- not the sharpest tools in the box, those boys, still I bet they get some sucker every now and again.

Has anyone else been conned whilst on their travels in LOS.

Regards

Drew

I almost fell for that in Bangkok (not checking of the meter was on)... Wanted a taxi from Patpong to Nana plaza and the guy said ok... Just before he moved i said put your meter on.... He said no no i charge you 100 baht each (i was with a mate) and i said hahahaha i dont think think so i will give you only 100 baht and that is being nice at best... He goes after midnight 100 baht each... Got out and went into another taxi... The ride was under 100 baht but gave him 100 still because i was a little worse for wear...

I suppose taxies are not really a con in the way the thread was intended, but they are annoying... 300THB from Soi Cowboy to Nana anytime after 10

The other common thing I learned to avoid after falling for it first tour is the Sukhumvit Survey - the drones in the polo shirts pretending to take tourist surveys but quickly leading into the condo sales pitch.

As for being conned by Farangs... I wouldn't say I avoid Farangs, but I don't seek out their company (plenty of that back home) and have never had one try it on with me (except that bar-owner who told me Black Deaths were non-alcoholic... ).

Exactly the same happenned to us at Patpong...we wanted to go to Siam Square...the three of us piled in a taxi and I was in the front and I remember not being too happy at the time something had pi$$ed me off...I said "meter on"...taxi driver says "200 baht"...I say..."NO meter on"...driver says..."NO 200 baht...Piled straight out of the cab giving the driver plenty of lip and hailed another one...same as you flung him 100 baht even though it was only 70!!

They're a real con if you ask me these cabbies...Always have to ask if it is "meter taxi" before you get in these days!!

My mate got conned in BKK by a taxi driver. He was staying at the Prince Hotel and wanted to go to this big massage/knocking shop...can't remember the name. Taxi took him on a 20 minute ride to get to it and charged him I think 200 baht.

When he came out after doing his business he asked another taxi to take him back to the Prince and the driver laughed and pointed at the building next door...it was....the Prince

You mean besides BGs doing a runner!

Once I was in Surat Thani, at a bus station, killing time before going to the train station. I had already paid for a voucher for my train ticket, first class to BKK. A Thai lady(1/2 farang according to her, but didn't look it) struck up a conversation with me, as we watched DVDs on TV there. We got on quite well, and she said she was taking the bus to BKK. We talked about possibly hooking up in BKK, and she would show me around. I suggested she might like to take the train, not so much more than the bus, I said, and you can sleep in a bed on the way. It's not as if she couldn't afford it. She spoke 7 languages and worked as a translator for a big bank in Switzerland for many years, after she divorced the Swiss man who took her there, and paid for her education, because he got fat. She was quite fit, nice-looking and in her late 30's, I would guess, altho she said she was 32. "You think I should take the train?" she asked. I said, "Sure, why not?" She said, "OK, then, I will change my ticket!"

She went up front to where they sold the vouchers and a little later she returned with a man who worked there. They chatted in Thai. He said to me, "You go BKK with lady?" with a nudge and a couple of very obvious winks, not hiding it from the lady. She smiled, as if to confirm his insinuations, and I just played along. What the hell, I thought, if she's up for it, then why not, indeed! It's not as if I had anything better to do that evening.

The taxi came and as I was throwing bags in the trunk, he gave her an envelope with our tickets in it. At the train station, when we went to board, I got my ticket from her, found the car, and we got in. It was only then that I realized my ticket was for 2nd class. It seems that she had traded in my first class ticket for two second class tickets. Probably pocketed a few baht on the deal as well. I was well pissed-off at her, and wouldn't have anything to do with her that night. In the morning, since we were sitting together, I chatted with her, since there was no undoing what had been done, so I tried to make the best of it.

At the BKK station, she wanted to get a taxi together, and I said no. Again she offered to show me the town, and asked when she would see me again. I smiled, said, "Never, I hope!" and jumped in the taxi.

Hi Marc, just because you mentioned Casino's, do you mind I join your off-LOS-topic post...

I had a similar experience in Vegas earlier this year. I stayed in the Venetian and started my tour through a couple of clubs. I ended up in Treasure Island and after closing time, I joined a hugh taxi queueu. When I finally got the cab and ask if he could bring my Hotel, I received the grumpiest look I ever got, but he took off without a comment....for a 1 minute ride just across the street ! I must have lost track of where I was I asked him why he didn't tell me it's just across the street and he just said: "We're not allowed to refuse customers"

How nice and service minded are the US cab drivers, at least that one ? All I could do was giving a good tip

Greetings

Austrian ConMan Pretending to Be Doctor

look at this cheeky rascal.

http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/12Jul2006_news16.php

Why would you really want to spend money on some quack who claims he can cure Aids and Cancer when the medical world can't conquer it.

People like this prey on fears and insecurities of desperate people.

They are no different from those con men builders who visit old peole and tell them that their house is about to collapse unless they give them thousands to fix a a non-existent problem.

Anyone else come across any other cons

Regards

Drew

There are guys who hang around the Grand Palace who advertise boat road tours around the canals in BKK. They ask for 500 baht for a trip that costs the locals 50 baht. There is a huge sign at the ferry station telling people not to buy these tickets. The tour takes you around some canals. You see some slums and children swimming in the water. Later on an old Lady approaches you in a boat and try's to sell you a beer. At that point your guide announces
Flouting market. Which is bullshit since when did one person in a boat selling beer become a flouting market.

He finally docks you near Wat Po. The guy who helps you get out of the boat asks for a 75 baht landing fee and then tells you Wat Po is closed for renovations and suggests you take a massage at Cupidity for 3000 baht.

Have any of you notised this deaf girl on Patong beach who is selling nice small things for 50 Baht. She goes to all tourists and put these things on their sunbed and give them a paper where it says that she is deaf and if they buy this from her they support a school for deaf people in Patong.

I have seen her at the beach for the last years, and I think she is english or australien. Maybe she is deaf, but if she is not I would say that this is a very smart way to make a living. These small things cost about 5 or 10 Bath in the shop and I think she is selling many every day. My mother bought 3 of her.

Do any of you know if she is deaf or not?

Yeah that must be it...I remember the name of the massage place now too...Cupidity....and my mate said after the incident everytime he walked out the Prince all the taxi drivers there would point at him and laugh

I got conned too in BKK a few years ago. Was at the racetrack...seemed like I was about the only farang there amongst 1000s of Thais. The guy sat next to me spoke a little English and for the first few races he was trying to give me some tips but unsurprisingly they weren't doing any good. I was picking my own out anyway as I never listen to anyone else.

Then I had a winner...the guy leaned over and grabbed my ticket to look at it and said "you hab winner, I hab winner too" gave me back my ticket and said "I go get my money" and shot off. I went to the payout window to collect mine and the lady said "You no win, wrong number you ticket" and when I looked at the ticket I realised that the fcuker had switched his losing ticket for my winning one

When we arrived in Kl this week on a visa run as we left the airport a guy approached me and asked if I wanted a taxi, I asked how much to Kl he replied 90 ringett and it was just the way he said it that I decided to decline and went back in to the terminal to find out that taxi should cost 55 to 60. As we were getting out the cab the driver gave me his card and said to telephone him when we wanted to go back and he would take me back at an even lower price as I was a regular customer. The final day just before we were to go he telephoned me to say he was caught up but his uncle would give us a lift. Halfway to the airport his uncle turns to me and said had Frankie given me a price, I replied yes 55 ringett, he goes cannot be so I showed him my receipt from the original journey and told him to ring Frankie to confirm. After speaking malay to Frankie the guy then handed me the phone, where Frankie said he had agreed 55 but this was his Uncle's cab and his uncle charged more, no apology just this explanation as far as he was concerned explained everything and was perfectly okay. As it was a metered taxi I told the uncle we would use the meter to which he replied 'ah but to the meter you must add the toll fee and also my extra profit' what extra profit? 'well I am a city taxi and not an airport taxi so I have to add extra profit to journeys to the airport which is outside th
