Hum , from what iveī "heard" a good Buddist should be and live as a monk atleast one time in there life .. it means you can come from any background , "play monk" for a few years and then go back to what every you did before .. but as i use to say .. itīs all about cheating your self .. if i cheat my self to belive living in an igloo at the north pool is great , itīs great .. working 25 hours a day , itīs great .. married to a falang woman , itīs great .. but it all ends up in one .. Up to You!

Hell i start to sound like HJ .. been reading to many of his postīs at ISG lately .. sorry !

I kind of agree in that automatic respect for someone doesnt sit well with me..

In Thailand monks are considered such high status they are nearly never prosecuted etc.. So someone who is in trouble with the law.. A street puink.. A yaba seller.. etc etc etc can make to the tmeple quick sharp and ordain to lie low and not be chased.. This is relatively common for young guys who may not be very good for the society suddenly to use this and then live off the community.

Also tales of junior monks having fights (with knuckle dusters and weapons.. Whats a monk doing with a knuckle duster), drinking, etc etc are fairly rife but no one will acknowledge that and its rude to mention or discuss it.

I am fairly anti organised religion but do find Buddhism interesting in its philosophy and ease of use.. However Buddhism as practiced here is a very odd mish mash of loits of things.. Animism and spirit houses are not Buddhist.. Blessing your new pick up or washing machine is not Buddhist.. incorporating Hindu Gods and dieties is not Buddhist.. Belief in Ghosts and the like is not Buddhist.. Basically Buddhism as practiced in Thailand is like a fairly superstitious and IMHO primative form of Buddhism when compared to the meditative aspects and styles of say Tibetan Buddhists.

You guys are right, I spoke to my tirak a few weeks ago about this sort of thing and her explanation was similar to LL, anyone can become a monk. Her definition was there was a few good and proper monks, a lot of not so good monks, these guys were just being monks because it entailed very little work and gifts and money from locals and then there was the very bad monkds, that did all the above but also fought locals, raped etc all in their nice orange jim jams.

I also do not think any person in any position should demand immediate respect, but respect must always be earned.
