What's with the bottle of Fanta, Presented to Ghanesh?
You'd think Ghanesh would be more into Green Tea. I always see Bargirls giving an offering of Read Fanta to Ghenish the Hindu Elephant God.

Ganesh is well known for his pot belly and his love of sweet food. Fanta or even better coconut is more appropriate than green tea.

Maybe it's to do with the swastika thing. As a symbol of luck used in Buddhist (and other) architecture, the swastika was also adapted for use by the Nazis. Now - stay with me here - during the war, when the German division of the Coca-Cola company could no-longer import the secret recipe syrup for Coca Cola, the Nazis had to come up with a replacement soft drink; and Fanta was born. So: Fanta - Nazi Cola - Swastika - Buddha.
See? Everything in life has a logical explanation

It is the colour...... red! Nothing to do with being Fanta, Coke etc...
And the offering is mostly made to either Buddha or Rama V, not always to Ganesh.

Mainly the shrines you see are not for Buddha, Rama V, or Ganesh, but are for the Phra Poom. There are some Brahmin(Hindu) shrines, but they are not as common as the spirit houses.
The shrines you see in people's yards, in businesses, and in front of buildings are spirit houses. Thais believe that there are spirits(Phra Poom) that live on the land, and they are considered guardians of the land. When you come and use their land for your home or for a building, you must build a spirit house for the spirit of the land there to live in, so he won't get pissed off at you, and give you bad luck. The flowers and the Fanta is to appease the spirit who lives in the spirit house. If you treat the spirits well, they may also bring you good luck!
These practices go back to the animistic beliefs of pre-Buddhist Thailand. Actually, the Hindus got to LOS before the Buddhists, and they sanctioned the practice of building spirit houses for the Phra Poom. When the Buddhists came later, they did not try to change the existing tradition of the spirit houses. Even today, when a new building goes up, a spirit house is usually built, and a Brahmin priest, not a Buddhist monk, is brought for the ceremony of getting the spirit of the land to come live in his new house. When you see the girls wai to the spirit houses, they are honoring the Phra Poom spirits, not Buddha, as I had first thought.
Incidentally, I have seen the pictures of Rama V at the shrines, and don't understand exactly how he ties into the whole picture, but they probably feel that it is a good idea to honor his spirit also. Maybe he is a big landholder in the spirit world!
Thais are big believers in ghosts/spirits. One of the reasons they pray to Buddha and honor the monks is because they believe that Buddha can protect them from ghosts, and the monks can help them obtain Buddha's protection. If you ever watch Thai comedies, it is a standard scene where someone gets scared by a ghost or someone pretending to be a ghost, and runs and grabs his Buddha statue and hugs it for protection. So Buddha and spirit houses are serving the same purpose for them: avoiding the wrath of the spirits. Therefore there is no conflict between animistic belief in spirits and Buddhism.
In LOS, it's all about the ghosts!
You can read about spirit houses here: http://www.angkor.com/cityrain/Ron/f...%20Spirits.htm

2 different things. 1 are the spirit houses place in front of properties to house the spirits of the house. (ban phii). 2 are the small 'altars' inside houses. Here you find mostly the buddha statues and images of Rama V.
Both are receiving offerings in the form of food, drinks and flowers among other things.

That makes sense. I think that Baan phii(house ghosts) and Phra Poom are the same thing.
Spirit house trivia - there's a spirit house outside the UN Headquarters in NYC, a gift from the Kingdom of Thailand.

Yep.
My gf usually only gives Red coloured fanta for bhudda as she says it makes her bhudda far happier than green fanta or whatever.
Strangely I did notice that it did seem to evaporate quicker than another time when she put coke up there. So bhudda was drinking this more quickly ? Stange but true.
We often give Jack Daniels or Black Label for the King also.

I suppose you could, it's all about giving offerings to bhudda and the king. Which is why they also give food, bananas etc..
The reason I always give JD or BL is out of respect, I am offering a good quailty drink to them and not cheap charlie drinks like Sangsom.

What would Buddha have done without you, Mr. Keith! Thank Buddha for the Yellaman!!
