Unhappy Damn LOS Flight

Well My flight is only 3 months away and it is Trauma to me.
Im so scared of planes....but I will get on them.I think its a common fear , So my Question to you Guys is What do I do for 15 hours?

I have an Ipod Video(Only good for 2 hours Video play back)
Laptop(4 hours)

Maybe I should read a Book but I need something to Entertain my Mind so I wont concentrate on my Fear

Maybe I need to be Sedated

So what did you Guys do to Kill the Time

Sedation works well! I find a few gin and tonics at the airport followed by a couple of glasses of red wine with the thing they call a meal, washed down afterwards by a brandy helps me sleep for ages.

Talking What to do .. ?

Enjoy the flight .. itīs much more dangerous to drive a car these days .. look at the clowdīs , the start and the landing are the best parts i belive but there are even things in between that draws my attention .. like the little BAR wagon

Having a zip of whiskey while looking at the beer can and wonder when the little sweet Thai Flight Attendant with the bar wagon will be back , itīs a taste of what im going to experiance in LOS for the next coming 3-4-5-6 monthīs :

Good Luck!

too right Frode take the travelling pills. ever notice that there always seems to be a chemist near thai bus stations.

when the locals are on the long haul bus trips its into the chemist for some sleeping pills, learnt that trick from a bg, pop some pills and sleep away the hours. pop the pill in bkk and wake fully in nakon nowhere.

take pills by all means TRD.....heck I do....but also get a plane which has inflight entertainment systems on board......y'know the one in the seat back in ront of you which has about 100 entertainment program options.....flick through a couple of crap films and you'll soon be off to sleep......makes getting there much quicker.....Singapore for example have these on all long haul flights now to my knowledge......

One better than pure sedative would be a sedative and anti anxiety medication..

My father has a true freak out fear of aeroplanes (and has been in 2 emergency landings.. Masks out of the overhead etc !!!).. He can manage to conquer it if he has a xanex or two... Just about anyway..

I dont worry about short haul but these days I dont drink (hard) on flights (have suffered to many hangovers while needing to connect / continue travelling, or felt like shit on my first night) but take a sedative prior to boarding, instruct on no meals, get a window seat so no one climbs over me and put on some silly eye goggles.. I can usually deep sleep 6 - 8 hours of a long haul flight that way and doze for the rest. Depending on your metabolism and tolerance for functioning on downers your only slight drawback is being a bit fuzzy on arrival. Plus side is you often confuse your body out of real jetlag also.

I stay awake for 24hrs before I board a flight and can usually sleep a good 8 - 10 hrs intransit. Works best if you're going nonstop or if the first leg is the longest. I take China Air from the West Coast (U.S.) and my one stop is Taipei. Most China Air planes have the inflight entertainment video screens that can keep you occupied for the remainder of the journey.

When you have a flight that is 21 hours or more, then it is not so easy to sleep that long, and for some of us with long legs, it can be very difficult to sleep at all.

But here is the way I do it. For starters, either pickup the SF Chronicle or a paperback at the airport before you board. If you are extremely lucky, you will get a pretty gal sitting next to you who likes to talk. On my maiden voyage to LOS, that happened to me, and she was really a lifesaver. Even wanted me to go and see her in Penang, which is where she was headed.

However, that was beginner's luck. If you are a little bit lucky, then you get a guy sitting next to you who is not a complete jerk and has someting interesting to say. The last trip, there were two guys from Redwood Cityy on the other side of the aisle(get an aisle seat), who were like the reincarnation of Moe and Curly, cracking jokes constantly as they knocked back those tiny whiskey bottles at a pretty good clip. One guy would even sometimes slap the other guy across the face ala 3 Stooges. They had rented a yacht in Pattaya for a month and wanted me to join their party. If it weren't that a buddy of mine was in BKK, waiting to hookup, I probably would have gone there.

If you get some Chinese guy, who doesn't speak English much, next to you, that 's sort of par for the course. Then it is time to read the newspaper. First the Sports pages, then the Front page, then if you haven't got dinner served by then, either the business page or skip that and go straight to the comics and the crossword puzzle. If the guy next to you is a real jerk, then start asking him if he knows a four-letter word for obnoxious, and so forth.

Here is an important tip!! In order to go to the head of the line at dinner time, when you buy your ticket, check the box for gluten-free meal. all this means is that they won't serve you a meal with noodles. This saves you from some pretty awful lasagna, pork w/ noodles, macaroni and cheese, and other horrible stuff. Plus they will serve your meal first, ahead of everyone else on the plane!! I can't tell you how many times I have been eating thick Omaha steaks, while the chump next to me had some awful looking chicken noodle dish. Noodles are never a good thing on planes. They should be banned. But you don't need to eat them. Go gluten-free and get potatoes or rice instead.

Also, never drink the wine on planes. It is not the kind that the label on the bottle says. They use the same bottle many times, and fill it from a jug of the cheapest stuff. After eating, have a drink if you like, relax and watch a movie. Watch two of them if you have your own screen on the back of the seat in front of you, and can choose which ones to watch. While watching the movie(s), pop a 10mg valium (or 2) near the end of the first one or in the middle of the second one. Then it is lights out and you sleep until breakfast time. You get served first again, naturally! It is then about 3 hours from China. Watch another movie. Finish reading the paper or doihg the crossword, and bingo, you're in China.

Get some real food during the layover. There are lots of restaurants there. Get a nice expresso or latte to shake off the effects of the valium. Soon you will be on the plane for the 3 hr(BKK) or 4 hr(Phuket) flight to LOS. That flight is a breeze since you are well-rested, caffeined up, and starting to feel the adrenaline flow with the excitement of anticipating the fact that you will soon be eating Pad Thai, knocking back Singhas, gazing at nearly naked gogo girls, giving you their big come-on smiles as they wiggle their hips and shake their booties at you , and, when you are done with the difficult work of choosing one, then you will be on your way to hours of naked paradise back at the "loom."

Just follow this advice, and the journey will be a snap!!

Maybe forget about the valium, take 6 or 7 viagras, take a sweet little Thai Flight Attendant into the toilet, and shag all the way to thailand. Not only will the time go quickly, but you will become a member of the mile high club.

While knocking one self out on long flights is very common these days, something that folks dont think about is, that heaven forbid something goes wrong, you will be left behind if you cant be readily aroused (no pun intended)

Valium are tranquilizers. They tranqilize you(reduce your anxiety). They don't always put me to sleep, either. At least not for a solid number of hours straight through. But they usually relax me enough that I can frequently doze off. Especially if i am watching a boring movie or try to read a book!

Therefore, the espresso on the layover in China or Japan! Being groggy for a little while afterwards is a small price to pay for helping get through the 14 hour flight to China/japan/Korea. The sight of gogo girl jiggling their goodies for you will wake you up for sure, once you get into LOS!

Good books. Private Dancer is a bit outlandish, but a quick read, nonetheless, and really does evoke the feeling of the gogo bars/BGs in BKK. He squeezes every horror story you ever heard about BGs conning farang BFs in to one short novel.

the little things

I assume you've booked your flight but if not check out seatguru or seatexpert. there can be a big difference in seat width and legroom between carriers ( especially if you fly asian airlines). If you already booked check the same sites to get one of the better seats. Also try exit row when you get to the gate. Comfort goes a long way on these journeys to LOS.

The IFE goes a long way also, you can choose from so many different things. I like the foreign language movies and the documeteries. Most 777's have good ife. Love my mp3, about 5000 songs and 40 hour battery life...

oh yeah, gin and tonic, gin and tonic, keep repeating also lot's of water.

good luck and have a great trip.

jim

I hate flying to so what do i do..... i usually have a good book and there is usually inflight entertainment aswell.... You will get by but sometimes the flights can really drag.....I prefer a window seat..... sometimes its nice to look out and start thinking what you want to do when you get there..... I have a guide book for Thailand.... i brought it for information on Bangkok (tourist stuff) and something i can read on the plane aswell.... passes the time away.....

Yeah point 1 is that while a sed will help me stay under theres no way I wouldnt wake up during any movement etc.. Turbulance brings me out of one or two and secondly.. If it really is going to hell theres not usually much difference..

LiL, a certain someone who started this thread has a plane trauma, don't think we're helping going that direction

...and please be aware that the nearest exit could be behind you...
