It depends what you are looking for and what is your budget.
For a short stay (it seems that you stay only 1 week), I would rather go to Koh Samet...
Regards,
Bobby

If you stay in Phuket, be prapared to spend an average of 5000 B (125 $) per day (hotel, drinks, food, girls). Everything is expensive there. I like Phuket very much but you must have a minimum experience to avoid tourist (or newbie) traps.

My average cost for 1 day in Koh Samet is 1500 B (35 $). Drinks and food (seafood) are very very cheap.
Nightlife is not very important in Koh Samet. Only 1 bar where almost evveryone goes. There is no prostitution there but there are often thai or wstern girls available for free (although it doesn't seem to be clear for everyone).
The only drawback of Samet is that there is absolutely nothing to do there. It can be very reaxing but also quickly boring if you plan to stay more than 1 week.
Regards,
Bobby

One week is very short especially if you are the first time in LOS. I don't
know what are your interest's? I would advise you to go to Phuket. Make a trip around the Island. You can make a jungle trek Undertake a boat trip to one of the other Islands. Go to Pang Nga (James Bond Island) and Phi Phi Island.
In the night go in one of the thousand bars or to the show in the
"Fantasea". If you go with a TG to the "Fantasea" take a little bit more
money with you, because the TG will play and buy and play ....and pictures from herself before the show begins!!!! In the show it isn't allowed to make pictures.

Ko Samet is national park and more for relaxing. There are not so much
people. For sightseeing I find not the best starting point.

Here are some older pictures from my trip to Ko Samet and the Fantasea.
