Actually, a native may be able to say EXACTLY where the malaria regions are. Can't remember if anyone from the Phuket Hash did the Chiang Rai Inaugural run but we must have been running in the jungle very close to the border there and still no mention of malaria.

How common is it to get the shits? Is it usually food poisoning type shits (ie very unpleasant and long lasting), or general too much sauce/hot curry shits? I'm a magnet for anything that makes a chap pebble-dash the bog.

What do doctors give you for them anyway, apart from a cork of course...

What about drinking water - I take it it's bottled water only?

The most common type of shits is the "too much sauce/hot curry/chili and too much seafood" shits!!! But even this can get pretty uncomfortable...I know that Immodium (available over the counter in LOS) is very good for this common type of shits.

However the really bad shits a "food poisoning" type of shits...well this is a different matter...I usually travel with Lomotil (Diphenoxylate hydrochloride and Atropine sulfate), obtainable by script in Australia, probably available over the counter in LOS. This medication will help with the pain and ultimtely control the diarrhoea. Lomotil can also be taken for the more common "curry shits" above. Will help you get over it much quicker and with much less pain!!

Maxolon (Metoclopramide Hydrochloride Anhydrous) can be taken for associated nausea and vommiting Also available on script in Australia and probably over the counter in LOS.

You take it right regarding drinking water...Bottled water always...never ever drink the tap water. And also be careful with street carts with ice as they tend to smash the ice on the sidewalk with a hammer!!

I have never got any vaccinations for my many trips to LOS but i also have Hep A+B,form when i was working in Africa and it´s valid for 20 years.But if you decide to go trekking in the jungle in North Thailand then you have to be aware of malaria consult your doctor.

Is it expected that farangs will get ill a LOT from the food/whatever? I'm not a big fan of puking me guts up. I'm a complete nonce in fact.

No its not an expecting occurance really. As in every destination,you can get dodgy guts following the change in diet ,but no more so in LOS. Its not only the change in food either,more drink every night,the hot sun can all give you the trots.
I would be more concerned about eating undercooked food anywhere than eating the lovely Thai dishes. Relax,if you get the sh1ts,you now have the answers.

I consulted my doctor and he said it would be a good idea to get hep b, Thyphoid, Tetnus/diptheria combined jab and a polio drop.... I said is it really worth it and he said well its better to have it than not although i cant see it being any problems... I asked how much thinking it was gonna be a lot and he said FREE.... As it was all free i took it.... My mate went and didnt have any..... No problems....

Think you were ripped off Mike, my doctors surgery got the combination of hep A & B in for me and the cost was $45 per shot, I can also claim it on my heath fund, also doing the had 1st shot last week Friday, 2nd shot Thursday and have another 2 weeks after 2nd shot.

I have filled out a Masta form at a cost of $11 at my surgery, they then fax it on to some Government or Medicinal institute and they then fax back what you should be having for the area you are going to, I was advised to get Typhoid as well which I have done, which you can also claim back from your health fund.

did my research beforehand and it was the cheapest I could find in a 20km radius. maybe it's a state thing as my mum paid $70 and she is in nsw as well.
doesn't matter too mucH as I found out yesterday my health fund will cover it :-)

In Thailand would it be possible to get a doctor/nurse to perform injections for me periodically? Where would I go for a place like this, local clinics? I am not talking about vaccinations here, I just need the act of injection done.
