The laguna group of hotels are usually good, it's located at Bang Tao beach and the beach is very clean and nice.

I think this is an idyllic place for your family, however, you may want to visit Patong or Karon/Kata beach for a lot wider range of restaurants/shopping opportunities.

Well I had a stopover in KL

Well I flew with malaysian airlines in 94 to phuket via Kuala lumpur and I had a stopover there. I didnt request one, I just got it.

I got my ticket in a kind of rush no prebooking of hotels for the stopover etc. I got in late at night local time in KL so there was no connecting flight to phuket. But malaysian took care of the hotel at least (3 star)and I took care of the rest. I changed the outgoing flight to phuket to a later one so I got some minimal sightseeing. It was not too bad.

One the way back it was just a couple hours on the airport.

Some other flights I have had to thailand:

The most free alcohol during enroute flight to thailand was with lauda air(it helps to sit just outside the galley and just move the curtain and say "can i have another double whisky). The cheapest aeroflot(2 stop tajskent and somewhere in india) and the most boring was with lufthansa ZzZzz. The most stressful Allitalia. The most memorable was with Thai airways.

Do I detect there is a story here? Come on, Pancake, what made this flight so memorable - tell us more, please.
