new mobile prefix 8 - countdown...
starting from 1.9.2006 you have to add the '8' to thai mobile phone numbers, e.g.
0066 1 1234567 will be 0066 81 1234567
other examples (in Thailand)
old: 01-1234567
new: 081-1234567
09-1234567 -> 089-1234567
maybe for international calls, the old number will still work for some time...

Thailand will use 10-digit mobile telephone system on September 1
Thailand will change from 9-digit to 10-digit mobile telephone system on September 1.
Setthaporn Khusripithak (เศรษฐพร คูศรีพิทักษ์), a member of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said the change, approved by the telecom regulator yesterday, was in response to the rapid expansion of the use of mobile telephones.
With the 10-digit system, the country will have enough mobile telephone numbers for the next 30 years, Mr. Setthaporn said.
Beginning September 1, users of all mobile telephone systems will have to dial the prefix 08, he said. For examples, the number 01-123-4567 will be changed to 08-112-345-67 and the new number of 09-123-4567 will be 08-912-345-67.

I have found that adding the "8" has had mixed success so far.
SEP 1st : dialled without the "8" - didn't connect. Redialled with the "8" - did connect.
SEP 2nd : dialled with the "8" - didn't connect. Redialled without the "8" - did connect.
This is Thailand !!

I had to call someone yesterday manually and I added 8 to his number and it worked. Think it will be both numbers for 3 months and then only the new numbers.
But I will start changing slowly...

It is my understanding, that the new 10 digit number system (prefix with 8), became effective on Sept 1.
All "Thai" cell phones, must have their sim cards "updated", with the new prefix, in order for the "caller", to use the prefix.
There is a "grace period" of 3 months (I believe), in which to have the modification to the sim card completed. (Sept-end of Nov)
Until the individual sim card has been "modified"...the OLD number will still work. At least, until November.
I think, I also read, where all sim cards purchased within the last 6 to 9 months...already have the capability of the #8 prefix, loaded.

SEP 4th - I just phoned my GF with the "8" prefixed to her old number and got some Thai fella who didn't speak a word of English. I redialled omitting the new "8" prefix and got through straight away !!

Thats bad, I have to say. So better wait a while until changing the numbers in the phonebook then.

I think the shops only run a program to convert the numbers in your phonebook, that software is also available for download at AIS website.
But I will probably drop by anyway in a month or so to ask about the upgrade.

A friend of me bought in April for Bth 2,000 cards to validate his Thai number up till January 2007, when he returns. Would the change mean he looses this balance or simply has to go for an Update and keep his balance?

I think no problem, the card should still be valid. As I understand so far, the number itself is not in the card, just a reference, so the phone companies can add another number without having to change or upgrade the card itself. But I am not sure about it.
But we all know in few months.

But I am still waiting to update my mobile phone number as the CLID (caller ID) is not showing 08 numbers.. So I lose all the name info of who is calling me..
There seems to be masses of confusion as badly worded thai information is saying you need to get your sim upgraded where in reality they are just running programs on your phone to add a 08 number to mobiles in your book.

This is the strange thing, I changed the phonebook entry for Ead to the new number, but her entry shows up when she calls me regardless of using her old or new number in phonebook. This confuses me. Try for yourself. If that the case, you can safely change all numbers now.

Had something like that last week. When i called my GF she was a bit strange and told me to call her again NOW. Well i thought she has a bad signal , so i did. She was a bitt pissed of then and asked me where i stay. She didnt believed me that i am at home as she saw a Thai prefix on her mobile and thought i am for some mongering anywhere in thailand. took me a while to convince her that i would NEVER do that.
Has this something to do with the new prefixes? I use VOIPDISCOUNT to call to thailand as it is for free to landline as well as mobile phones
