griffo69 you have chosen the most expensive place in Thailand to want to live...it is almost impossible to get a job that will pay anything let alone get a work permit...
I suggest you do a lot of reading in this forum and do lot of searches...

Ah, we work hard to get wealth, then we spend wealth to get health.
I can just see him gathering enought money for 1 year, then blowing it all in 3 months. Thats how i would end up spending it , in my opinion you can control your spendings in your homeland, but not in Thailand. And how easy would it be to part with the savings New ideas would spring to mind, study fees, new car, etc. or just a simple idea of not wanting to start uni pennyless

Well buddy i'm 23 and doing it, but then again i've already finished University as well. The law states that you must either have a degree or have a minimum of 5 years work experience. Plus in thailand there are certain jobs that a foreigner is not allowed to do. (see Restricted jobs list on this forum) You being only 20 i doubt you have 5 years work experience in something that would qualify you to work here. Thailand also doesn't offer a working holiday visa like they do in the Uk or australia to commonwealth nationals. So i don't mean to burst your bubble but it is not very easy.... As you're planning to go back to Uni and just want to experience a different culture before you start uni, why don't you do what marc26 suggested...??? Work your **** off, save up and travel around asia instead of just stayin in thailand. Pick a base country like thailand, malaysia, singapore and then use budget airlines to go see the rest of asia. You will be able to see many places in 6 - 12 months. If you avoid places like Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea and Japan you could really stretch your dollar as well.
I suggest you save up, take the time to PLAN your trip ie, places you want to see and visit, put an itinerary together, don't worry about dates too much if you're gonna give yourself 6 - 12months and just bum around from place to place. I did that in Europe when i finished uni. Oh good way to save of accommodation, look at CouchSurfing - Participate in Creating a Better World, One Couch At A Time Hope everything works out for ya. Happy travels.
