You can take a taxi ride (45 minutes) or shuttle or the train(very fast) to Kuala Lumpur or KLCC where you can take another taxi to Bukit Bintang Area. This is the place to be..it is also near to The Petronas Twin Towers. For your info..Malaysia is right now having Malaysia Sales Carnival until 23 Jan 2004..no tax or sales tax...all electronic, cameras, perfume etc..very much cheaper than that found in Phuket...ask Nicke. Your wife is going to enjoy this side trip.

Markh,
Everything Malaysian said is correct but I forsee one problem, your timing. If I read your post correctly you'll be in KL from 12 midnight to 12 noon. Most shops will be closed upon your arrival (shops close at approx 10pm). They usually reopen at around 10:30 to 11:00am. Which means that you'll be on your way back to the airport when the shops reopen. The only places open at that time (midninght - 5am) are some nightclubs, pubs and bars.

Markh,
Now your trip makes a lot more sense :p . Anyway, as Malaysian said Kuala Lumpur is now the shopping haven for this region. As you will be with the wife and kids I advise you to take the Airport Taxi/Limo. It'll be more economical.
I guess your first destination should be the KL Petronas Twin Towers. Plenty of shopping and food there. If thats not enough then the Bukit Bintang Area should be your next destination. Ask a cab to take you to Bukit Bintang or Lot 10. They are both shopping malls. There are around 5 shopping complexes/malls within a 3 km radius so that should be sufficient. Different malls have different niche.
If youre looking for electronic equiptment - Sungai Wang Plaza
Branded goods - Starhill or Lot 10
Good Food - anywhere.
Hope this has helped... Do you want to do anything esle besides shopping??

Hello Mark,
As I will have the same free time in Kuala Lumpur during my next trip in March (almost 12 hours before my flight back to London), may I ask you to post some comments when you get back?
Many thanks,
Bobby

I am not sure since I do not buy fake goods but if you want to try, go to Petaling Street in KL during the evening...plenty to choose from.

Yup... for imitation goods in KL, theres only one place and its Petaling Street... I'm not so sure about the quality in comparison to the Thai imitations though... it could be of better or worse...
