I wanted to move to Thailand for retirement , because it "was" a country in harmony with Buddah, and specially I dont understand how they can pick him now , after all the problems the muslims made down South recently !!
Hope the King knows what he's doing !!!

Latest is that Thai army chief says that military power in Thailand will stay for 2 weeks.

I don't know if you guys can see this kind of news in LOS at the moment ? Don't want to double post news.

He's a highly decorated, highly respected serving soldier. Having a muslim in such a position could help with the situation in the South surely?

Pick him ?? Who 'picked' him.. Its not like hes elected.. not like hes being proposed as a new PM (sounds like BoT boss)..

And while it may be hard for you to understand just becuase someone is a muslim doesnt make them a fundamentalist nutter..

This is a mail , I got from my Developer in Thailand.......

As you may have seen the breaking news regarding the coup in Thailand, we would like to explain more about the situation here. I'm in Bangkok very close to what happens here myself. Don't worry. Things are very fine here; there is no violence or fighting at all. Many people go out to take pictures with the troops and tanks. It is very odd to see that. It is a very friendly coup indeed.

Airlines and other businesses still operate smoothly as usual.

Actually, we have expected and wished for this coup for a while already; it is purely done for the people and the country.

They promise to return the democratic power to the people asap and they have no interest of keeping power for themselves.

These guys are all the head of solider, marine, air force and police together supported by the privy councilors. They are very decent and admirable. All well-educated people in Thailand are very glad to support this coup since Taksin’s government was so corrupted.

This will make things better and clearer. We expect that within a month time, things should be back to normal and move for the better.

We are all very happy here, even celebrated last night.

It's interesting that The Nation is reporting things before they happen. It looks like Thaksin is either in London or is on the way, they went to print last night confirming it?

Good pics..

All looks very calm and civilized.. The whole mood seems to be one of safety and security.. I hope major news services pick up on this important issue.. This seems to be a peaceful change of power.

Gazette helps swamped Nation website

For info: The Nation can be read from Phuket Gazette Website.

PHUKET: Following the coup last night, the website of The Nation newspaper is being overwhelmed by readers.

To help report today's unfolding events, the Gazette is posting Nation stories here on our website.

Gazette are part owned by The Nation, so no surprise there really.

Mrs Steve has a brother in the army and he has been called up overnight to Bangkok from Kanchanaburi (scuse spelling). He says that they are all pretty nervous just now and expecting some problems.

She has just spoke to him on the phone and he is on the streets in Bangkok, is there a demonstration planned for today? Or maybe Thaksin's supporters are expected in town?

Latest ticker I am looking at says the military are saying elections unlikely for a year.

Saw a Dep Gen Sec of of a Thai party (didn't see which) earlier say that just bringing in a new constitution will probably take 6 months, and elections would have to follow on after that. He seemed very clued up on the workings of everything so i kinda took what he said at face value.

Not to have elections and be ruled by an interim pm for 12 months will not do much for stability in the country and will just prolong the agony of the situation.

You know, the wife keeps saying 'good' but I just don't see it. What message is this sending to the rest of the world?

If there was an election tomorrow, what rights would Thaksin's supporters have? He has a huge majority in the rural areas. Do those votes not count? Guns and tanks have no place on the streets in a democracy.
