i called Ao as soon as this hit the tape and told her to go home
its not so much for fear her getting caught in anything but with the police attention at its limit elsewhere, you dont know what else can happen on the streets
plus, maybe the taxi situation will get crazy

Well it's around midnight in Bangkok, so no curfew or anything. Maybe the army are on the streets as a bit of backup for the police?

We just got the "everybody stay calm" announcement on TV, then all stations went back to playing marching music and images of the King.

It's so weird to see CNN & Sky devided in 2 screens, one showing the militarys in Bangkok and the other half hearing Bush talking about peace and the UN commitee....talk about timing here.

The BBC reports that police AND army are in control of Government buildings, but that does not tell us whether they are working for or against the coup.

BBC:"Our correspondent Jonathan Head said it was not clear which faction had taken the initiative. "

Nothing to do but wait and see...

Latest from Foreign Office (UK) sight:-
On 19 September 2006 the Thai Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, declared a state of emergency in Bangkok. There have been reports of tanks taking up position around the Thai government headquarters in Bangkok and blocking traffic. The British Embassy in Bangkok is closely monitoring the situation. If you intend to travel to, or are currently in Bangkok, you should monitor all available information on the local situation. You should also avoid any demonstrations and large crowds. Movements around government buildings and in public may be restricted until the situation becomes clearer.

Seems like its limitted to Bangkok. See what happens when mr T comes back on Thursday.

2 army factions?

I'm sitting here with a high speed modem looking at everything I can find. It seems as though two army factions are at odds, but it's not clear who has the upper hand. The faction opposing Thaksin apparently has control of the media.

Never one to pass up a good opportunity. I have some very Gucci body armour and jaunty kevlar helmets at a very reasonable price if anyone is interested!! Any colour you want.....As long as it's Black!

Joking apart, I just hope everyones plans can still go ahead.

I've just seen Thaksin nodding off whilst listening to George Dubbleya at the UN General assembly.

What's really strange is that not many ppl know about it in Bangkok. My GF's brother is a cab driver in BKK and knew nothing about til her phone call. So she told him to just stay at home for today.

Associated Press report:

Quote:
An announcement on Thai television declared that a "Council of Administrative Reform" with King Bhumibol Adulyadej as head of state had seized power in Bangkok and nearby provinces without any resistance.

Soldiers on the streets have yellow ribbons on their shoulders, so the king has the government buildings by the look of it.
