THB move
USD/THB moved 60 satang (1.6%) on this news - was trading 37.20 before news now 37.80.
Would imagine SET closed tomorrow - if not expect 5-8% plunge on open.

What's scary i think, is the fact that the King didn't yet respond on the things happening. Wouldn't that be normal, or is this one of those things that "are not done" for Thai Royals.

A coup launched without implying that you were supporting the king wouldn't get very far in Thailand currently would it?

Again, limited knowledge as you syeatman, but I am guessing there are very loyal pro-Thaksin supporters in the Military and no doubt a 'hard-core' group in the heirarchy of the Thai Police Force who couldn't give a monkeys about the King.
He is and should remain 'above' Government and Politics but I don't doubt he has the 'last say' as would My Queen in the UK when the 'Armed Forces of the people' get involved!

Right. It's like saying "I like spicy food" here. Every political movement defers to the King.

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP)--The Thai military Tuesday arrested two key government leaders in the wake of their coup bid against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra
The coup makers arrested Deputy Prime Minister Chitchai Wannasathit and Defense Minister Thammarak Isaragura na Ayuthaya - two close loyalists of Thaksin - and that Chitchai agreed to resign, according to an army general, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The same general said Army Commander-in-Chief Gen. Sondhi Boonyaratkalin had used the military to take over power from the prime minister.
In a vain attempt to stave off the coup attempt, Thaksin had ordered Sondhi to report to Chitchai immediately, effectively dismissing him from his military duties. Thaksin told of his move when he declared a state of emergency for Bangkok. Thaksin made the announcement from New York, where he was attending the U.N.'s General Assembly.

Just been on Sky News that Thaksin will not be going back to Thailand 'immediately'. Will be interesting to see what he says at the UN now.

Personally, i think Thailand just screwed up a good thing
just from a street, ground level perspective over here in the states, Thailand was becoming a common name and place over here. and this just really makes people percieve as just another 3rd world country again

Don't know yet what's going to happen with the gov't. However, if they don't clean up this mess by the end of the week:
tourism = screwed
foreign investment =screwed
They'll have to start treating the mongers and backpackers nicely again.

Interesting what Stick said on his site:
11:58 PM - we just lost the cable news channels. CNN, UBC etc are all displaying an apology message...ok, now I am starting to get a bit more concerned. It would seem UBC has just come under control of whoever is behind this. How much longer will we have net access for?

I don't think there is reason to panic. This is not a coup like in the Philipinnes.
They just want the prime-minister out. I am maybe a bit overoptimistic, but it is not about the military taking over Thailand. They want another goverment, as an important army-chief, has been fired.
Could be some weird weeks ahead, but I think everything will turn to normal, much sooner as you think.
I saw Thai people smiling in buses on the news, with army-guys heavely armed next to them. But only thinking about your vacation is a bit egocentric, I think!

Media going on about a coup- this just seems to be two factions jostling for position not a full blown takeover of the country. Will calm down soon with no need to 'overthrow' anyone. This will hopefully kick start the election process as opposed to the way things have been dragging. However can't get into Bangkok Post or Nation websites at the moment so they must be restricting internet
