Newsreporter based in BKK has just said on BBC that IF there will be any violence, it is likely to be between the police and the army. This is based on the fact that Thaksin was a policeman at one time.

It's the loyalty by certain members in the Military and Police for Thaksin I was trying to express my opinion about and thier possible influence in trying to stop the coup. I am aware of Thais undying loyalty to the King but he isn't the one trying to be ousted and his Government removed.
I just hope Thaksin retires to his luxury apartment in NY with his cronies after his soon to be given speech. That he mulls over what has happened at home, realises he is 'persona non grata' in his own country and realises that "Hey! I am a very wealthy man" and retires gracefully and invests his money in Thailand. That there are new elections for the people and that whoever wins the popular vote does what is good and beneficial for the country as a whole. Not raping it for the good and benefit of themselves and thier hangers on.

you hit the nail on the head.the coup was planned to take place while pm thakisn was away his a$$ will be removed very soon ,though I don't thing he will be given the chance to retires gracefully in thailand and invest his money that easy,as you said he's a <persona non grata> and so hated by the majority of thais,on the contrary I believe he will be given a very bad time.

I wonder where he has his money stashed? He might end up a bit skint after this escapade.

Ok, that makes me a little nervous. I heard they (the army) arrested the vice-PM and the minister (of defense) I think, but I didn't think the army would meddle any deeper. I think this coup is starting to dig a deep hole for Thailand.

We don't disagree, thinking about it, it probably would be necessary to indicate their loyalty publicly in case anyone assumed otherwise.

I'm sure that expected reshuffle of army top brass was part of it as well as it was expected to move all the pro-taksin generals to bangkok.

That was my first post in this thread, he's probably better off staying put now. What is he going to come back to, and more specifically how will he even get into the country if the army are in control and tell him to bugger off.
edit: what's with the green? plays havoc with quoting you!

Still can access TV , The Nation and BKK Post -
The army commander Gen Sonthi Boonyarataglin staged a coup d'etat Tuesday evening (Thailand time) and ousted the government of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Mr Thaksin was in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, and had earlier tried to dismiss Gen Sonthi and order troops back to their barracks. His order, via a voice broadcast on TV and radio, was cut off halfway as the dramatic coup unfolded.
Tanks and troops of the Fourth Cavalry Battalion moved into strategic points in Bangkok, including the Royal Plaza.
A so-called "Democratic Reform Council" declared itself in control, a throwback to former coups when military commanders promised more democratic reform.
Like most of the previous 19 military coups since 1932, there was no violence. Tanks surrounded Government House and apparently some newspaper offices. All broadcasting on local TV was interrupted, and replaced by a notice which stated the military takeover and apologised "for any inconvenience."
At least in the early hours of the coup, most other communications continued uninterrupted. Cable-TV broadcasts continued -- including foreign news reports of the coup -- and the airports remained open.
Thailand websites including the Bangkok Post were operating under very heavy loads as people tried to find out what was happening. As always, local broadcast media contained no breaking updates.
Mr Thaksin said he would return to Thailand from New York. The shadowy coup administrators said he would not be allowed to resume his post as prime minister.
Sources told the Bangkok Post that Privy Council president Gen Prem Tinsulananonda had tried and failed to mediate between the coup forces and another army faction loyal to Mr Thaksin. Gen Prem was summoned to the Royal Palace.
The whereabouts of most of the members the government were unknown. Mr Thaksin, Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai and Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkol were in New York. Deputy Prime Minister Chidchai Wannasathit, the caretaker premier, was reportedly detained by the military.

The news is saying that Thaksin had half the seats removed aboard the Russian charter plane for his flight to New York, to make room for thirty suitcases.
Can a few billion baht fit in 30 suitcases?

THE Deputy PM is at the UN with Thaksin, but there are seven DPMs, Pol.Gen. Chitchai Wannasathit, who was 'arrested' is number three on the list. (Oh, and as a general he outranks Lt Col. Thaksin )

Agreed. So please understand that everything I am writing is not bull. I am getting my info from Thai TV right now, translated by my wife.
Now, whether the Thai news reporters have their info straight is another issue...
