Im 17 days out and have a change at KL...I guess if the situation worsens Ill have to take a look at Cambodia or the Phillipines....would be a shame but...IM HAPPY WITH A THAI HOLIDAY!!!!

Market Impact
Thai stocks listed in Singapore are down 3-6% - not too severe really, while the uncertainty remains over the outcome of this coup.
Place to watch is the THB interest swap curve - currently offshore implied 10yr THB IR swap is trading 55bp over yesterday BKK close - this is where the pain will be felt most as investors bail out of the debt market.
Historical FIDF Quoted Yields
Fitch, S&P and Moodys all put Thailand on watch for possible negative downgrade.
THB firms slightly from 37.80 NY close - now trading 37.72.
So far reaction is pretty well contained and little spill over into other asian economies.

The main worry now is Thaksin's reaction. As long as he lays down and plays dead, things will proceed peacably. However, he is a hot-headed, unpredictable power-monger so it is still possible he may attempt a counter-coup, at which point things could get bloody.
Let's hope it doesn't happen.
As to how the coup is progressing now, it's still peaceful and many Thais still don't have any clue that it's happened. Outside my house, workers are tearing up roads and traffic is weaving their way through it as usual.
The generals are in a meeting this morning with government officials now and we'll know more by lunchtime.
LivinLos, your comments on your girlfriend's apathy are hilarious. She is probably typical of most Thais in her attitude about the news. My poor wife has had her eyes pried open by her media-hound husband, so she's rivetted to the TV news, furiously taking notes on important points to relate to me and looking up difficult words like, 'constitution'.

For baht.. One of the effects of the visa regs was many people rushing 3 million baht into the country to beat the Oct 1st deadline on closing the special investor visa..
I bet all those special investors are smarting now.. Baht tumble.. Condo values..
Ouch.

The sad thing is.. If I hadnt told her the was a coup.. she wouldnt have known..
I know shes not the sharpest knife in the drawer but shes pretty typical.. Mai Pen Rai..
Lets hope that as an ex copper Taxin doesnt feel he has support within that branch of power.. Police are armed too.. I tend to feel he knows hes marginalised.. His wife was in Sing.. His kid left last night.. Its said he took 60 suitcases of family possessions and hierlooms when he went to UN.. Sounds like the rats and the sinking ship to me..

Thai Coup Positive If It Resolves Political Crisis-Fitch
Interesting take on the thai economy's reaction to the coup
BANGKOK (Dow Jones)--Fitch Ratings has put its sovereign credit ratings for Thailand on Rating Watch Negative after a military coup late Tuesday against a caretaker government, but the agency said the coup might have a positive effect if it leads to a resolution of the country's long-running political crisis.
"One way to look at it is that the coup leads to a political resolution, and the economy could bounce back quickly," Fitch's Hong Kong-based head of Asian sovereign ratings James McCormack said Wednesday in a telephone interview with Dow Jones Newswires.
Thailand has been under a caretaker government since Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra dissolved the parliament in February. The results of snap polls in April were annulled due to irregularities. [ 20-09-06 0109GMT ]
McCormack said Fitch is standing by its forecasts on Thailand's gross domestic product growth this year and next of 4.3% and 4.6% respectively.
He said the forecasts have priced in delays in government construction spending and weakening investment sentiment due to the months-long political crisis. The Thai economy grew 4.5% in 2005.
"The best-case scenario is there is a quick resolution after the coup and an effective government is put in place," he said.
McCormack said the country's exports would be able to help cushion economic fallout from the coup in the short term.
However, if the conflict drags on, the country would risk rating downgrades, he said.
"We will keep a close look on how things would unfold," he said.
Fitch places Thailand's sovereign rating at BBB+ with a stable outlook.
Fitch earlier said Wednesday its decision to put Thailand on Rating Watch Negative reflected "the increased uncertainty about sovereign credit trends in Thailand in light of the apparent coup attempt."
Late Tuesday in Thailand, military troops surrounded government offices and an army spokesman said the country's commander-in-chief would serve as acting prime minister. Thaksin is currently in New York.

Some posts dotted about are claiming all land borders closed.. Thats a fairly large development and definetly a change to the business as usual lines..
Perhaps the immigration officers took the national holiday too..

As said, unless Taksin can mount a counter-coup, then it's all cool. I don't think he can do it.
In a few days the situation will be clear, but I certainly wouldn't change my plans, if I were you!

Interestingly, the official Bangkok airport real time flight departures page shows no flights for today. Only the schedule for tomorrow's flights are shown.

Arrivals are shown and updated, and things look generally on time

Just met someone that went through Bangkok airport this morning....he said no problem....business as usual. I think some people will be frightened, as any adverse news will scare them. i think overall this will have very little effect except, possibly, short term weaking of baht, making Thai destination more affordable. In the long run, who knows, but I am quite optimistic.

The generals just made an announcement with a list of coup do's and don't's.
They asked people in rural areas to remain where they were, not to come to Bangkok and complicate things.
They advised against stockpiling and warned that any stores found selling goods at inflated prices would be punished with up to 2 years in prison and fined 100,000 baht.
They also prohibited political discussions in groups of more than five people, especially if the group includes government officials.
They are now addressing a gathering of foreign diplomats to allay their concerns.
They're still skirting the major issue:
Are the bars open???

If K. Devakula - Head of The Bank of Thailand (as The Nation reports) is confirmed as new interim PM this would be seen a safe positive - THB holding steady at 37.75.
(Cant get into Nation website currently).

This is the interesting issue..
I think the coup leaders have inimated and hinted to media that the king is 'with them' but theres been no news from the king himself that I can see..
So to believe the people commiting the coup.. Who say they have the kings support.. When whoever has the kings support by definition will have the populations support.. Seems a bit convienient to me.
I too have heard this hint.. But the next question is who says so..
