Compaired to Hungary - think Thailand (like after the tsunami) has behaved pretty admirably.

Don't panic guys. Everything was scheduled as the Bangkok Post and the Nation already stated a possible military invertion on their last week's editions.
IMHO, it's the best thing that can happen to unlock the current political chaos. I just wonder if their beloved PM will dare to return to Thailand.
Or is it simply a way to postpone the new airport's grand opening ?

Typical Western media tonight.
All the news clips are showing is tanks rolling down the streets and army personnel with machine guns in hand.

Looks like Thaksin's throwing in the towel:
AP 21 minutes ago:
Thaksin's official government spokesman, Surapong Suebwonglee, also with Thaksin and contacted by phone from Bangkok, painted a gloomier picture.
"We have to accept what happened," he said. "We are not coming back soon."

Thaksin would be mad to return until he has received guarantees for his safety and that no charges, genuine or otherwise, will be brought against him. One member of a former government has already stated that Thaksin will be welcome to contend the next election, but it's Not clear with what, if any, authority he made this statement.
In theory, since the elections were set to go ahead in November, the junta could gain a lot of brownie points internationally by going ahead with that - that would be a real PR coup. However political considerations regarding the reliability of bodies like the election commission may well force or allow a delay depending on your POV.

Famous Last Words

Famous Last Words of Gen. Sondhi:
(AP newsline) As recently as March, Sondhi, the army chief and Tuesday's coup leader, sought to ease speculation the military might join the protests against Thaksin.
"The army will not get involved in the political conflict. Political troubles should be resolved by politicians," Sondhi said then. "Military coups are a thing of the past."
But, of course, that was then and this is now. What a difference 6 months makes; all the difference in the world!

My opinion too. I'm sure that HM the King gave his green light to Gen. Sonthi. For me, it's the only way to stop the current political chaos.

Nicke posted previously an article which said that his wife went (flew) to Malaysia on Monday evening already. Guess they all took a hike on time.

Coup In Progress?
Quote:

I wake up now, the first thing Ead tell me is that the King was behind it
|
Well the funny thing is that army chief Sonthi Boonyaratglin who directed the coup against mr T have strong bonds to the popular King.He is an highly
decorate war veteran and was the first muslim ever to
be appointed as a military chief in Thailand. He has been served in the royal infantry, before he self manage many diffrent military groups, and some special train elite groups.
Before the coup had Sonthi many times been in clinch with mr T becouse of the security policy.
He has been known as a person who belives in dialogue with the rebels.
He has from time to time maked a statement on behalf of the King about the political situation in Thailand and had talks with the King on Tuesday.
"As one of hes majesty soldiers i wish to help him
and lighten hes worries and the army will listen to
the advice he gives us have he said earlyer"

Gen. Sondhi is said to be a close personal friend and confidant of the King, so you can be almost certain that the King knew exactly what was going on, and gave his consent.
BTW, did you know that Gen. Sondhi, the leader of the coup, and now the acting PM, is a Muslim?

And THAT really cracks me up. My GF got her Visa declined by the UK embassy because she couldn't provide sufficient evidence that she will return to Thailand.
Well, evidence for Mr Taxin that he will NOT return to Thailand is pretty obvious and he still get in. Life's not fair ;-(
Ahh..next time I choose a girl with diplomatic status ;-)

There were too many rumours so everyone knew that something will happen. I remember last thursday when I told my girlfriend: watch out! Something will happen next week when Thanksin will be outside Thailand.

Yes, I'm aware of that and I don't mind. Thailand is a democracy and he has the right to be a muslim.
