From Reuters website.

Quote:
"I received more than 10 calls from people saying they had seen several tanks on the street and asking in a shaky voice if there was a coup," said Jakrapan Kunanyatirakul of FM 91 traffic radio.

"We called the army for an explanation and the answer was it was troops returning from up-country exercises."

Military Coup In Progress?

the picture is unclear - tanks are blocking the street to government buildings in bkk, thaskin has declared SOE in bankok - big demonstrations were planned against thaskin tonight in bkk -it is unclear what is happening and whether this move is engineered by thaskin or against him. the tv is censored - do the mods want us to update tourists and expats who have no access to tv news?

Practice Run !!!

When I was flying out on Friday night/Saturday morning , I noticed quite a lot of soldiers at BKK airport. They were very young and just seemed to be sitting around in small groups , but they were all armed , with rifles. Didn't really think too much about it , till midnight , when they all got up and spread out , at equal distances, basically cutting of all the check-in desks.

I just assumed that some "High Ranker" was visiting , and forgot all about it. Looking at it now , it seems more like a "practice run" , and I would take bets that BKK airport is now under army control.

can someone explain this in a dumbed down version?

what does this mean
what possible ramifications does this have?
what actions would be taken?
is there danger?

Nobody truly knows what is going on yet, so doubt you'll get an explanation, just guess work

latest rumour that it is pro-taksin supporters out to stop a military coup, martial law and curfew declared. tanks around the royal palace and iTV.

Tanks and heavy vehicles rolling into BKK as I write this. Wow, I had no idea things were this bad for Thaksin. Well, he is a billionaire and likely takes advantage of his status like a mo fo. He didn't get to be that rich without stepping on some toes, no?

Paulie , any chance you can change the title of your post to give a clear lead, ie. State of Emergency.

So far there are about 4-5 threads running and it would be better to keep it to one , so that all the news is in the same thread.

All Thai TV stations are playing endless loops of military music and images of the King, which means that there are soldiers in every TV station.

But there's luckily no agression sofar and it doesn't look like there's going to be. It's all very dramatic on CNN at the moment. I called a friend in Surin and they have no idea what's going on. Complete blind eye for them.

Wouldn't be sure on the agression. There is 2 parties looking for a clash. Not good.

A BBC interviewee, assistant news editor of the Bangkok Post, was saying that rumours of a coup were circulating from about 7pm and it was planned for midnight. Since tanks arrived at 10pm either they are early or were placed to resist the coup.

UK Foreign Office is saying there appears to be a coup in progress and UK citizens in or planning to travel to Thailand should monitor the situation carefully'.

British Airways say their 2200BST flight LHR to BKK will go ahead as scheduled.

More important, let's hope that it does not create any problems for all of our friends who work and live in LOS.

It looks like changes to the title are ignored even under advanced editing. I suspect a mod. will have to create a new thread and transfer all these messages across.
