Internet Piracy
Hey just wanted to let you guys know that I my bank account was tapped into last week and the pirates tried to transfer $4,860.00 from my account into an international account. if it weren't for my account having warnings on it, the transaction may have went through. I know I used a couple of public internet sites while in pattaya and bangkok and they could have easily been the ones because i only use my home computer to do transfers. So just be aware of public internet sites while on vacation, and make sure your accounts have instant warnings on any activity to your accounts. It saved me alot of money becuase they caught the tranaction in time before they could be completed, and stopped the transfer.
Hope this helps

Sounds like you were very lucky. This is a very well known scam, and there have been numerous warnings on here about it previously.
DO NOT USE INTERNET CAFES FOR FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS.

You know you never really think about it until it hits you personally. I mean I was astonished when I received the email about a wire transfer. I mean if I did not have the automatic warning, my account would have been hit. I've since changed all of my passwords and PIN. Be aware of public internet sites anywhere, not just overseas.

For online banking, do you have a fixed PIN/password?
For my swedish bank I have a different login password every time and it is only valid for eg 2 minutes. I also have to authorize every tansaction with a one time password.

Just the other day my firend here in Japan was called by his bank, asking him if he spent $20,000 in aplace he never knew existed!!!
I think this problem is happening more and more as people become more dependant on the internet

Programs, called Keyloggers, are spreading like wildfire right now..the solution to it, will proberly the kind of access Nicke has....Different passwords each time you, have any secure transfers on the net.....be it bank E-bay and so on.
I use PC-Cillin from Trend-micro on my PC and server, along with AD-ware Pro.
THere are a host of other programs out there. to scan and erase these programs, but i have had great success, with these 2.

I usually try to put enough in my ATM a/c to cover all contingencies but there are times I need to access my accounts.
Checked out my bank's website and they allow you to create an alternative login with limited facilities.
Have now set up an alternative login that allows me to view all accounts and only transer money bewteen 2 accounts. So, even if someone does trap my signon and password, all they could do would be to transfer money between the 2 nominated accounts.
Thanks slinggalin, you have done me a big favour.

Though very hard to find a idiot proof keylogger that doesnt have its code listed in virus lists.. Try getting a keylogger onto someones machine and its not easy..
You can use tools to mask the code signature.. But usually its keyloggers written and not widely released that are the ones that slip past AV softs..

I have a password and Pin that I can change anytime I like. I changed them once I got off of the phone with my bank after receiving the automatic email about the transfer. the next morning when I logged in, I was told that there were a few unsuccessful log on attempts to my account. apparently trying to see what happened to the transfer and trying to get more.
Now I have authorize every single transaction, plus they changed my account numbers.
That 2 minute password idea seems like a really good idea

I agree. i will be more careful in the future even though I thought i was really being careful then. will try and take care of most of my finances before going off from now on.
All it takes is a computer wiz to hack into the computer you used and bingo.

I have NEVER in my life used internet banking and infact i dont have it and never any use for it... I am old fashioned and go into the bank and do my stuff... It may sound stupid but i have never had any problems... But i do use paypal and that is usually paying for stuff on Ebay/Playasia/Lik-sans etc etc and so far no problems.....
Slinggalin.... I am glad that the transfer didnt go through... That is a big chunck of money to use... As stevem said... Dont use internet cafes for financial stuff... I hope you learn from this experience... But as i said i am glad that it all worked out in the end

thanks Senor,
I had to put this on since it is quite new and I thought it might help other BM'ers. I was lucky. I caught the transaction before it could go through and I got all of my money back.
I know use those items you just mentioned on my accounts as well.
funny how things happen to make you understand things better. I know my accounts and how to manage it 10 times better than before. and yes I will start putting enough funds in my ATM before I go.

wow!!!! I thought mine was alot. thank goodness those transactions take 2-3 days to complete and so the transaction was not completed. It was out of my mutual funds account used to be viewed on my accounts screen. they were able to stop the transaction before it went final. no reports to fill out, thank goodness, due to nothing finalized.
How long did it take for you to get your money back??

Also Remember, if you use your PC in a hotspot, there can always be someone whatching over your shoulder........
Its very easy with the right tools, to control a Hotspot network, so never do any thing involving money transactions, or exchange personal infos, at a hotspot.
