We are all different!!
A few weeks ago I was approached by a guy at work seeking some info on Thailand and Phuket. He advised that his brother had been offered a FREE 3 week vacation with another guy as the travel companion had booked with his G/F and they had split in the run up to the vacation.
Today my workmate tells me that his brother came home 2 weeks early as Bangkok was too hot and humid. The guy never got to Phuket.
I just sat there shaking my head and thinking what a waste.
With most here waiting, researching and organising their next trip(s) has anyone else come across such a situation?

What a waste is right!!someone should have a word with him . Did it not cross his mind that once he got out of the city then things might improve. The humidity in bkk can be very high but thats no reason to go home....He was probably missing his ma's home cooking and getting his underpants ironed 555555

One time I came across something similar. A Dutch girl and her boyfriend (about 18-19 years old) decided to let destiny decide where they would go on holiday by throwing a dart on a world map and they hit Sri Lanka. Once there everything went wrong..... They did not like rice, they did not like the temperature.... The girl was upset when people looked at here when she was topless on the beach so they did not like the people. And on top of all they had a fair deal of bad luck.... hit by a falling coconut, stomach problems, curfew because there where elections. They tried everything to go home earlier, but did not succeed because all plane seats where taken by members of the loosing party in the elections, so they locked themselfs in to their room. SAD SAD SAD.
For myself...... I had the same one time(when i was very young), but that was in Benidorm. And that was because I ran out of money.
Cheers,
Raval

The only time I have come across this sort of situation was when I went to Bali. I got this 2 for 1 offer (stay 2 weeks pay for 1) but I got so bored that I went home after 10 days!!! I had even gotten to the stage of chatting up Falang women at the hotel!!!
It nearly put me off all of Asia until I found LOS!!!!

"well, BKK can be a little overwhelming for a 1st time visitor"
On my first trip I think I would have jumped on a plane a couple of times before I got to Phuket, but I met some great ppl, and got some good advice. The first night I got there I went into to Nana Plaza to have a drink (was staying in a backpackers round the corner.) I had had about half my first drink when I ran to the toilets puking my guts out at all the "enterainment" around. Next day I met up with a guy I met on the plane and we did the tourist thing for a couple of days, honestly if I didnt met this guy to kick around with I think I would have gone home.
Then I left to Pattaya, and same story, didnt like it at first. Met an ex-seal guy that gave me some good advice, (ie. "ur here, enjoy it; at least they are used to farlangs in Pattaya, speak decent english, and you can meet some westerners to hang out with.") Did just that, met two great english guys, and joined in the fun!
Then I hit Phuket and I literally had one of the greatest times of my life!
If I hadnt of stuck it out I would of missed out!

mistake
That guy made a big mistake not checking out Phuket. My first trip to Thailand I spent the first 5 days in Bangkok and hated it and even spent two nights in the hotel room and renting some kind of movie player --I know--what a loser. Then I went to Phuket for a week and loved it and I've been going back every year since.

There are plenty of people that run home crying from Thailand especially BKK. I think opinion is firmly divided between those planning the next trip as soon as they get back and those who swear never again...
I do think there might be more to his coming back than just the heat though, as Murray Head would sing: One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble

I first went to LOS in 87 ... me and two friends. We had the time of our lives. 3 night in BKK then 10 nights in Pattaya. We went home and talked it up big time.
Another friend frenzied and booked a 2 week trip. We told him where to go during the day in BKK (sightseeing and such), where to go at night, NEP, Cowboy, Patpong, and not to spend too much time in Bkk, ie, get to Pattaya (that is all we knew at the time). We also told him he needed to wear long pants at the temples.
Well, he takes cords and a flannel shirt (we assumed he would figure it was the tropics). He said he almost died his first day from heat stroke at the Grand Palace. After that he wouldn't leave his room, except to walk across the street at night from the Nana hotel to NEP (at least he found that).
He came home after one week. Said the heat was too much for him. Granted he was from Vermont (I guess use to the cold). But still, we were all dying as we were counting our days to return to LOS, and he came home early.

Funny stories. It all come to preparation and being open for different cultures.
I can also tell many stories like this from previous trips. The bottom line is that more and more people can afford to and like to travel to exotic places, without trying to learn anything of the country or area where they go to.
Expecting a 3rd world country to be exactly the same as back home, where they everything as they like it to be.
In the past I used to buy travel guides of the various countries I went to or try to get a clear picture from other sources. For this upcoming trip I am glad with the existance of this forum.

Although it is a waste IMHO i believe Thailand isnt for everyone... I like Bangkok myself and could spend 4 or 5 days there before moving on... Some people dont like the heat some dont like the cold... We are all different and this guy obviously didnt like Thailand... Although We are all waiting for our next trips to LOS this guy has worked out it wasnt for him and why should he stay somewhere he doesnt like?
Just my thoughts on this

I should not write this, but as a hotel-manager, I am always suprised by this.
You have people coming to Thailand. They go to Laguna, or Club Med. They even not visit anything, barely go out of their hotel, stay on the beach.
Then at home they say that they have visit Thailand, or give an opinion about the country!
Most of the time, they don't even touch Thai food!!!

Most of this i agree with.... but the last sentence i dont. I have visited Thailand and hardly spent any time in the hotel (Baring a bad hangover and sleeping) But not everyone can stomach Thai food.. Unfortunatly i am one of those that wont eat it... Does that put me in that bracket?

I found Bangkok fascinating the first time I visited. My only experience of Asia til that point had been Singapore twice (sterile, soulless) and Samui (trapped in resort with my blonde neurotic farang ex-girlfriend). So I just loved the organised madness of Bangkok, and the smashing nightlife.

I love Thai food!!!
I eat it at least 3 times a week here in Australia and when I go to Thailand I eat it solid for 2 weeks.
(Although for this next trip I am going to try some of Faulty's western food.)

it all comes down to what you prefer
some are more adventurous, some arent
passing judgement on someone that takes a vacation and stays at laguna
well, they paid alot for that vacation and they are entitled to do what they want
i remember when the market was going crazy 5-6 years ago, id take vacations and lay on the beach for a week
i swear people on this board look down | |
