where to buy a digital camera?
I need to buy a new camera but I am not going through BKK (or I'd go to Pan Tip.) Where in Patong can I get a decent deal, or would I be better buying in Singapore (2hr stopover.)
Thanks.

In Singapore, or even in Oz before you travel. There's not alot of difference in prices anymore.

I used to buy my camera's in Singapore all the time. Bought some high-end ones over the years and usually it saved me up to about 40% depending the model.
Nowadays the price differences between Singapore and Holland are less than before.
Rule 1 is to know exactly what you want (brand, type, model no.) and what the average market price is in your home country.
Rule 2 is to be aware of fake cameras or repaired ones. This is sometimes difficult to see. But the chance of this is pretty high in countries like HongKong, Indonesia or Thailand. At least in Singapore, you can be pretty sure you will get a genuine one.
Good shops in SIngapore are Paradise Silk in Holland Village or most of the shops in Funan Shopping mall.
Success,
Nanook

You will get a genuine one in Singapore but watch out for the guarantee. Check that you have an international guarantee and not a Malaysian one. That is why you will sometimes find a better price for the same camera.

True. Part of the bargaining can be is getting an international warranty certificate. But usually it is not a problem. I always got it without any hassle.

Big C
I bought a Fuji Finepix at Big C Phuket back in 2004. Price very competitive with UK at time. It also came with International Warranty. Only found this out after 2005 trip to LOS when taking photo of GF on plane, plane banked just as I pressed shutter and managed to shoot straight in to sunshine coming thru' window. This fried the circuit board and wiped out camera. On return to UK got in touch Fuji UK and they fixed prob under warranty.

I have always been a proponent of buying electronics "at home". Warranty is the major issue, but additional issues such as line voltage may also be an issue. Last time I was in Singapore Airport, I found the same model camera that I have bought in the US a few weeks earlier costing 10% more than I paid.
For those living in the US and carrying an American Express, remember that Amex will double the warranty if purchased in the US (up to one additional year on Amex and up to three additional years for Centurion Card members). Personally I have had two pieces of electronics repaired/replaced at the expense of Amex.
American Express Buyers Assurance
Similar programs may also be available with other credit and charge cards.

Another alternative is to buy your camera in Malaysia, electronics is Duty Free same like in Singapore.
I usually buy my cameras in Georgetown in Penang, when I do my Visa trips.
There are not as many shops like in Singapore, but prices are very competitive, there are a few shops in Prangin Mall.
I bought my digital camera 50 % cheaper than in Sweden, although it was an old model and it was on sale!
Normally I think they are about 15-20 % cheaper than my home, depends on your bargaining skills as well!
Cheapest place in Thailand to buy electronics I think is Hat Yai, because of the easy access to Malaysia and also lots of malaysian tourists visiting.

As mentionned before:
Did you get an international warranty or a Malaysian, as this is the problem with the cheapest cameras in Singapore???

Yes, I just looked in my old files just to be sure, and I did get Worldwide Service Warranty, it's written in different languages including swedish!
Although I bought expensive models of renowned quality brands like Nikon and Olympus!
I also bought Nikon cameras and lenses in Singapore and always got 1 year worldwide warranty with a written list of authorized repairshops around the world.
Cheaper electronics like radios and walkmans I have only Malaysian Warranty.

Thanks for your help guys.
Bought one yesterday. As for what camera I wanted, it got movie function and goes 'click' when I pessed the button. I'm not a photographer just wanted something to take my holiday snaps with.
$350AUD for a Fuji Finepix F470 6mega pixels. Please dont tell me I paid too much, I dont care!
I was looking for a $300AUD range camera with movie, so Im happy.
Thanks again.

Maybe Central have higher rents?
However, they dont have big memory cards, I wanted a 2gb SD card for my new camera and I bought it at Powerbuy in Central, 2800 baht (80x speed). Its funny, thats what I paid for 128mb few years ago.
Powerbuy had a pretty good selection of memory cards of various models and speed.
