tattoo healing time

I have read some past posts regarding tattoos and time to heal.......

My thinking last time was..not good to get a tat done if you were exposing yourself to the sun, sea,...but when it comes to fitting it in at the end of the trip I didn't have time.

I know I thought this partially because I wanted to show my 'tattaoo made in thailand' out in the open, in thailand on the beach, and when i got home it was under my shirt so do next time...........how do you do it?

Any comments?

Tattoos heal in about three weeks. The worst couple of things you could do would be exposing it to sun and sea, as you know and state. If you're gonna mark your body for life, then I say give it a 100% effort. Do it at home now if you want to show it off on your next trip. If you do it at the beginning of your next trip, you're not going to be showing off anything except a blood clot.

Also, when I am in Thailand, I like to keep my blood inside me. Little cuts scare the crap out of me. I even brush my teeth extra careful. But, maybe I'm a little paranoid???

Good luck whatever you decide though...

Not sure on the healing time! For me anywhere between a couple of weeks to a month depending on the tat! All my stuff is just black ink work and my own designs and drawings. I also have my kids names in various scripts from some of the countries I have lived and worked, latest one was Arabic.

I've had something done in Phuket on most trips over there, sometimes just some more darkening of older and faded work. I can remember when there was just one or two places to get one done. Now they seem to be on every soi corner!

I do normally leave it until a day or two before I am leaving. I book the artist I like and whose work I have seen, I make an appointment in advance and sometimes put a small deposit down. I try to have an easy night on the beer the night before. I just use a plain blokes moisturiser on the wound and try to keep it clean. I still go for a swim and haven't had any problems at all.

Come to think of it, the tattooist has probably more chance of catching something from me than I have from him!

Sun and sea on the wound is not a good idea...I was advised by my tatooist to put preparation H (pile cream 5555) on the wound for a few days.
I have a mate who did'nt bother to cover up or nothing after and his tat is fcuked up now damaged from the sun. This is in ireland btw where the sun is a rare occasion. If you do get one done keep it covered...

all the best

Depends on the type of tattooing done. For machine tatt's usually about two weeks to fully scab up and up to a month for it to fully heal. First two days use a petroleum based jelly and for the rest of the time you can go with a good moisturizer as Denver said. Hydration is key. When I got mine done, I did it on my last day and got it done a few hours before my flight. I tried to avoid having to sleep in the hotel because places charge you if you mess their sheets.

Also as Denver said take it easy on alcohol prior to getting it done because alcohol thins out your blood. It gets messy and collors don't stick so well.

For bamboo tattoos, two days and you can pretty much jump back in the sea water since the needle does not go as deep. Mine healed fully 5 days.

Lucky has it right IMHO.. If you can keep the skin moist for the first few days it tends to heal so much better and faster.. Sun, and swimming will both work against it..

Had my first in May

Im 44 years of age, and having taken advice from the members here, I had one done in May this year at the tatoo place in Soi Viking. The tat guy told me to come on my last day which did. So I did and flew out that night. I bought cream once back in Aus. I had next to no scabbing. In fact so little i was amazed. I had next to no soreness and didnt experince any pain. So can tell you at leats one positive outcome from a Tahiland tat.

I once met a guy who didnt take care of it, and I think the colors faded away and he had to do it again.

Thanks for all your comments! I reckon I'll get one done here then last day of trip in Thailand.

Last time I managed to arrange an appointment at Jimmy Wong's in Nana but I really hadn't made my mind up 100% to do it so cancelled. I'm convinced of it now.

I'm interested in the bamboo aspect, will do some surfing and see what I can find out.

Thanks again.

Had my very first tattoo done there!!!! I bled like a stuck pig , the people at the hotel went ape over what I had done to their sheets (both blood and multi-coloured inks!!) went swimming and laying about in the sun (against recommendations) and still ended up with very little scabbing or problems (did go back to tattoo artist for check up and a few drinks every day for a week!!) and am very happy with my tat.
Every one has different skin types and healing times so a case of suck it and see seems to be the order of the day!!

As has been said in a few other threads.. Go and talk with Em / Am in the tat shop at the left hand side entrance to soi easy / Dragon gogo.. Quality work.
