Happy Loy Kratong Day Everybody !!

I've only been living here a couple of months and don't mean to sound ignorant but can someone enlighten me to the significance of this day?

I am keen to know.

Had a fun Loy Kratong at the wat thai temple in LA. Great food, music, dancing and of course the Miss Noppamas beauty contest. Once all the hi- so locals got their plaques and speeches out of the way it was a fun event.

I was hanging out w/ my thai teacher for a while and she explained the goings on.

Tonight i launched my kratong down the coastline of manhattan beach under the full moon. Should reach LOS?? If falang can enjoy sonkran why not loy karatong.

Loy Kratong is Thailand's coolest holiday, IMO. Chiang Mai is the best place to see it, though it happens around the country. Here's a more helpful website.

I go to the one in north hollywood off coldwater. usually up there every saturday morning for thai class and gin kow. getting a little culture as well. interested in hearing more about your shanghai experience.

I was honoured to be invited to Loy Krathong by an old flame (No pun intended) called Dwan in Bangkok. All her family were at her little house that had a small garden and backed on to one of those little canals that feed off the main river.

I was made very welcome, the cermony was explained to me, a Krathong was produced for me to float my sins away (It was a big Krathong) and I had brought a couple of hundred bahts worth of fireworks for the kids.

Lovely time, happy memories.......................I'm filling up now!!!

Well theres 3 TG's in the house and my mother who spent all day making Kratongs to float off..and now all of them are standing at the door watching the rain..

Might just make a float run and get soaked then get ready for bangla later.. All a bit Pete Tong..

Lovely as Loy Kratong is.. Candles and hot air ballons dont mix with wind and rain..

My wife is terrified of lightning, but her strong Buddhist beliefs brought us out in the storm to the little lake by Nai Harn Beach, where we stood out in the drenching rain, flicked a bic lighter over some incense sticks and floated our boat of flowers. If Buddha's rewards are commensurate with effort applied, we ought to be in for some very good luck.

Now back home, she's stuck under the covers and I'm breaking house rules by using electricity.....

Yeah they are all terrified of lightning arent they.. Mine will be scared as a pup when lightning storms happen.. Shes actually been crying sometimes !! Considering how much they get you think they would be used to it..

Just did the same as you.. Beach fairly empty, Kratong sellers with full stalls, hard to launch the hot air ballons also.. Cheeky kids (small adults) tried to go out to nick the boon money off our floating kratongs.. They got a sharp stop from me and bro.. Walked along a few meters and waded out nicking someone elses..

Shame really as Mother hadnt seen a Loy Kratong and this was the weakest one I have had.. Better watching the sky lights from the house deck..

Yeah thats the one I was thinking of. I went there one weekend for the thai class and was not really impressed with the instruction. The Dara was suppose to email me the book and never did. Its such a long drive for me too. Maybe Ill check it out again soon. ill give you the skinny on the last trip soon, more details when Paul comes to town of course.

Things dried out later and had a much better round 2 at midnight ish.. Was a bit of a downer first round but so many balloons were launched in the late time as people had waited out the rain.. sky full of them..

Is probably the cutest of the Thai festival days..
