Jason,
Due to a very out of character email I got last month (use phone, email very rarely) I did some more asking around about this.
I sent an email with some flight schedules and got a reply along the lines of 'maybe it's better I get the bus honey can you send me 10000 baht for bus ticket'
Now as I speak to this girl daily I was a bit mystified by the reply.
Turns out the people who do the translations often add in a request for money and then pressure the girl into giving them a percentage.
So be aware of this, though if she doesn't speak english your relationship may turn out to just be with the translator wo/man ......

Good luck!

no probs mate

yeah she is getting a friend to do it for her but it really aint enough i have found that through sending letters to phuket and them never arriving that a translation company would be as corrupt as the postal service,

my gf spoke a little english when i met her
we just talked on the phone, and although sometimes difficult, she picked it up extremely fast
shes no shakespeare, but she speaks, and more importantly, understands english more than most girls i encounter

In that case I am lucky. My gf speaks reasonable good English and also the sms's and emails she is sending to me are not bad, although Thai style English.

Should she wants to come and live in Holland, she will really get a major headache, because the recently introduced Dutch immigration laws, insist on people who want to get a residence permit, to learn basic Dutch and pass a test prior to their formal application. The classes and exam must be taken in Thailand.

Is this same in other countries too?
