How did you experiences it? Was is fun, educational, boring...?

I've not done it myself but a friend has.....
He, and his GF had to go round the whole village, visiting all family, etc. At every house they were offered food, but of course, no drink.
After several such visits my pal asks his girl friend where he can get a drink, so she leads him to this house where the local whiskey maker lives. After imbibing a couple of his concoctions, my friend had an idea, and so asks how much it would cost to buy enough whiskey to make the whole village drunk. Having been told it would be very expensive he manages to negotiate a price of 2000 baht.
He then tells his girl friend that there will be a party for the whole village that evening, and as he has arranged the booze, she has to go organise the food. She was well chuffed that he brought drinks for the whole village; by all accounts the party was a great success, and everyone in the village was well "mau" and had a hangover for the next two days.

Aight aight...
yep, i also wanna go, not soon, but this year at the end i think... that's why i have started this tread, to get some info...
and about 'aliens' was not ment to be as a bad thing, it's just that in some parts, farangs are not seen so much as in phuket etc... and it still happens the whole village walks out to take a look at you... imagine how you feel than... ever wanted to be famous?
Are there any DO's and DONT's that somebody knows?
thanx in advance

Be careful
2 stories.
The first is about a guy who used to work for me.
He has been to Thailand 3 times (only Pattaya).
The first time he met a girl who he says "wasnt a prostitute", but worked locally. He spent all his time with her.
On his second trip, he went to Isaan with her to see her family. It was right on the Laos border.
The taxi would only take them so far. Then they had to stop a truck to take them the last 50km. This cost my friend 2000 baht !! (and his girl negotiated the price!! ).
At the village he was the centre of attention. There was about 30 people in total. They would watch him eat and take a shower. His girlfriend made him pay to feed the village and even buy everyone some new clothes as a gift. In 3 days he spent 20,000 baht
They were just robbing him blind. There was no cashpoints, no bars and he was totally bored. He wont be doing that again.
2nd story is from a great guy I met at xmas, from Ireland. He went away to the village with a girl from Soi Eric, and she went crazy. There was something that he wouldnt do, so she told him she would have him shot.
This guy is no softy. He had served in the Army for a lot of years, but he knew this girl was deadly serious. He stayed in a horrible little room for 2 days without coming out.
I know a lot of people will have had some great times going out to see 'real' Thailand, but remember the situation you put yourself in. You are completely at there mercy. You cant read, talk or write their language, and you dont know the territory.
Have fun!

Not a question of not going, ask yourself how well you know your girl and let her know you know the score about the scams etc... without accusing them, this way they are less likely to take the piss!!

Going to the village
Hi Tarzan,
I too would go to the village if I had the chance. Like you say, be careful.
As for the 500 baht, Jonas knew what would happen if he didnt give it back to me. He would have been walking like John Wayne and talking like a ladyboy
p.s. Do you feel the cold on your head now ?

had to say my bit!!
After reading some of the other ''horror stories i felt i have to tell you about the time when i stayed in issan village for 3 weeks last april and had a great time living out the ''real thai life experience'' as for the village piss taking like previously heard , it sounds to me like the other guys did not know the thai girls they had met at all , did they meet a b/g one night they go village next day?? i new my bird very well and pre-planned the trip/stay with them well in advance, the day i arrived the whole village almost came to greet me , many touching my face and arms saying ''LAW'' meaning handome . i arrived about 2pm tired from long journey by 5pm i was totally pissed because most of the men and women brought loa whiskey and singha/chang beers with them, ice cold from the fridge too!! sometimes i would by her dad some whiskey because he and friends would drink all day night (only 30baht) a bottle, beer was dirt cheap too , not same same patong. i stayed one night at her parents house but after that stayed at her sisters , their house had small shop which sold most things including whisky/beer/ciggies/snacks.
they treated me like a king , fed me so well every day never once asking for money, my b/g said they liked me so much after only 1 week that i was welcome back anytime and they alsmost saw me like family. her sister and husband were fisherman by trade so every day i ate fish (just caught . .. still flapping around) tasted better then patong fish!!! they took me to festivals with the big rockets they let off , king cobra village, places with many monkeys, lao concerts (morlam music ...which were free) , all the girls in the village wanted to marry me , with my blonde hair /blue eyes they treated me like i was david beckham ..cool !!my last day many came to say goodbye and my b/g told me many said they were sad to see me go and i honestly felt the same , the whole life pace so different from home. money wise i did not spend a lot..i ask if i should give money to her sister for having me stay 3 weeks in her home , my b/g tell me ''up 2 u '' but she tell me the least i can do and i agree , i gave them 10,000 baht , pretty cheap really for 3 weeks of living under their roof , waited on hand and foot by her sister who became almost like mother to me and taken many places on trips and i was only expected to pay for lunch while we were out which costs hardly anything up north anyway. they were very emotional when i gave them 10,000 even the husband looked like he was going to cry , the sister did cry and mby b/g told me after she was very sad about me going, all in all it was a wonderful experience and one i will never forget . just remember ..know your b/g very well first and dont forget how poor these people really are , people in patong are rich compared to villagers, to take 3 or 4 of them to restaurant really isnt a hardship for you and me , we are millionaires compared to them, if you want to try it ..talk to your girl first about your fears , worries , ask her what she and the village expect from you , if you worry they going to ask for big money , then talk to HER first , make sure she meets you at airport (probably khon kaen if you go to issan for example) i went all alone and got back alive ..so can you , just open your mind, try to be brave , live a little.
its so different from going to tourist drenched patong that it really is worth the effort you make !!!

to butterfly blonde
I really respect what your saying and to be honest i think i am speaking for most of us in saying im a bit jealous of what you had the good fortune to experiance .
did you take any photographs while you was there ?
do you still keep in touch with with your friend ?
i have heard many stories of Thai village life and like you say as farangs we dont really realise how lucky we are .
am i correct in understanding some basic rules such as single people are not supposed to sleep together,as in the single women(even your b.g.) of a house hold sleep in one room and the single guest (as in us ) are expected to sleep in another.
you never enter a house unless invited in by the male of the house?
the reason i ask is i have a friend who`s family live near the river kwai in the khoncharbi(spelt wrong i know)province.
now i have known my friend for a couple of years and no she is not a b.g ,but a normal girl who works at Bangkok airport.
so i normally always get to see her either as i am passing through or if i am staying over in BKK(and it is just as friends ,deffiantley not a boom boom girl)
anyway every time i meet up with her she always says i am welcome to go and visit her family.Especially as i have spoken to her family on the telephone in the past.
i think may be i should go after reading your story.

village life
Hi Eric,
Like i said before i would recommend trying it at least once because i think you will have a one off experience of the real thai lifestyle away from all the disco's, bars , Mc'donalds falseness of tourist thailand, i did take pics but the 2 reels of film went bad for some reason and was told by the shop they didnt develop (borrowed camera and film from b/g) probably bad idea!! that was my only regret because had some great pics some of which were pics of me at king cobra village with head of a very large python in my mouth as well as me kissing the back of a king cobras head while being held by owner ( he was a crazy guy who persuaded me to do it ) huge expanse of water by the village with very large dam on other side , this is why it was fishing village , would go there most days with her and her cousin to swim , eat , drink , just like patong really. but in a huge lake, had music bars too with many young thais on karaoke so there is things to do , its not all buffalos and rice fields ..lol . had a snake come into the house where i stayed one day so ..bless them , they killed it and cooked it especially for me , i felt honoured and it tasted great , they smoked it like fish. i stayed with lao people between 2 provinces Nongbualumpo and Udon thani , very different people to where you are going because people from issan not same as from the south. as for customs dont forget to take your shoes off when entering any houses , simple stuff really , simple conversation like ask them how they are (sabai dee mai krahb?) and a smile goes a long way . i never ****ed her at mama/papas house out of respect but i stayed at her sisters just up the road and we had our own room to ourselves because the house was big , 1 big open room and 3 small bedrooms so i got one of them . also she told me her parents knew she was b/g so i guess they knew i was banging her ..lol worth noting if you think you can have an open mind , can deal with no aircon (although they did provide me with electric fan)basic toilet ..shower(just cold water from platic container ..tip it over yourself ) and other basics like that then you will be fine , i get the feeling you want to do it and think because you want it then you will enjoy it ..i say go for it , if you are having sex with this girl already then maybe you can speak to her about staying elsewhere ..not her parents house , maybe she have sister or brother with own house and then parents wont say anything i dont think,
anyway i wish u good luck and hope if you do it that you have a good a time as i did ...cheers

The girl i know is not a bar girl and to be honest she is just a friend ,the is no fear of having sex with her as she is not the well lets just say she is not very good looking , but she is a good genuine friend with a good heart.
I met her through icq and we started talking to each other via that ,i found myself helping her with her English studies and for what it was worth she tried to do the same for me and my Thai ,then when i was sick from work for a couple of months i was able to talk to her more regular.
Cut a long story short we swapped phone numbers I called her she called me ,so the next time i was in BKK we meet up spent the day together doing tourist things and became really good friends, that was a couple of years ago now.
Ever since then we have kept in touch and every time i go to LOS even if im just stepping of my flight from london to board my flight to phuket, she still comes and meets me at the terminal, we have a coffee and a chat ,sometimes met her other friends. It is a nice friend ship ,so i think i could trust her and may be visit the village where she is from .
It is good to hear that not every one has horror stories of thai girls,i think the trouble with the forum at times is we all become stero typical after a few visits and hearing the hello you hansome man blah blah(hold my hands up me included but not intensionally).

I agree with butterflyblonde. I had a similar adventure and I told it in my thread of 13.09.03.
I was a guest by a family in a small village in the north of Thailand for 3 days. The people there where very friendly. They show me the small village and all the people want to talk with me. They donīt speak English - I donīt speak Thai (only some phrases) My English and from the Thai Lady where not so good. So the conversation was a little problem - but very funny.
The family give me a lot to eat - most Thai food which was a little bit spicy. The family - about 9 person - where amused about my "burning mouth".
I also got a Thai Whisky called LAO KAO.
I had to drink with everybody. After a few hours, all where drunken - Iīm included. I can say, we had a lot of fun at this day.
As we leave the village I want also give some money for eating and the room to the family but they donīt want anything - they where nearly abused!!! So I give them my last 2 lighter and my pen as present.
So I can not believe all the horror stories I have heard. Of course, some my be true but some are overdone.
If you have a chance to go to a Thai family - go !!!!!!

thanks for the great info, in december i will return to Thailand with my thai GF wich i have here..
you can imagine i know her quite well, we are together for 7/8 months now, not living together, but maybe one day it will happen, for now i find myself too young to live together, and i still live at home with my parents
1st finish my school, and after i want to think about something serious.
But going to the village and family, i already discussed it with my GF's. She found it a great idea. So we want to spend a couple of days there. It's near Nakhon Ratchasima.
I am looking forward to have such a new experience!
