Well been around it.. Its big.. Its going to be great... Probably the biggest change to Patong since I have been here.. It will eventually be great but right now almost nothing is complete or open.. The structure is there but the stores are not open (95%)...
Carrefore.. Well again this is a huge change.. For expats living in town it really will make life easier.. Selections looked great.. Wines.. Cheeses.. Cold cuts.. Even thai meals and noodles done on a pre pack for cheaper than street prices (20 / 25 baht).. The implications of this for existing shops and sellers are big.. Deli can kiss its custom base goodbye (and its premium prices) and pretty much the same for the two under ocean stores (but maybe less so tourist trade).. Though funnily enough the one thing I went to buy (unground coffee beans) they didnt have them so I still went to deli !!!
Drawbacks though.. First let me say I am hardwired to loath shopping.. My blood pressure rises and my tolerance for fools is gone, so any comments from me are from a stress head doing something he hates in a crowd...
But all that said, I park outside the direct entrances, walk in and shop.. After shopping you then pay and... The checkouts are at the inside of the shop (facing into JC complex) !! I mean WTF !!! Checkouts should be near the door.. I admit if you had parked under, there was an escalator down but the basic floor layout and foot traffic design looked totally back to front. Think about it.. When have you ever been to a large supermarket that places the checkouts in the middle and not at the doors ?? Lots of confused people walking back into the store again with paid for items..
Same goes for the layout of the trolley escalators to the floor 2.. They drop the returning line trapped against the wall while the going up line hold everyone there.. Created a total block.. Sorry but this seems screamingly obvious.. Its as though no one has considered flow or anything. It takes 5 mins, for someone with any sense at all, to see this is the wrong way round.
Again maybe its my dislike of people crowds and shopping but the isles felt much more narrow than any other supermarket, often isles are only just wide enough for 2 trolleys perfectly aligned.. Some even bottleneck into one width in places.. Add in 1000's of gawkers and thais inability to have one side of an isle go one way and another go another way, or just standing in the middle of obvious movement points with mouths open, was giving me the fits.. With luck this is just high season new opening volume and things will settle..
Lost of nice smiling girls, loads of selection, interesting looking wine store.. All good things..

Ohhh and in the JC complex they had some cars.. Love the sticker shock..
New range rover.. 8.5 mil baht !!!
SL320 convertable.. 11.2 mil !! I reckon that a SL320 in Europe would be +-60k Euro.. So thats 2.9 mil in Europe to 11.2 mil here.. Hows about that for some import duties !!!

Some of your comment LiL are exactly what I have been also thinking. This place could well see the death of all the smaller traders, and not so small traders such as you mentioned the Ocean Supermarkets. Is this what Patong really needs????
As for Thais and supermarket trolleys, well its leave it where you are and go and look for what your after. This could well be right in the middle of anywhere. I'm for ever moving the trolley after the misses leaves it in the middle of the aisle.
WHat is it with the cars sales inside shopping malls???
I hope they sort things out for all you guys there.

Well for my vote the loss of the tourist pricing from the deli will not be a concern.. and I actually like the look and selection of the old market for veg and fish and perhaps even red meat.. I am not the kind of person that has to have a bit of cling film and a styrofoam packet to feel safe about stuff so they are both a complement and also both next door.
The improvement of the side of town from JC out to Nanai with the new thai market and now JC is huge.. I know it sounds a bit pathetic but I really do think the simple addition of a shop can make so much of a change but it really will IMO..
JC itself will probably be settled and ready for next high season.. I was actually shocked at home much retail space there is.. Underground overground wombeling free.. Miles of it.. By saying feb places will be in means they admit its not this years high season being caught and I am curious how much is actually under contract or under negotiation.. However it works out though I am all for it..

I readily admit I am hardwired to be the worlds worst shopper and simply cannot remain calm when surrounded by people dawdling along.. I hope its just the fact that its all new and 50% of the people were there to have a look... But I still think its layout is unusually tight and they have made some really ass backwards structural choices about foot traffic flows.
But multiple different parma hams and salamis, a wide cheese selection, all your staples, all with parking.. Its a big change.

Once the rest of JC opens up - your tiluks shopping trips are going to get a tad more expensive! (Funny same thing has just happened with huge SM Mall complex in AC) - well look for those BG cost to ratchet up along with thier expectations!

How is it for people that don't have cars?? Are there tuk-tuks reasonably nearby that can take you home with a load of groceries or whatever??

I was gonna get a water cooler also.. Problem I have is I cant even get the regular water guy to come and deliver and my buddy has one of those coolers and has a struggle getting the refills..
They finally had a counter top sized one instead of a floor standing one.. Ideal for me..

The cheapest SL in Holland is the SL350 which starts at arround € 120K excl options. So double the price you thought, but still about half the price in Thailand.

But Holland is expensive for cars. Check the prices in Belgium and Germany.

I was thinking Germany.. Its where I always bought my left ******s..
Tho my 850 came from Belgium.. And yes Dutch BPM tax is high on luxury cars.. Hence why I couldnt sell my 850 in Holland..
First link I saw was an SL 55 AMG (the daddy !!) for 82k Euro..

Just looked.. The list price online starts at 70900.. Of course thats pre options but also pre dealer discussions..
I would imagine theres some trade / dealer price incentives from what they list on the merc websites.

Carrefour good points
I whizzed in through today on my way home.A bit of a recce.
CF means that as a Patong resident I can go get my stuff without needing a bus or taxi.
For anyone wanting only CF the best route in is by Nanai or the new tarmac road ( hopefully to be the Patong by pass)The rear doors of the actual CF are right on the new road.
Pet Food
In the middle on the ground floor next to the escalator is the large pet food section which is very cheap.
Computers and ancillaries
Go up the escallator and on the immediate right is the electronic section selling all things computer nerd.
Booze
Directly leaving the check out area is a wine and beer seller with a reasonable selection from Chile,France,S Africa, and Italy.
I hate shopping so only wing through on missions to get what I want as quick as I can and escape as soon as possible.

Sorry I dont know, but I think Home Pro (Tesco Lotus) have a limit of 3000 baht. I bought plastic table/chairs from there and got it delivered, the washing machine aswell (and installed with a new electric grounding).
I have a car but some things are simply too big for the car.
