I agree its a big addition to Patong, we dont need to go to Phuket Town anymore for the same shopping. Hobbsy also bought a hamburger from Burger King today which he ate when he come to MTB, he said they had a temporary outside thing now until the real shop is open. That isnt bad, its good.

I can understand that its a BIG plus for you expats to have a place to do all your shopping, but is another big western franchise good for somewhere Thai even if it's predominantly there for tourists.

Ok I know we have talked about BK when Ive been in the bar with you in the past, but all these places make me wonder whats the point of going to Thailand if youare just interested in Franchise food. I mean, anywhere you go in PAtong, there is a BLOODY SUBWAY every 20 meters, do we really need to introduce BK in to the mix.

All its going to do is attract more and more 'package pimps' to los and PAtong in particular. Yeah I know thats what the Thai tourist board wants because of the Baht they will bring, but look at the other effects that these people have had on other destinations which have gone down the same route. Soutern Spain, Greece, Algave, parts of Turkey (wheres my Sandwich?) to name just a few in Europe. These places have just become the same places just with waiters with different accents.

Anyway............ I think he J.D and cokes have had a funny effect tonight and had made my brain work(ish).

I understand what you mean.. However you cant really think of Patong as real Thailand anyway... Patong is Thai torremelenos, Thai lite, whatever.. Its a farang party town within Thailand. So inevitably it will provide the services that tourist farangs want.

The bigger possible change is the raising of expectations.. I am thinking that once some of the upper end FL's start seeing shops they can take punters round, with international priced items, watch out !! Lots of big face in finding the richest punter to buy them the high end brands that simply were not there for them.

I don't think it is overdue as much as catching up with reality. It is suprising that a big mall wasn't already there given the 6 million people visiting every year. Of course this project started 4 years ago.

I think gold will still be prefered over Prada by the upper end FL's. Easier to convert to cash.

The mall is far from done. Not as nice as I thought it would be. Doesn't have much of a feeling. Perhaps in another year it will pull together. It took Central a year to really find it's way and it was much further along than this mall. I think this mall is more of a next high season thing.

It is funny that a patong mall is the only one I have every seen lite up like a disco, and with the music too.

Think thats spot on - took another wander around this morning and the spaced out layout is a bit time consuming - the upper floors will take time to get tennents. The Port ... the Flagpole Circle will be surrounded by fast food chains (Burger King has opened already with a makeshift stall at the main entrance (opposite Shark... oh dear I mean the Boxing Stadium)).

Carrefour the oddest layout of all the supermarkets - bizarre but stuff on offer is good selection, better than BigC or Lotus but not better than Tops.

Not sure if anyone else has found this but my mobile went haywire in there.

Agree. Like to get in and out. I found it scattered. You can't see the higher levels well or get a sense of the full mall. The "zoned" concept doesn't work for me. It seems kinda like central broken into parts with Lotus/BigC mall style joining it together.

I think there will be a problem in the rainy season. I didn't see a covered route between the sections in the courtyard area.

Not to mention the slippery wood bridge thing. Kinda like Central's steps over the pond towards starbucks before the gaps were filled in. How many broken legs did it take to realize that was a bad idea.

Again maybe it will work better in a year once it is fully fleshed out. Hope it does.

No matter what, it will fill a huge void for the west coast.

Strangely Carrefour was closed when I was there mid-day.

Am confused by al the shops called 'Opening Soon', you would have thought they'd all have different names. They have put matting over the slippery bridge now but its still a bit dodgy.

Same same me. Whereever I am in the world, I never go to Starbucks, because their coffee is no good in my opinion.

Like LivinLOS, I prefer to buy beans and there is nothing better than that. Sometimes on my trips I bring my own coffee.

From todays Bangkok Post

The operator of the Jungceylon shopping complex in Phuket will borrow 2.6 billion baht from Kasikornbank and Bank of Ayudhya to further expand its shopping complex and hotel at Patong Beach. Phuket Square Co is scheduled to sign the loan deal with the two banks today.

About one-third of the loan proceeds will be used to renovate and adjust some internal store designs, a company executive said. The remaining funds will be spent to complete two wings on the Millennium Resort Phuket, due to open sometime this year. The six-storey, five-star hotel will have 435 rooms.

Kasikornbank and Bank of Ayudhya will each provide half of the loan to Phuket Square with a repayment term of five to six years. Phuket Square will use its shopping complex as collateral.

A source from one of the banks said that it decided to back Phuket Square because it saw huge potential for the shopping complex, which is the largest retail centre on Patong Beach, with a five-star hotel.

Prawit Janyasittikul, Phuket Square's deputy chief executive officer, said Jungceylon had received a warm response from shoppers in its first three weeks.

''We have been very happy to see more than 10,000 shoppers visiting our stores each day,'' he said.

About 90% of the 75,000 square metres at Jungceylon have been leased and all tenants plan to open by next month.

According to Kasikorn Research Center and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, tourism businesses in tsunami-hit provinces such as Phuket and Phangnga have been improving, driven by marketing activities arranged by the private sector and the government.

''The expansion of a lot of new hotels and villas for sale developed by both local and overseas investors has lifted Phuket's reputation among foreign tourists, as well as the expansion of low-cost airlines and direct flights to Phuket,'' added Mr Prawit.

According to CB Richard Ellis Thailand, a property consulting firm, tourist arrivals in Phuket rose by 60% year-on-year from August 2005 to August 2006, according to the latest data available.

Kasikorn Research Center expects that the number of tourists in Phuket this year will increase by 11% to 5.2 million, while the income from tourism will also rise by 19% to 74 billion baht.

Tourism in Phuket recovered last year with the number of tourists increasing by 87% to 4.7 million people. Income rose 120% to 62 billion baht.

Will check out Carrefour nest week but they have scraped off the 'Closed Tuesday' bit from their sign out the back so maybe common sense has prevailed and they will be open every day. Watch this space.

Would guess the Tuesday closing was a concession to Banzaan market and the 1.3 million 7-11's and Family Marts in Patong!

It's good to see this place finally open, sure has taken a long time as I remember seeing it when it was just building foundations from my hotel room on Nanai around 3 years ago.

I think it is good for patong as the ride to Big C or Tesco Lotus from patong was too far IMO. And Ocean is too small for my liking, so it's good to have something as big as that right on the doorstep.

I can remember that. The pic below was taken in April 2004 from Nanai 2, Peter Pan Hotel balcony.

Just tower cranes in the distance then.
