Computer store recommendations in Phuket
Hi All,
Anyone know a good place to buy a notebook pc in Phuket.
My g/f is going back to Uni/College (I can't figure out which it is) to complete her commerce degree.
She knows f* all about computers and has a friend who owns a shop in Phuket Town.
He has quoted her 35k baht for a notebook that sounds like it has a built in camera but I don't know what brand of computer it is, or its configuration.
I have asked her to shop around but she probably won't.
Thanks.
Steve

I used Bus computers in Big C, never had any problems. Even had a laptop die in warranty and was fixed and returned within a week.

The thing is if she doesnt have a pretty good basic knowledge of hardware she will rely totally on sales people who often are clueless..
Theres laptop deals in Lotus and Big C, theres a few stores along Phang Gna Rd in Phuket town (acer is there and acer were great warrantee wise with me).. There are some nice solid tough feeling (build quality good) Compaq machines with a useable spec for 25k or so...
As I said in other threads.. Dont buy any laptop until its pre loaded with Vista and can run the Aero interface IMO.. Important enough to wait a few months.

The older Compaq badged laptops are great little rugged machines. If you can get your hands on one, buy it.

I think the consumer version isn't out yet, so preloaded could be tough to find. After the Jan. 29 launch it could be easier.
Vista certified is enough for now. but personally I wouldn't go anywhere near vista for a year. XP with service pack 2 and no other updates is very stable.

The pirate version is not only out with cracks (extended activation free not registered) but it seems they have manage to clone the registration server and can actually activate and authorise vista accounts by using the ultimate corporate build.. The best build !!
I like vista and am upgrading my desktop shortly due to this.. Will leave laptop linux and XP SP2 as its not going to run Vista well and its not used too much..
Vista is a big step up in UI IMO.. Just as linux was catching up with some nice desktop builds MS again steps up and raises the bar.. Will be interesting to see if any one desktop environment can push ahead with improvements like these or a clean Mac like desktop.. KDE can feel pretty smooth these days but thats XP v KDE, Vista trumps any I have seen by a wide margin.

Should have hold of our corporate kit very soon, will install it on my new PC, but leave the old one as XP.

Corporate keys are not like XP which didnt need activation.. Even corp keys now have individual machine licensing and must be activated as individuals..
Though in a bid to allow the corp side to manage thier own machines they allowed this keyserver solution so corp keys could be in house managed.. Thats crept out into the wild and so people are self registering (every 180 days)..
I am still running a beta build with a MS supplied legit beta key.

Sure Vista is better than XP on the UI side, but for compatibility and bug issues I would recommend non-techies to stick with XP for a while. For someone just needing a laptop for school, Vista doesn't let them do anything more. May actually cause some problems if they need to run special software for some courses.
You just know black hats are going to try and poke many holes into vista over the next few months.

I think it will ramp up at launch time. they will want to create a lot of negative PR for M$oft.

I must say that Dell gives great deals on notebooks aswell as stationary nowadays, thing is Dell dont sell their computers in stores. But the warranty, service guarantee's etc is almost unbeatable aswell as getting what you pay for when it comes to hardware.
I would rather hit myself senseless with a big blunt object then buying a compaq for example. And IBM well, then you are paying alot extra for the brandname.
There are 2 that gives you the hardware that you pay for that is, 1, Dell and 2, Acer - whereas Acer might not be far behind when or even ahead when it comes to hardware power but on the other hand they are lightyears away from Dell's service.
No its not based on my own humble opinion, do some research or even just ask around and im sure thats the answer you will get.
