Question License plate

Have been asked by a mate if I could get a thai license plate when I come over next, I said I dunno but I would ask where I might get my hands on one to add to his collection (that doesn't include stealing one). Any help is appreciated. If there is a collector who is a BM would be even better. Not looking for freebie here but free is always better.

Thai license plate?

If you mean Thai driver license you can get that if you have a international driver licence/permit. You got that from a motor organisation in your home country.

I still dont know what he mean, if he buy a car or motorbike in Thailand, ofcourse he will get a Thai number plate.

If he import a motorbike or car, then I dont know the procedures for getting a Thai number plate.

Not the car or bike, just the thai plate screwed to the bumper/mudguard

Well, I am lost. Why would they issue a Thai number plate for collectors to bring back to Europe or whatever?

Well in the UK and probably elsewhere too, if a car is going to be crushed/destroyed, you can buy the number plate if you are a collector.

So maybe there is an old rusted out motorcycle lying abandoned that has a number plate the OP would like to take home.

Sorry Dawsey, I never heard about this. I just thought (I dont know) that invalid number plates would be re-issued to new vehicles when nolonger in use.

That is the case Dawsey. People will collect anything but he is a good guy and I said I would do what I could. I wish I had thought of the handle "the op" when I came in here.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Thanks to for your input Nicke. And another question. My signature appears in the preview of my post but not in the post itself

Think you need a certain number of posts before signature appears.

Talking about number plates....... a few years ago, during Rally Australia, I got involed with the Citroen Team and one of the machanics was desperate to get hold of an Australian number plate!!!!
You would think that a guy working for one of the most high tech car manufactures in the world would know better, but he was last seen wandering around the spectator carpark with a screwdriver in his pocket!!!!!!!

Okay Okay Bono you can have it back, no need for all the subtle 'when I get to 30' lines.

Feck, I loved that anorak.

Hi Talbotman,

Firstly, thanks for your posts on this board. Very inforomative

Regarding 'spotting', I can understand trains and planes but how about 'bread tags'?

Yes, these are the small plastic things that show the us the use by date of the bread.

Google 'bread tags' for more info.

I got into collecting license plates big-time about 10 years ago when I lived in the States. It was quite a challenge trying to get all 50 states -- some have really nice designs and these always seem to be changing. I also managed many of the Canadian provinces (one of my faves is the Northwest Territories one as it's formed in the shape of a polar bear) and a few oddities such as a nice (rare) one for the Aland Islands between Finland and Sweden.

Many license plate collectors specialize in all the different varieties and design changes for a particular U.S. state (let's see, there's regular passenger car plates, truck plates, police and military plates, even special ones for various charitable organizations, and many others). Many states even send out sample license plates (a full-sized plate usually with all 0's in the number and sample stamped on the plate); I remember Alaska would send them out for USD $5.

Some people just love collecting things. License plates are like stamps (many different designs from all over the world, etc.) -- just need more space to store them!

Yeah...I'm kind of a geek...
I did leave my license plates back in the States when I moved to LOS -- but recently when we paid off our vehicle and switched from a red Thai plate (9999) to a nice Phuket special plate I was hoping I could keep the old one. But no... the dealer told me I couldn't have it! (And my Thai wife thought I crazy for even asking...)

Number plates in europe are boring as fook.

No fancy designs, so thats why people can't grasp the concept of collecting them.

As for wanting a thai one, there are scrap dealers around etc. Or just wait for a crash - which is very often then take it once its fallen off. Best place is to wait on top of patong hill in the temple

We have colorful ones in Phuket and they are auctioned out, with, for Thais, lucky numbers. Wonder if I can request my own odd number and get it cheap? (As I dont think Thais like my number anyway)
