It was the point you made about an average wage of 200B a day and there not being a poor Thai here! Just didn't add up as I can walk 200 meters from where I am now and shake thier hands!
If people are on holiday, can't they tip what they want to tip? If they have received good service and feel they want to give a 'thank you' for that it is up to them what they give.........or, is it you think they are under-mining the local tourism industry and economy and because you live here you feel that holiday makers should just leave 10B or nothing at all?
If I am too drunk to know what is going on around me and I get billed for one or two drinks more than I should (Not unique to Thailand) then is that my fault or thiers? It has happened before and will probably happen again.
You always usually end your posts with the proviso " This is just my opinion" Here's mine.............Thanks for the advice...but I'll tip WTF I want to tip!

I used to think the same way, but have had a huge change of heart. The people you can shake hands with down the street are not the people you are in a position to tip though (construction workers, cooks, mechanics). In addition, the tips are generally going to people that do have enough money to live comfortably, the ones in the entertainment zones that give hedonistic pleasure to the farang....
These days, I find my self giving a good tip wherever I go, but usually a better and sometimes unnecessary tip (if deserved) to cooks, mechanics, etc. But, unfortunately, I won't be throwing 500 and 1,000 baht notes around like toilet paper the way I used to. Tired of looking silly, I guess.

Agree Tanman, those are the people down there are on 200B a day.....if they are working! They are the poor of Thailand, well, this part of Thailand. Perhaps it was the wording of the post that I picked up on. Likewise, I have no doubt there are Thais out there infinately more wealthy than me. Girls working the bars get the odd drink now and again.....but that's my call.
I like to think I have been on this planet enough to know who I am tipping, the amount I am tipping, who has deserved it. As you say, if I need some work done on a bike and the guy does the work there and then, I'll tip. If the service in a restaurant has been particularly good, I'll tip.
Gone are the days were I need to feel 'Big' or trying to impress by throwing wads of cash around. Like you, it achieves nothing and certainly doesn't give anyone the impression I imagine people who do that, thinks it transmits.
I just felt (still do!) there is a constant negativity from a certain BM. Which I am not sure is a wind up or not!

So Denver its ok for them to cheat you from what you have said in your post?
If a person deserves a tip, then tip them. Why not? What I am saying is that you don't need to tip them extorniate amounts.
Although you can't really do a direct comparrison back to the west, but if you earn 80 euros a day working. Then someone would tip you maybe 1 euro for working. They wouldnt give you a days wage just because you are working.
Just keep things in perspective with the local economy.
And you comment about me ending it in my oppinion, yes, everything is someones oppinion but some people seem think their oppinion is Gospel, thats why I state it is an oppinion. Too many idiots think what they say is always 100% right, and in their eyes it maybe, but it is still only what THEY think, not what everyone else thinks.

And thats not even factoring the Burmese and migrant workers.. 80 baht a day and a cooked vat of rice for the crew !!! We have a bunch near me and I have had em do some odd jobs around, nice enough, definately hardworking, maybe not the brightest bulb in the ceiling but certainly a tryer..
My buddy who is a developer has a full Burmese crew.. You really wouldnt believe how they were treated by the Thai manager, dogs would have been better cared for.. Buddy has now taken over thier management and pays them (and treats as importantly) fairly.. They are a solid work crew with uber loyalty now.

LivinLOS - too right, the Burmese are damn hard workers as like any migrant in most countries. Mexicans in America etc, they will DO any job because they have that instinct for survival and nothing is too beneath them.
Gets up my nose, when people complain about "immigrants" are stealing "our" jobs. They are doing the jobs because no one in this (or other) country will do it. Only the immigrants will.

I think an important thing I have learned in the short time I have been here....or rather seen.......and this might be a little contencious (Sp) as well.......fire when ready........is catagories of falang.
You wander into a 'middle of the road' bar or restaraunt you discover by chance as you are wandering around and I see little cliques of falang....
The table with the blokes with the 'I been Thailand forever look' about them. Sun-bleached, hand-washed clothes and wafer thin flip-flops as a badge of how long they have been here (or not willing to part with 85 Baht for a new pair) Who resent what they percieve Thailand is becoming or has actually turned into. Reckon they live like a Thai, eat like a Thai but haven't actually assimilated as far into the community as the Thais would have them think they have. Treat the holiday maker with distain.....'What do they know?' Only here for two weeks and ruining it for everybody. Treat the waitress like something they may have stood in. Waitress comes with the bill, it's scrutinised in fine detail and paid to the baht. Tip! What tip!
The table with a bunch of blokes or a family who are here for a break from work or school in thier respective countries. Are treated very well while they are here. Don't know any better about what they are getting or are paying.......or really care because they are having a good time, enjoying themselves, have budgeted for their holiday or time here. Treat the waitress with respect for the job of work she is doing and if she does it well, with a smile, will quite happily leave her with a little something for her efforts.
The table with the falang with the bling, chunk of gold on every finger, hand-made shoes, designer sunglasses and the real Rolex! Bottles of the finest wines and spirits the house has for his entourage of young Thai ladies. Who sit giggling nicely as he lights another hand rolled Cuban. Buys everything the girls who come in the place have to sell, roses, necklaces, hats and wooden frogs! Winks at the waitress and gives her a 1000baht to keep the drinks coming to his table.
These are just my own personal observations over a short time here, I can't afford to sit at table three or would ever want to sit at table one..........

Most thais find money hard to come by, whether its 2oo baht a day on a dusty building site, or 1k baht a trick with a farang they find unattractive.
So when they see a farang throw it away - giving a tip - ie paying more money than they should - they don`t think; `what a hero`, they think; `another fking stupid farang`.

Important to know...
If its your first time you will(probably) overspend and over tip..
Make sure you have plenty change for tips and such(711).
When making withdrawel at atm, dont draw out all thousands. Instead of say 5000b,try 4900 etc and it leaves you with loads of 100baht notes...
Dont be flash....See above how much these people make in a month. We'd piss it up the wall in a few hours...
Keep your wits about you and remember WHERE YOU ARE...Your not at home...
Dont go off with strange men, stick with the girls 555555
Always tell your mummy where you are going 55555

I'm thinking of starting a thong quartet. Music to relax, chill and watch the stars too!
After several beers and some spicy food, I'm sure a good fart over a tensioned gusset string could produce a tonal ambience that would have the punters shouting for more. Obviously we would have to come up with a name and buy a minibus as most small groups do. It certainly has potential.
Any other Thong Thrombonists..........PM me!

My mate told me that AFTER my 1st trip...On that trip i never had any change cos i was always giving it in tips. I was the classic overpayer. My 2nd ever nite in LOS i gave 500b for a 50b taxi fare in BKK Just because i did'nt have anything less and my driver SAID he did'nt have any change. I'd never have the 5b to use the toilet only notes and such..
I soon learnt by my 2nd trip to LOS tho'.

I am an overtipper
always have been, always will
comes from where i grew up
and its not bred from people who think they are showing off by tipping big
its bred from lower-middle class people who worked hard and are happy to share a little with someone like a good bartender, a good waitress that remembers you don't like a straw in your drink, a taxi driver that you have a nice conversation with and hes not on his mobile the whole time calling his home country
I feel I am a pretty intelligent person and know people pretty well, and all i can say is I am pretty happy with most of the repeat service i recieve most places i frequent
and i dont think they look at me as a sucker but more as a person who appreciates good service

If you don't think tipping effects service, then be clear with the service staff in advance that you don't tip or only give 10 baht "because that is enough". See if that effects your service levels.
Tips and service charges is a big part of service people's income in phuket. They pick jobs based on the amount of tips, not base salary.

I was out the other night at a bar where I know the tg working behind the bar for a while. Their was a customer there who the tg was telling me he has only 200bt a day to live on. So what tip could he give?
I (nearly) always give a tip when I think its deserved, or maybe expected. Generally its 20 - 40bt when I pay a bar bill or for food. But have noticed on this trip some bars or restaraunts taking anything up to 100bt as a tip with out asking. Dragon and some other a-go-go's placing 2 10baht coins under the skin of the money thinghy. So you end up giving more money than you think. Though they haven't tried this since I caught them a couple of times.
But I think if you want to give 1000bt, than give 1000bt. Its your money.
(P.S. Its not me with the 200bt budget!)
