I have to say I feel more 'at home' here than anywhere for a long time, more than a decade at least..

Depends where you are. They just rewired the whole electrical and phone system on the main road where I live as part of a road widening and improvement project. New housing projects are required to only send grey water for further treatment. They just brought a water desalinization treatment facility online to bring more potable water to kata/karon/patong. They are working on it.

Most infrastructure issues are more of an issue in Patong than elsewhere on the island.

A nice one, at least.....from Phuket Gazette.....

Limo driver returns B200,000 in ‘lost luggage’

PHUKET: Airport limousine driver Prateep Seeponnok has been commended for returning almost 200,000 baht worth of cash and goods to their Norwegian owner who had left them in his car.

K. Prateep, accompanied by Phuket Vice-Governor Worapot Rattasima and Tourist Police officers, returned the forgotten luggage to Rolf Bernharn Knobloch yesterday.

K. Prateep told the Gazette that, “At 10 pm on January 29 I drove Mr Knobloch from Phuket International Airport to Patong. After I dropped Mr Knobloch off at The Royal Paradise Hotel, I didn’t realize that he had left his bag in my car, so I drove off and parked beside a shop on the way to my house.

“It was then that I saw a bag, very similar to the car’s interior color and easy to miss, behind the front seat. So I called the Tourist Police and reported it as lost property.”

K. Prateep said he turned the money in because it was the right thing to do, and because he was afraid of being arrested if he kept it.

Inside the bag Tourist Police found two smaller bags containing a brown wallet, a black zip wallet with 658 baht, a passport, 87,000 baht in cash, two airplane tickets, a Visa credit card, a bank card, a European travel insurance card, a Nokia mobile phone and charger, three pens and Norwegian kroner equal to 92,000 baht.

Tourist Police contacted Mr Knobloch and made arrangements to return his luggage.

Mr Knobloch was very appreciative and thanked K. Prateep and the Tourist Police.

K. Prateep was given 1,000 baht as a reward for his honesty.

In Norway I think it is custom that the finder of that kind of cash and goods gets 10% and this dude only gives 0,5%!! As I say, Knobloch is NOT a Norwegian name!!

Well guys , hate to disappoint you but it's definately not a Scottish name, sounds more German/Prussian. Wonder why a Norwegian would jump in so quickly to deny that they are Cheap Charlies , can understand the Englishman as we Scots will beat them in the 6 Nations again this year !!!!!

I have to travel a lot around Europe as part of my job and nowhere here is as cheap as Phuket, believe me. Okay, I don't know how long it will last but by way of comparison Cyprus is the most expensive holiday destination in all Europe. The prices in Prague, Budapest, Oslo, London and Stockholm would blow your hat off, not to mention Torremolinos since they got the Euro. And the nearest thing to a BG you can find here in Germany or Holland - you don't want to know how much for a half hour. Phuket is a bit pricey compared to other parts of LOS, for instance BKK but where else can you find so much fun at the price compressed into a couple of square miles? Anyway, the Thais aren't so dumb where money's concerned. If enough tourists move on to cheaper pastures they'll soon get wise and adjust their prices. As an alternaive, camp in Pattaya and fly there when the mood takes you, flights are still a bargain up to now.

I'm always a bit surprised to find someone getting touchy because the locals boys poke a little fun at us in their own language. It's not like that's something uniquely Thai is it?

And we hardly endear ourselves do we? Tip up full of money, go the pub every night and chase around after girls they can't have riding motorbikes they can't afford staying in hotels that would throw them out if they came in the front door.

They work a fourteen hour day and have to watch us drooling over girls and spending enough cash in a fortnight for them to build a house. It can't be only me that's not surprised that they get the hump when we stand and argue over the last 50baht every time we buy a T shirt.

Not half true we must look like arab princes to them , the way farang spend money .... i suppose its little wonder they want to extort us for all we are worth .... but i have to say when im in thailand even if i dont have so much money i still spend like crazy , i dont know what it is.. i just spend spend spend .. cant help it.. mabye i justify it by saying i cant have this muhc fun back in london , if i did it would cost 5 times what im paying ,,, what a justification but so true ....

reminds me of a story my dad told me he found a wallat back in the day with £50 or somehting , mabye in the 60s , this was of course a lot of money, he thought ok ill return it , he was young lad , he went all the way to person house and all he got a chocolate bar i think ,,, what a joke

do the right thing and look what happens people take the pee. i mean it a moral dilemma , i found a shiny nokia in my gym probly worth £200 quid but i handed it in, i believe in karma and i thought things in my life arent going well at all right now why make it worse ...

thing is believe it or not karma , fate whatever wont hit you when your sky high earning the big dough, shopping large living lavish it will hit you when your down and out and really on the floor .. and thats when it hurts believe me . thats todays moral and ethics class over lol
