Easy picture posting.

Seeing some people have a hard time resizing pictures for the forum with the 100KB limit imposted in pic posts maybe the following tool will help.

If using Windows XP you can go to Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP microsofts page to download thier XP powertoys.

One of these is simply called image resizer. It adds a right click option to 'resize image' and can make small medium or large (VGA SVGA and XGA) resized images leaving the orional intact.

Can do entire folders and batches.

Very simple tool.. Ok results..

I'm a fan of IrfanView - Official Homepage - one of the most popular viewers worldwide and it is also free.

You can go into batch mode. Coverts, resizes, renames, and adjusts quality output all in one go.

As a rule of thumb, I resize down to 1024*768 and output JPGs at a quality of 70-80. That usually gets me under the 100k limit while keeping decent picture quality.

I used to use IRFanView all the time.. I liked its batch processing but this powertoy is even more easy to use and is a tiny bit of code.. I also find that the image thats gets spit out from IRFanVIew tends to be a little over sharpened.. Played around with the settings a few times but the images often come out 'harsh' looking.. Not that its of much importance in a web posted pic.

Mostly this was in response to seeing pics posted today (yeah that means you kev) where the pic is left as a high res image but the data is reduced creating the macroblocking.. This powertoy makes it really super simple (see Kev.. Didnt even say idiot proof )..

free utility

I'll generally use photoshop but also use a free tool from Faststone that is easy to use and has a good batch resizing utility. And did I mention that it is free?

I've tried other options but find the windows one the most straightforward and simple to use.

1. Right click on picture/file
2. Click re-size picture
3. Select size
4. Click O.K.

There are probably lots of "better" programs around but for a basic idiot/K2 proof way to post photos on the board I think this is one of the most user friendly.

More useful info from LivinLOS for newbies especially.(oh and K2 )

Made the thread a "sticky" so it keeps its prominence at the top of the posts.

Also ACDSee can resize pictures (also batch) and create pretty small files, most of the time under 100kb limit.

Many other imaging programs have options like "Save optimized..." or "Save for web..." to create small size files.

In XP if you save any sized pic to your PC..........you can send it to yourself via email and select the "make my pics smaller" option window which pops up when sending it.....always takes mine down to less than 100k...........hey presto

Nice pics but a little small on my screen. 1024x768 is a better general size.

I think 800x600 is a better size, big enough for viewing and fits most screens.

This is bit of an experiment but now have 17 resizing thingies on my PC but only one photo .... anyway I tried the 800x600 (using ACDC) and its still turned out too big (180kb) so this is 400x300 (83kb).

Pic is from Jan 1st One Ton Tinman.

LiL I downloaded the XP Resizer but there is no icon for it

Much better Kev , about XP resizer , no need for icon just right click on photo and choose "resize pictures" then choose size you want from window.

Found an option in the ACDC editor that estimate the file size as you vary the dimensions - will have a go using that in future and hopefully get better results.

I'm not going to transfer the 1000's of pics off my laptop which is being retired so whats been posted will have to do. Hopefully you guys can stop moaning/taking the pi$$ out of my pic posting.

Thanks for this thread and the input .

Really is as simple as right click on pic and choose medium size.. That churns out 800x600 pics that are almost all under 100 KB

It appears that after reading one or two trip reports, there are some BMs who have no idea how to get their pics into a post
Hopefully this will help.

Assuming that you have already resized your pics, using the above advise, and saved them to a folder somewhere on your PC ( A new folder "Resized Pics" inside My Pictures is favourite for me), compose your new post.

When you want to add your pic, scroll down the page and find "Manage Attachments". Click on this, and you will see a new window and the words, "Upload a file from your computer". Click on the "Browse" button and a new window opens that asks you to "Choose file"

You now have to find the photo you have resized, so using the down arrow where it says "Look In" find where you have saved your resized pic.
Left click the pic you want, and then click open.

You will then be taken back to the window that says "Manage Attachments" and there will be a file on the top line , that is your pic. Click on "upload" and you will see it added to the bottom of your post as a thumbnail pic. When you have finished uploading pics, (max of 10 per post), click on submit reply button as usual, and your pics will be displayed.

If your pic has not been resized below 100kb, you will get an error message after clicking "Upload". You will have to resize your pic again, and if I do that, I find its best to save it to "Desktop" where its easy to find again.

Hope this helps
