The issue may still be production. The burners and media costs are still pretty high.
I'll be at Pantip in the next week or so and will be looking around. I expect a lot of blank stares.

Yeah but surely the commercial factories are not manually burning on the consumer type blanks..
Its still red laser pressing.. They just need to get those Malay factories churning em out.

Why not just rip them to HDD and re-encode them in WMV9 at 100%? I've got a ton of HD-DVD films if you want to give it a try!

If you have a large library already I really will have to get some more HDs upgrade the old HTPC..
ATMWalking has quite a good HiDef collection also..
Really I likes the idea of using the xbox to delay more hardware purchasing n the computers.

Can the xbox1 do 720p media files? The 360 used as an extender can handle High Def WMV files streamed from a MCE PC.

Benjy, where you been brother? Hey we got the HD party going now.
The three of us need to start "loaning our back-ups". I've got over 120 HD movies now. About 10 are HD-DVD raw or reencodes into wmv. The rest are broadcast and mostly .ts files. Over 1.2 terabytes. Then a stupid amount of HD tv kicking around.
Reencoding or real-time transcoding into wmv still takes a beefy system. I'd rather just have that beefy system do the playing and then get the upshot of better picture and sound quality.
I'll PM you my list if you PM me yours

I've got a mega beefy dedicated Encoding machine at home, I'm looking to encode a WMV library of all my DVD's and HD-DVD's - So far I have about 90 DVD's done then I stopped doing it for some reason.
I will take the machine into the office and get the guys to do the encoding for me.
A DVD to WMV (with 5.1 surround) takes about 50 minutes on my machine and is an automated process (apart from choosing PAL/NTSC), I'm guessing a HD-DVD will take 4-5 hours minimum.
Can you convert the TS files into WMV, I've looked into it and can never find any answers - from what I know they are MPEG2 of a sort.

TS to WMVHD is possible... I did it before but would need to look again..
Just watched some downloaded 720p content on the xbox360.. I think it will handle my WMVHD DVD's (all the documentary stuff sent free from MS.. Thanks Billy ) Will give that a test next time I have disc out..
Thing is I am a cheap ****er about some things.. HD-DVD at 30 GB a disk.. Well I would rather have a cheap disc than archive it onto large HD's..
Cant imagine it will be too long until the 300 - 500 price point on pony disks happens.. Once thats the price of HiDef I am on.. I find the 1500 baht a bit more than I want to do..

There is a raging debat about quality loss. TS generally is either MPEG-2 or h.264. Of course hd-dvd vc-1 is a closer cousin of wmv. On the how-to's take a look at Doom9 forums. One reason people are dong the convert is so the can remux in a standard DD 5.1 soundtrack. but ya hd-dvd -> wmv is a different beast and the tools aren't really there yet.
PM me if you want a few good sites that track this. They are private membership sites. You may already be a member.
Are you actually sourcing hd-dvd discs locally or are you finding them from "other sources"?

Yes get them from Bangkok, If you could source them in the US then you could pick them up for as little as 700 baht or less, I pay about 1250 baht on average at the moment.
I like WMV, it tends to make things look a bit plasticky and fake, but that actually suits a lot of films. The best thing is the free software I have, You put in the disk, choose Pal/Ntsc and then hit encode, it rips it, remux's the soundtrack, then encodes it into WMV. About 70% good/bad ratio, The bad ones are either squashed or just don't fill the screen properly (widthways).
I'm not that bothered about the .ts to WMV quality loss, I expect at 720p they will still look better than a standard DVD and thats what I'm after really.

Better than DVD for sure. I'm running at 1080p so I'm a little more sensitive on reencodes. Macroblocking is more obvious as is loss of detail. I ran the new 1080p h.264 fantastic four trailer on the set. Looked way better than in the theater BTW. GF got so excited she was demanding i get the full movie asap. "but honey, it isn't even in the theater. they haven't finished making the movie yet" with her "but you are very clever with internet. You can find, i know." So you have to be careful when you start uping the quality 555555

compare
Thought you may find this interesting. Compares a high bit rate 720p image with a low bitrate deinterlaced 1080i image from a popular tv show. The extra res really shows despite bandwidth.

There are some other DVD vs Broadcast HD vs HD-DVD images I could point you to as well. Can really see the difference.

I must admit I struggle telling the difference between those images, My eyes se a +30% difference between 480p and 720p and perhaps a +10% difference again in 1080p. I've sat at Powerbuy and stood next to the 768p and 1080p TVs and looked at the pixels, they all look the same size to me.
I'm sure it would be a different story if I had been spoiled with 720p images for years but really its my first view of anything other than dodgy Thai DVD's and poor UBC reception.

Woaw is this Phuket-info.com, or abhdtv.com?
But me too, full of HD, display on a HD projector of sony.
But to get "discussions" must be hard in Thailand, as internet is slow.
The HDDVD on the newsgroups are hard to dl, even with a bit better connection.
For the media discs, I think it will take a while until they will really be affordable.
I just bought a 500 G HD, gor about 7500 bath, that will do for a while!
Hd is one of the reasons I do not hang around here anymore, too much time on other forums.
But I always be back!

Well, we are all in Phuket and discussing ways to view HD, I don't see why we wouldn't discuss it here, in fact it makes more sense than to discuss it with people in the USA or Europe who can simply 'turn on their TV' to watch it.

I was not critizising it being discussed here! Just funny, as I spend much time with it myself!

While I am fully in support of the best quality thats you can achieve.. Having a 720p HD2+ projector means I am happy with that rez for the forseable future.
In fact stepping up from recompressed DVD5's to pure 720p is great. Have been toying with directshow filters and some FFDShow on some well mastered regular DVD's and if I could get everything I watch (including TV / UBC) at that level of quality I would be pretty happy..

Those show far greater difference than I would have suspected.. Would love to see them both downrezzed to 720p tho, as to my eyes the sharpness and detail looks greater than purely the resolution advancement..
Ben have you used the HD-DVD drive on a HTPC setup yet ?? What processor requirements are needed for the PowerDVD ultra ?? I am guessing its lower than 1080p WMV discs (the 1080p on DVD9 has to have greater compression workload) ??

I am very interested in HDTV myself, but do everyone play from computer or is there HD DVD or Blueray players available now?
Guess I have to visit the Hobbs for a demo.
