UK guy looking for ideas
hi.
im just going thru a few possibilities of work in phuket. and just wonderd if anyone has any ideas.
i can weld, build computers and trouble shoot, set up networks and work on cars, boats, motorbikes.
but then i suppose a thousand guys in phuket can.
i plan to stay in phuket as long as i can self fund myself whi;le there.
whats the expat scene like , and would there be any point in opening a " expat garage " or something. expat computers maybe. or for the ladies "expat massage madam" ??
any thoughts
andy

Good Luck ellabs,
Have you had a good read in the "Expats" section yet? Loads of advise about work in Phuket, the rules work permits etc.
Try the Search as well, should point you to some info

This is not totally correct You will get no useful information from this poster. Ignore.
Once again, read the threads about working in the Expats section

Not a serious idea, but combining all your talents - would be to set up a garage to install computers in all the tuk-tuks, so there would be a fleet of "internet cafe tuk-tuks" in Phuket. You probably wouldn't be able to work there, but you could manage it, patent the idea and live off the royalties.

In very general terms making a success of a business is very tought..
Tho I will say one thing.. Every farang I know that has big bikes and or cars has trouble finding a real reliable mechanic they can communicate with. Most use (and get massively overcharged by) the main dealers simply as its such a ball ache to deal with Thai mechanics..
The thai mentality of mai pen rai and it will do.. Combined with cost cutting (find my windscreen thread) and the 'its only a farang.. Who cares' all make it a problem.. Add in the while GF's can speak english they often struggle to translate 'master servo' or anything in technical terms I actually do see room for a farang communicator in this somewhere.
Even if it was to be a scene of learning Thai (as it relates to mechanics) and farming work out (you could come and collect.. Take to Thais.. Get work done at farang levels of quality.. Make a margin) to begin with I do see this as a business that has a chance of working in the west coast.
If I had a big bike still there are only 2 places I would take it for anything more than an inner tube or maybe an oil change (and even then have to double check the oil is right kind and level after !!) one of which is a farang owned one.
Its all to do with managing a superior level of service and farang communication, doing what is agreed to do at the agreed price.

Defo agree, a farang mechanical service centre, you could even have a computer place aswell. Train the mechanics/engineers to farang levels of service, but be the go between and face of the business, reckon would work well, not make you a fortune but enough to live on.

Academic skills. It's hard for anyone to prove that you're working. I usually get translations from Germany and England over the net while I'm away. LOS, Oz - makes no difference to my customers. Most don't even know I'm on holiday. 2 or 3days in a internet cafe translating pay for my whole trip. Get languages, it's not so hard.
