How long does Songkran actually last?
Does anyone really know hwo long Songkran actually lasts? What day does it actually start and end on? In other words, how many days will I have to worry about getting soaked to the bone?
Also has anyone gotten sick from getting a mouthful of water from when they get dowsed with water during Songkran?

Songkran is Thai new year, from 13-15 April. The water wars begin on April 12 and continue to April 14. April 13 is the main day I think were all Thai people is also out with their pick-ups to throw water on people.
It's not that bad, it is a funny event, but expect to get wet in any case.

I used to love it - now I really hate it!
15 or so years ago it was fun - in most places.
In Phuket - it's a farce of what it's supposed to mean.
I know MANY Thais who seriously dislike it also these days, probably down to the 'tourist' aspect.
It used to be a great fun thing that stopped at twilight - now it gets really aggressive with ice and all sorts of 'nasty' things being added to the water.
(A typical Western mentality, I suspect).
If you travel to the countryside - you will see a very boysterous (yet - non aggressive) version - much more fun. Also, it tends to last for only a couple of days and at more 'civilised' hours.
PLEASE - before anyone calls me a boring fart, try going through around 8-10 ?? Songkrans before you criticise.
Cheers,
The driv formally know as the sopping wet one! !.

I think one day should be enought, I hate to get wet the third day of water wars when I am fed up with it already. Especially during evening or night time.
Soi Eric is a waterfree zone thought, it is not allowed there and we close on the main day for water wars. (Bars in Patong do not close, just one soi.)

2 or 3 years ago even had one moron walk straight into the bar armed and looking for a fight (water flight that is). He took a pretty quick about turn when he saw me running straight at him.
Just image those high pressure water guns going off inside a gogo bar, how can people be so bloody stupid.
Abit of topic but, about 3 weeks ago, we even a rather largish female get up and relieve herself on the floor.

Some bars on Bangla closed for the festival
I know Steve at the Aussie will be closed(upstairs on Bangla). He has invested too much $ in his sound equipment for someone to soak it. I think there might be some more bars as well that will be closed.

Songkran is an eksperiens if you hav`nt seen it befor.
I have been for 3 songkrans, but now I stay clear.
Have been sick 2 times during the festival. Don`t know if it`s the water, the ice water shok or the alcohol.
If you go out to se the songkran : pack your mobile telefon and your volet in a plastik bag, and wear clothes that you can throve away if you want.

This will be my first trip in april and my first songkran and i must admit im looking forward to it. as others have said after the third day getting soaked it's not so good. As it's my first songkran then maybe it will be alright but then again it could be the only one i come to thailand for.
i'm glad soi eric is water free so at least i can have a drink in peace.
You said the Mai Thai or the Soi Eric will be closed for the main day, but what day is it and are you planning a party with BBQ with the board members for that day since there will be a lot around. If you do im on the list. i'm sure every member can grab some beer, food and one of there bargirls to make it a good day and night and a nice brake from all the water sports ect.
Only 27 days and counting down till i'm in thailand again,
see you soon

Im looking forward to it as well , also my 1st Songkran as i missed it by 2 or maybe 3 days last year . Already thinking about bringing some plastic sealable bags like you get at banks for my money and fags + lighter , already started work on my water/flour resistant costume , pants and vest made from 2 old bin liners I can understand what Nicke and the rest are saying about it becoming tiresome by day 3 , hope i dont get pissed off with it and just try to keep smiling , even on day 3 when water gun warrior number 132 yet again splashes me whilst im lighting a fag , do real fights ever break out because people are getting pissed off with it ??? i would be well ****ed off if someone did it while i was eating at an outdoor restaurant , has that ever happened to anyone ??

A few years ago I was in Phuket for pretty much all of April.
About 5 days before Songkran, I started to see large squirt-guns for sale everywhere. About two days before, I was squitrted by some little kid once in a while. The day before, I got squirted two or three times. Then, the actual day came. If you don't want to get wet and all messed up, just stay in your room and read a book during the day. By 9PM all the comotion was pretty much over. In retrospect, it might be fun to go out and get soaked.

Just a thought from a keen young chap!
How about on the 15th or the 16th getting a heap of girls back to the expat for a pool party (if the owner is cool with that). The thought of a splashing around with bikini clad yopung women seems pretty cool to me.

Hi Baz,
Sounds like a good idea. I think we close at 12th April. During the daytime we should be at Bangla road and play but later we could make a BBQ party or something and avoid the water for a while.

Possible zoning for Songkran
Songkran Drenchings Could Well Be Zoned
NATIONWIDE WATER-THROWING BAN ?
BANGKOK: -- In a bid to curb traffic accidents during next month's long Songkran holiday, the Road Safety Centre will ask the Cabinet to ban water-throwing on public roads and zone the activity in all provinces, a source said yesterday.
Those and other measures proposed by the centre, which is headed by Deputy Prime Minister Cha-turon Chaisang, will be implemented for the "water festival" between April 9 and 18.
Provincial governors will handle the implementation, using a combined budget of Bt117.3 million.
At its meeting today in Pattani province, the Cabinet will be asked to ban the practice of splashing water along public roads.
The once-gentle individual exchange of water has evolved into a raucous frenzy of high-volume drenching that can endanger passing motorists.
The Cabinet will also be asked to set out specific zones for the activity in order to ensure safety, the Government House source said.
If the proposed measures are approved, road repairs and construction will be halted during Songkran and special road signs and lighting will be installed at risky locations.
The centre also wants strict enforcement of traffic laws during the festival, particularly offences involving overtaking, driving against oncoming traffic, speed violations and drunk driving, according to the source.
Statistics show road accidents double or in some places triple during long holidays, when inter-provincial traffic on highways is heavy.
More than 500 people were killed and 37,000 injured in road accidents during Songkran last year.
Source: The Nation
This could be good news for the safety aspect , dont really wanna fall off my bike , lets hope its not just ''talk and no action'' from the goverment
