are their superstitions really true?
so i called my gf last night and she immediately asks me if i was ok?
i said "yes, why you ask?"
she said my picture fell on the floor and if that happens it means that person in the photo may be in danger or have a problem
ironically, i did kind of have a major problem that night before

Superstitions can happen
I grew up in rural Ireland and the older generation was loaded with omens and various pieces of folklore that could be applies to any situation.
I find that in Asia they also have heaps of interesting fears and customs. The most striking thing is that they all are more or less about the same subjects. Birth/Death,farming,floods or droughts all involving supernatural beings.

I grew up listening bout superstitions. Although i dont believe in them, i still respect them.
I have heard stories and some true accounts of people not believing in them and it happened to them.
Some demand scientific explanation, but i just ask them to respect it up to a level of tolerance.

There are just too many to keep track. A lot of them rightly or wrongly get wrapped up with religious beliefs.
One thai guys grandmother had a dream that he would become a monk. A few weeks later she passed. So he sold everything and became a monk.
A neighbor was feeding stray dogs. Caused a huge problem as we soon had 20 fighting over the scraps. She was doing this just in case she was reincarnated as a dog. I meant she would get fed in the next life. All the neighbors complained so now she's screwed.

Same as any superstitions around the world Paul, some have a historical significance, most are said to stop simple people from doing certain things. I read about 300 of the Thai superstitions one day, as ATM said most are to stop you having sex, crops failing or bringing you bad luck. I know thw that 300 wasn't all of the Thai superstitions, so if you did know them all and didn't do any of them you would have to just stay in your room.
I am quite interested in the numbers thingy, my tiraks mum knows how to calculate all the numbers and work out what your life will be like, fecking old witch!!!

My girlfriend is pretty superstitious and almost everything seems to have some sort of hidden meaning or sign.Often I'll ask her how she came to some conclusion and the answer will come back 'written in the hand"-palm reading.
There was a rather strange incident on Phi Phi Island about 5 years ago.
We were staying on a quiet beach away from Tonsai in some nice thatched bungalows.I woke up to find her already in the shower. She was visibly shaken up.Said she had a vivid dream of someone calling her and repeatedly asking her to follow. It was so vivid it had scared her,so she had showered and washed her hair.I figured,oh yeah, another superstition.Anyway she was really shaken up and couldn't stop talking about it.
Of course she mentioned it to some local hotel staff. After a lot of excited jabbering in Thai,we were lead to a grave-site about 200m directly behind our bungalow.Someone had passed away and was buried there.Lots of more excited jabbering, ohhing and ahhing and wide eyes.Cindy kept on showing me her arms with her goosebumps and bristling hair......
Suffice to say, that was the end of our quiet interlude on that side of Phi Phi.We had arrived by speedboat. We left on foot and trekked for about an hour and a half thru the jungle to reach Tonsaai Bay.I struggled to keep up with her.
So in answer to the question, yes,to the superstitious, these superstitions are definately true.

And, that "#25, next month", would be very good day to do (something).
But, (in her next sentence...) "since you not here that day, we check again."
Jeeeezuzzz....where do they come up with this sh1t??????

Here's another.....
After (renting) motorbikes, around Patong for some time....
I decided I'd buy one, for myself.
According to GF, we had to take it to "buddah" to "bless" for good luck.
No problem....after the "monk" splash's down the bike....then, scribbles some stuff on the front, with magic marker...then, (powder's his thumbprints) in the same area....I (then), pay the sum of 2000 baht, for (good luck).
On the way back to Patong, we stop at a red light (intersection).
I notice a "bike wash" place, across the street...and suggest to my GF, that we stop there, so I can "wash this crap, off my new bike"????
Not the most (politically correct) statement, I suppose????
Hey, it must work, though....I haven't crashed yet!

I was getting very strange and weird dreams, but very very vivid, when I was over in Patong just before the Tsunami. At the time I didnt think much about them, just took it as drinking far too much, like any Western person would.
Back then I was with a girl from MTB LT, and she and some of her friends featured in the dreams too. Its strange, but I still can remember the dreams now........ Looking through empty buildings with lots of sand in them. Then people I cant see shouting to me in Thai. There is more I remember, but I wont go in to it.
So maybe these superstitions affect everyone, but us scientific Westeners just dont interpret them for what they are.......... or maybe it was me just drinking too much!

Nightmare.

There is one Chinese saying, when you're pregnant and reading books, dont do a dog ear as bookmark.
A friend of mine did that, when her son was born, one of his ears were like the dog ear like the bookmark.
Of course after a few years, the ear went back to normal.

I reckon some people are more susceptible to these things than others.Have you had any other experiences in your life,at other times or places where no alcohol was involved?

I think that these supersticions are a load of Pony, Otherwise my GF would have won the lottery many many times by now. "Oh look at those mushrooms growing over there oh that means Lottery is going to end in 67" So she then goes and spends a lot of money on 67 oh and just in case 76 oh then one up and one down as well, so thats 2000bt betted and oh the neighbour (who did not see the mushrooms) is going to 1000 Bt too cause my GF is so sure.
I have this crap twice a month, she seldom wins, but her mum, uncle, cousins, buffalo etc who only bet 10 Bt always win.
Like I said a load of Pony.
But.............I do think that all thought the supersicion might only be fanatasy if someone believes it its true for them it can become true. - Up to a point I mean if you see in the Elephant KEE that you can fly, well your gonna quickly be brought back to earth but If an omen indicates you are going to get ill and you really believe it you really could get ill
