Just to cover the obvious, did you point to the exposed engine and make sounds like the engine? I'll do things that make me feel a bit silly if that will be the most effective way of getting my point across.
Just checking

Dunno the Thai word, but in English it's pronounced as "pinging"
Have you tried running a higher octane fuel?
Low octane fuels will cause this problem, also ignition timing as well.
Most new/ish type cars the ignition curve cannot be changed, they are preset from the factory & built into the vehicles computer.
What vehicle is it you're driving?

When I was in the car trade it was 'pinking' or 'pre-ignition', and normally caused by advanced timing, carbon deposits or the wrong fuel.
I have no idea what the Thai for 'pinking' is, but the pantomime trying to explain it might be worth seeing.
It's not just the fuel you are using is it?

These days with variable tming chips they will usually back off ignition until the car doesnt pre ignite.. This is why people will often find reduced octane fuel giving reduced mileage and hence actually costing more per mile..
Run 95 and make sure that no one is putting gasohol in it !! I dont think its as easy to retard the timing on these newer controlled systems.

Pinging (Pinking)
Hi there
Thai word for pre-ignition is gaan ching jòot rá-bèrt
or "การชิงจุดระเบิด" in thai script.
Cheers and good luck with problem

Numerous posts about increasing the Octane level of your fuel….also a clogged air filter might be the culprit as well.

If there isnt.. I think its the kind of subject specific book that you could do well selling ebooks of..
I thought of this myself.. Highly targetted information that is useful to many but hard to obtain. Try asking your GF to explain to a thai mechanic your concerned the that the brake master cylinder isnt holding pressure !! This kind of book having a highly detailed technical terms would be of value to a large number of expats.. I would happily pay 5 usd for it as a download. If I would I tend to think many others would also. Lets say only 3 - 5k people a year bought it.. Thats still 15 - 25k USD in passive income. For a native speaker of both languages this wouldnt take a month to write.
Finding nieches like this could create a good small online income stream.

just tested the phrase on the wife
wife has just finished her first taste of som tam in oz and so is in a very happy mood.
"i think i will never eat in australia" she exclaimed.
so i asked her on her view of this phrase given by sanuk, after about 30 seconds of me making a pinking sound, she declared that it was a good explanation.
but as LIL said to have a handy book on technical terms would be fantastic.

Why do the gas attendants always top off the gas? Don't they know that's bad for the engine.
