Breaking news !!! Jungceylon today

During the rain today, I decided I wanted to go and get a BK Chicken Sandwich.
Then when I arrived at Jungceylon, I saw that the main sail, covering the food court area had ripped one of the foundation on the roof off and trashed some of the corner of the roof.
Debris had hit one of the food stands, I dont know if anyone got hurt.
As I was taking these pictures I was told by a Thai Supervisor setting barriers up: No photo, no photo, and he started pushing me away
However he didnt do that to the old Farang couples or the many Thais that were also taking pictures of it, so I take it he knew I'd be posting them on the internet right away

Loss of face anyone?

Hope no-one got hurt - and this is just the start of the rainy season - some of the wind gusts can be pretty strong.

By the sounds of it, I think it is a loss of face issue or at least a mild coverup attempt. The fact that a "pristine" built building such as the Jungceylon couldn't even withstand a mild wind gust says a lot about the people doing the constuction/architecture, IMO.

Face, face, face... Thailand is the only place in the world I have been to that puts up a fence with blinder sheets of aluminum to shield you (the tourist, and not speaking directly to you Lightemup, but the board) from having to look at buildings being constructed... even if they are million dollar homes...

Thai built.. Scary thing is once one goes theres more strain on the rest !! They want that both fixed and looked into the stress issue fast..

Hardly serious wind today tho.. Sometimes in front of a storm front it really blows..

On the subject of Jungceylon, there are huuuuge cracks appearing on the building already.

I noticed this as I looked outta my window last visit at SB.

Not good for a place that's only a few mths old.

Good scoop!

The rain and wind were mild over in Chalong today, guessing same in Patong. Nothing like what it will be in the real monsoon season.

Lesson learned: only go to Jungceylon on sunny days.

I must say it is weird that there is more rain during the "middle season" these last years! It looks like it is raining much more then some years ago. Weather in Phuket was always fine if you avoided "summer months", but now the really "DRY" season looks shorter.

Today was the most powerful rain i have seen in the last month and a half. Not that it compares with the real rainy season storms though.
Wouldn't like to think what would have happened if it was a real storm.

We played golf today and had rain on our last 3 holes, the wind gusts were pretty strong at times and these sails at Jungceylon are big.

Only a week or so they got up.

Jungceylon

One thing I noticed after the rain the other night was that the front sail retained a large pool of water in the middle. I wonder if that had anything to do with today's problem? Oh well.

This is what the problem was... the rain build up in sections of the sail. I was there this evening, and another section was about to give. A guy scaled up the scaffolding and sliced two big cuts to drain the water. The section from yesterday had already been sliced apparantly. So, it was the rain, not the wind... I bet this sail will be redesigned, replaced, or just plain taken down.

Yeah I saw them building scaffold to drain water but assumed that was due to the edge not being tensioned enough any more..

They will have to redesign instead of scrap as during rainy season having it covered will be important..

Was down there today and they still have barriers preventing access over the bridge past the boat and fountains towards Dunkin' Doughnuts.............Tch!

Had to swim back across the lake with the box and no doughnuts suffered any water damage!

Sorted

Today Again!

Dropped in to grab starbucks. Took the ghost town This is Siam underground route for safety reasons (seriously) as it just rained. Noticed there was no wind on the way back so cut through the courtyard.

Came across this site in the pictures.

Tent pulled out from the anchors again. The whole area was blocked off. Debris already cleared.

Wasn't last time enough of a hint?

It is about 20 meters close to the door into the main front part of the mall. So different.

Looks like when it fell down it took out a chunk of an overhang. That store isn't open so I hope no one was under it when it all came crashing down.

Serious design flaw.. not structurally strong enough for wind and rain..

Tho will anything happen before someone gets hurt ??

Having worked in construction for many years I noticed quite a few "faults" with the new Jungceylon.

The foundations must be either poor, or the screed very uneven for the marble to be cracking throughout the first floor shops.

But worst of all, apart from this sail business, is the electricity cable laid above ground, over the cobbled finished path and covering with a strip of gaffa tape With the liklihood none of it being earthed, I hate to think what will happen in the heavy rains and the tape wearing out! A recipe for an electocution.

They have a prevention plan in motion.

Guys running around in white rubber boots with big rags running around sucking up the water and ringing the clothes out in a mop ringer. Seriously.

Will it collapse again?

Coming up on the rainy and windy monsoon season again.

Anyone think the tent will collapse again?

I think it will. This time with injuries.
