Patong Oneway Pedestrian Crossings
I have just been reading this in the Gazette and have to agree, that it is better for driving but a pain in the a*se to cross the road.
Can someone not knock togetther an online petition to the Govenor or the TAT that we can all sign to get them to turn the crossing lights back on and add a few more.

It was always pretty difficult to cross Rat u Thit Rd in the evenings when the old two way traffic was in place. It must be doubly hard now. They really haven't had much thought for pedestrians!

A good idea JP, but Rat u Thit is a long road, and it would need a few along the way to help a great deal. Can't see it happening anytime soon though.

I would be against any sort of crossing unless it is police manned.
Thai drivers simply will not stop for a crossing and i fear it would cause more accidents with tourists assuming it is safe to cross.
I used to stop if people were waiting to cross but this itself was dangerous as a speeding motorbike will fly up the inside of you.

Where they have cones in the middle it is easy to cross as you have a safe stop in the middle, thats is not the case elsewhere.
So more cross points with cones and bumps along the road to slow traffic down would help.

Beach Road seems OK to cross for pedestrians safety-wise as there always seems to be some kind of congestion slowdown keeping a slow manageable and steady pace.
It's Rat-u-tit that is the main cause for concern. Whenever, there "appears" to be a gap in traffic.. well, here comes a speeding motorbike out of nowhere. But, I have to say that crossing as a pedestrian from Sansabai to Bangla over Rat-u-tit is really not much of a problem... As Nicke said, there are cones at the major Rat-u-tit intersections.
Hey, maybe jaywalking will be an enforceable infraction in Patong someday

Just got back from my first trip and didn't have too much trouble crossing Rat-u-tit. The cones did help. It was funny watching people assume cars/bikes stop for pedestrian crossings and russians waving their hands to get people to stop.
The bad thing about it was tuktuks charging me double because they have to go around the block....one c#nt charged me 200baht for 200 metres....bar girl wouldn't walk

I just take a start walking and stare down drivers approach. Waiting is pointless as it will never be safe.
Was it safe before? No. Was it easier? A little. Do I still look both ways? Yep.

Oh...that cost money...not enough revenue from tourists....Ofcourse fligh-over walk should have been built long time ago....When in addition you have
a row of tuk-tuk parked anywhere and block the wiew it is a risky business
to cross the street....the red man\green man now what is that....
Singapore isl...and Phuket isl..about same size around 600 square k.m..
Someone should fly down and learn some about traffic control for those
on two feet and\or four wheels....

I'm working on a new pair of 'Cone-Shoes'
Basically an old pair of trainers (Not mine) There's loads outside Dodgers place and simply glueing a big orange cone on each toe.
I might take a drive over to Patong on the bike tomorrow wearing my 'Cone-Shoes' (If this glue has dried) and maybe the big fcuk off lorries will give me a wider berth.
I'll extensively test them on Rat-U-Tit by crossing backwards and forwards and will write a follow-up report from my bed in Phuket Hospital if they have WiFi there.

Lollipop Men
What we really need is some Lollipop Men to volunteer like those Police Volunteers do. That guy who stands around with his trousers up around his neck selling things from a tray and standing motionless for hours on end would be a good candidate, he could even sell his rubbish whilst you were crossing; I shall discuss this particular business strategy with him when I next bump into him.
Or better still the TAT should employ some of the cute Bar Girls to drees in swimwear and stop the Cars to let us cross.
They have those Bikini Babes who fill up the parking meters in the States whilst on roller skates..........

All around Patong there are what look like zebra crossings painted on the roads. These are bl##dy dangerous for pedestrians who in their native countries can launch themselves on to them and get right of way across the road and the traffic by law should stop for them once they have set foot on them. NOT HERE. Nobody takes a blind bit of notice of them and I wonder why the authorities bother to have them painted.
It's as if they've looked at other countries, seen pedestrians crossing roads at these designated marked out places and thought, we'd better have some of those.........then haven't bothered to tell the motorists what they are for.
