The Western World

i just dont understand when people are so negative about The West
it blows my mind
i respect all the ex-pats decisions to move out to wherever they like
although i do think it is bizarre when an ex-pay doesnt feel the need to go home at all(although people could say i have too much an attachment to home)
anyways, i am not, by any means, pointing this at the ex-pats

again, everyone is different. maybe if people made more of an effort to enjoy the West they would have a better time

It is funny though when I can fly 8,000 miles to the Philippines and buy a bottle of Gatorade and 2 small bags of peanuts for less than I can buy a bottle of Gatorade in the US and the bottle was bottled in the US and shipped to the Philippines.

Says something wrong about either 1)the cost of manufacturing goods in the West due to advertising raising the cost per item or 2)we just grin and bear it when it comes to how the manufacturers price out their consumer goods.

Greed in the boardroom Seafox!! Charge maximum of what people are willing to pay in the US and charge what people can afford to pay in the Phillipines.

Exactly!

And we have to pay 50 cents per bottle just to pay for the stupid Keith Jackson, Florida Gators ad.

I have seen many negative comments about The West on this forum lately, especially BM talking about their own home country. First of all I am not so sure it (for most) is as negative as stated, but also sure that it is not a vacation like going to Thailand. Personally I love United States and if given no other opportunities I will be perfectly happy to grow old (up) and to die here.

When it comes to retirement though, a whole new set of possibilities open up for many people, including a lifetime holiday. In such case choosing to fully of partly move to Thailand is not out of the question, and it does not mean that you are adverse to where you came from.

I my case, I should be done saving for my retirement by year 2010, however, that leaves me 10 years to "get by" before I can start spending the money, which could mean a carrier change that could include a move to somewhere in SE Asia. Should I move to Asia, there will definitely be return trips home and in my case that will then be both Denmark and the United States.

I would not call it greed, unless all profits are greed. Doing business in the US is more expensive than SE Asia. Cost of manufacturing is just one element. Transportation, distributors/wholesalers, retailers, taxes, marketing all contribute to higher costs, which makes the products more expensive for consumers. As for the corporate profits, everyone wants as much as the market can bear, but don't forget competition; there is a limit to how much you can inflate the prices.

Gatorade is actually a great example as they serve two distinct different markets in the US. Consumer/Sport and Industrial Safety (electrolyte replacement products). The beverage is the same, but the industrial products are much less expensive as there are less marketing expenses and no retail outlets.

Imagine this: Cant go out for too long during the winter/autumn because your ears swell up, and you get rashes all over your body.

Yea i have an allergy to cold or had. I also have allergy to cats and dogs which bothers me close to nothing but having an allergy to your country's weather, well that is something to be annoyed about.

Luckily it grew away as i got older, i believe i got it around 15 or so and now its almost gone, i mean i can still notice it but not at all to the same degree as before. Before i got this crap i used to Snowboard every winter, and i actually enjoyed the Swedish winters more then the summers.

Now i hate everything about snow, and cold weather.

But even so, the biggest difference is the feeling of being wealthy in Thailand. I mean im not walking around throwing money around me while in Thailand but atleast i dont feel that i need to keep a constant eye on my spendings.

If i were to have a Swedish income and live in Thailand i would probably never go back to Sweden again. Sure i would miss my family and friends, but they could come and visit.

Now if i was wealthy by western standards then perhaps it would be different then i could move to some other country with a more enjoyable climate. But Sweden would be very far down on my list of prefered country's to live in.

Well atleast i got the gf i want, perhaps when things are better we can move to her country instead.

Yea im done whining now.. Man this probably sounds pathetic, i dont give a shit though

As one of those people that have been down on their home country on this board, please let me explain my position.
I really do love living in Australia, and am very grateful to the Australian taxpayer for giving me access to top quality medical care when I needed it, and finacial support afterwards.
The point I would like to make is that it could be better and the path that we, now, seem to be on is the wrong one!!!
Because of Political Correctness and non-discrimination, the laws and rules governing us are designed for the Lowest Common Denominator, which, in my mind stiffles the the ability of a talented person to shine.
I spent the last 10 years of my working life in a supervisory role and the number of times I was not allowed to let some-one show their true talent because it may show up others to be unsuitable, makes me want to cry!!! The lack of incentive to show talent, is another problem with our society.
All this sort of thing does, is lower the standard for the whole community and that community must go into decline in the long run!!!
I have no problems with the idea of protecting the weak or the disadvantaged, but not at the cost of the perfomers in the community.
During all this rant, I am not writing about myself ( because I know my limitations and had reached them) but about some of the young people I worked with who could have gone on to do wonderfull things, but were held back by a mediocre society!!
The bottom line, for me, is that we must take responsibility for own actions, and to relinquish that responsibility to others (politicians) is to relinquish our freedom!!!

Jim,
With the exception of understanding you climatic allergies I totally hear where you are coming from. When I was a year or two younger than you I was fed up with taxes and politics in Denmark. That did not mean that I had any dislikes for the country or my heritage, quite to the contrary. But still, I had to get out. It took about a year before the right opportunity came about; actually two came at the same time. One to work for a Danish firm in the medical business in USA and another to work for Bang & Olufsen in Australia. I chose USA because it would be easier to go home for a visit. Initially I left for 2 years as a test and rest is history.

If you are truly miserable where you are at, make it a point to try something else. At 24 you can afford to side-track for a year or two. Maybe you will find comfort someplace else or maybe you will get homesick. Whatever you do focus on two things. 1. Make a happy life for yourself. 2. Make sure you don't ignore you financial responsibilities to yourself.

labor costs ae much higher in the US and other western countries

i am not from Australia and dont know your social systems in regards to helping the poor
i cant imagine that it would be so high as to disadvantage anybody though
just liek the US-i am sure people are getting money for doing nothing, but if you want o succeed, i cant see your social system holding you back

Luckily we all have passports and can travel & move as we like. Although I do moan about some countries in the West, I'll eventually shut-up and move on to other places.

One thing about the Great West though I must say really pisses me of is how they ruin places all over the world with their Super Malls, MC D's, KFC's and all that. I can imaging that at one point it will all look more or less the same.

but who cares!!
that wouldnt even equate in my mind
there is enough authentic places all over the world in every country to balance it out
for me-i just look at it as an abundance of choices

If installing a KFC ruins a place you should blame the local government who invite them, or at least allow them to move in. Any company will take advantage of an opportunity. I dislike their presence as much as you do, but I don't fault them.

I understand how that works.

The question was why ppl are negative about the west and that's could be one reason which pop's my mind - "The world get's Westernized and ppl try to escape it."

Marc, you say "Who cares", which sounds more like "You don't care" ; but you asked a open question so be open to answers you get and add them to your list ;-)

You are right
I should have worded it better
If you did notice, I have responded to every reply so I am reading people's reply and taking in their concerns and complaints
All I meant to say is "franchises" to me would be a very little worry
I am somewhat spoiled being back in nyc and having incredible food options everywhere u turn
I do apologize for my harsh response

Thailand you don't have to make an effort to have fun. You just do without trying.

You only have X numbers of years to live. By now you have already lived Y number of years. Why not go somewhere else for the remaining Z years? The earth is big and your home town is small. Tourism and living elsewhere aren't the same.

Home is where I live now. Where I was born, or where I grew up isn't home.

Generally the west sucks. Although I am debating a European summer vacation until I think about the cost

I don't go looking for fun
I have fun almost everyday I live, no matter where I am
That was kind of my point

Again, I don't disagree with anyone's desire to live somwhere different
I have chosen to live away from my home since I have been 19

I just disagree with people being so anti-west
