Bang Mud (floating) Seafood Restaurant Something different
Had one of my best seafood experiences (ever) the other day.
Directions: We drove towards Phuket Town and then past Super Cheap. We took the first U-turn and then the second road to the left. Continued for about 5 minutes to the end. At the pier (Laem Hin) we got a long-tail to carry us the 3 minute ride to the floating Bang Mud restaurant (near Koh Maphrao).
Classic Thai look. Some plastic chairs on a wooden floater (avoid high-heels!). The fish is aliver and kicking in the nets surounding the place. Guaranteed fresh in other words. The 7 of us got 4 snappers (with various curry / chili sauces, try the 3 flavor sauce!), a crab yellow curry, steamed vegetables, 4 (huge) fried rice dishes, some streamed prawns and deep-fried shrimps. Oh, and 10 large Heinekens plus water and sodas. All in all around 3K baht.
Definitely well worth a visit if youre a group of people. Maybe combined with a shopping trip to Phuket Town. Try to avoid the low tide though.

Yeah yeah, you'll take anything if it's free. Amazing what you'd walk out of Taipan with
Just kidding, but that is the restaurant we were going to head to. Next time will be a certainty as the gf now has time off with her new job.

We had our company Xmas dinner there - excellent seafood and really very cheap. A great place to go for something different to the norm.

We generally take out-of-towners there as it's very different as Hobbsy said. The prices are great and the seafood doesn't get any fresher than them taking it out of the water nets they have in the base of their restaurant....

Thai guy I was supposed to do some business with took me and Gee there, great food but we were there at low tide, all the mud was covered by mudhopper fish, scrapping all the time and occasionally having a go at a small crab aswell. So entertainment and great food.

I actually prefer the food at Laem Hin Seafood, but haven't been there for a while, as they're building a big new jetty which makes the view rather ugly at the moment. If you get a longtail over to the floating restaurants, ask your driver to cruise round Koh Maphrao after lunch. Lovely little island. I think we paid about 500 Baht for the longtail, and he dropped us off at a beach on the island for a while too.
Also from Laem Hin you can get over to Koh Rang Yai.
Phuket's east coast is full of great places that (thankfully) most tourists don't know about and can't be bothered to get to even if they do!

The cool thing is you can play with your food before you eat it. A little thai kid was showing us tricks one of the fish could do. He seemed attached to it so I didn't eat that one.
Then the rain storm rolled in. The wind was blowing the rain blocker plastic like crazy. I found it funny. Realized I was the only one laughing. Was with the extended thai family and realized I was the only one that can swim.
