Hey everybody!
I have been a member of the board for a while and have noticed that the subject of a trip to Phi Phi does arise from time to time. I thought I'd share my 2 cents on the subject as I have just come off the island after working 2 months at a dive shop.
Why go?
Phi Phi is a major backpacker destination, but they are trying to raise the profile and attract more families. However, the majority of farangs on the island are Scandinavian backpackers (70 %) with the rest a mix of Brits, Americans, Germans and Israelis. It is NOT a monger destination, but if you are under 35, fit and enjoy Swedish blondes this might be the best place in Thailand to score! It also has nice beaches, a very laid-back atmoshpere (no traffic on the island) and excellent diving & snorkelling!
Why not go?
If you have a Thai GF already, my advice is not to bring her! I think most BM's not have a problem with the "stigma" of having a Thai GF, but I think the GF would not enjoy the experience as they do stand out a lot more on Phi Phi than otherwise on Phuket.
If you do not have the time for more than a daytrip, do not go! You will be in a large group shepherded around, snorkel with 100's of Asians in a life vest (which can be funny, but it is not why you signed up), you will have a lousy lunch and spend most of your time en route. Do yourself a favor and spent one night at least.
Also, if you have had enough with naive, tree-hugging, slightly feral, overpriviliged Western youth looking to find themselves - stay away!
If you think you fall in the first category, here some advice:
Go diving!
Best diving in Thailand outside Similan Islands! Turtles, lepard sharks, octopuss, barracudas, sea snakes and tons of reef fish! Most local dives were good, but the Kingcruiser wreck can have really strong currents. Snorkelling is also good fun!
Go to a beach bar!
Hippes and Carpe Diem are two bars right on the beach with OK music and fire shows every night. Thai's and some farang that juggle with sticks etc with the ends on fire. Not breathtaking, but good fun. Should start after 10 pm
Go to Maya Bay!
This is the major tourist attraction after Leo DiCaprio did the movie "The Beach" after the Alex Garland novel. The movie is shit, but the book is OK! Anyway, parts of the movie was shot here and it is a nice beach. Go in the afternoon after all the daytrippers from Phuket has left (around 3 pm)!
Spend a bit more on accommodation!
The island is loaded with penniless backpackers, so spend a bit more to get away and get better value for your money. 2000 - 3000 baht per night should get you a nice place with A/C, swimming pool and good views.
After 2 - 3 days, get off the island!
Everybody else does... there's not much more to do!
General info
Phi Phi is in fact two islands (Phi Phi Don/Phi Phi Ley) - both small and beautiful. Don is the bigger island and the populated one. Ferries run twice a day (morning/afternoon) and the boat ride ride takes 1,5 - 2 hours. Estimate another hour to get to Rassada Pier, Phuket town.
LivinLoS - I wrote "stigma" with a purpose! However, I have read in other threads that BM's have had negative reactions from their GF on trips to Phi Phi! I also know that two female instructors at the dive shop I worked out of principle never tried to book people with Thai GF's for dive trips as "they could not stand such guys".
I think it sucks that some have that attitude, but they do and it may make a trip to Phi Phi less enjoyable. However, I hope readers of the thread will make up their own mind!
Yeah it sucks that some people have that attitude.. And its by tolerating people with that attitude that it can continue..
Its one thing that back in the west people may have preconceived ideas but for Thai girls in a relationship with a farang to have that kind of shit from farangs, while in her own country.. I mean WTF is that about !!!
So I will continue to go to Phi Phi or anywhere else I damn well please and people with an attitude can still get ****ed.

Have to agree with you there LiL!!!!
Since when has an island in Thailand been run by the attitudes of Farangs????
And to actively discourage Thais from diving and enjoying their own reefs ( by Farang women!!!) is mind boggling!!!

I think it was cool that OZlover did a quick guide to Phi Phi - I think that was the point of his post.
Anyway, I have also spent a lot of time on koh phi phi, though all but 2 nights were before the Tsunami. I have been there with my TGF and it is true that you get a lot of disapproving looks from the righteous crowd. Nothing wrong with pointing it out. His advice to avoid it was to not bring you TG, well, it isn't my advice but if some dudes are uncomfortable in that situation at least he mentionned it for them to make their own decision. No reason to jump on the guy for expressing his opinion.
Anyway, I used to love koh phi phi when they had a little bar named Karma bar. It was right next to Hippie bar and it is remodeled as a new bar now with 2 levels. But, back in the day, when that end of phi phi wasn't so busy, I could hang out there all night chatting with the bartenders or some of the local farangs and listening to great music. Anyway, Hippies bar owned the land, made Karma bar sell out or abandon, and then, 1 month later came the tsunami. So I guess the Karma owners had good Karma to get out when they did!!
Karma bar is now down on Koh Lippe.. Went down and saw owners last month, they got married on the beach..
Its in my pics in a thread a month or two back..
Also I agree that the OP way have just been warning.. But really when you write about the 'stigma' of having a TGF while living in Thailand your too far up your own ass.. And if your cowed by the opinion of some silly farang slappers who work as underpaid dive jockeys I suggest you pull out the front of your shorts and check you've not been neutered yet..

Chill LiL - you and me have been with our partners a long time and they are both VERY capable of defending themselves, but more timid types may well find that ozlovers advice is well placed.
I'd say that if you had a new 'rent-a-girlfriend' situation and were just getting to know each other then she could feel (or be made to feel) outside her comfort zone there. For sure its not right that others are judgemental but we know what the land of the FWC's is really like - so dont think the OP meant to be offensive.
The synopsis of Phi Phi I think is pretty good - 2 nights more then enough there (same goes for Koh Phang Ngan).
Hmm… I thought it was a good synopsis too (from my very limited experience!). Granted, I was only over there for one night and I’m no expert on LOS in general, only there once blah blah…
I went over with a Thai girl and she hated the place, well not so much hated the Island, but didn't like the downright rude and obnoxious backpackers that were constantly ogling her up and down, this was "full on" ogling and they were even throwing comments at her and myself and it wasn't just an isolated incident. I haven’t been as close to giving someone a slap in years, at one point I was seething with rage after about 3 separate incidents one after another in different locations... Little Gobshite Fcuks! Sorry, my hangover today is getting me a little excited thinking about it!
Just my experience… Beautiful Island for sure, but I wouldn’t be in any rush back out there.

LiL will take a chill pill..
Just wonder why people tolerate this kind of shit (is it cause its done by women).. Imagine if they didnt take a booking because someone was black, you wouldnt tolerate it.

totally agree with LIL's comments and attitude,do not tolerate the snide comments made by the seahags.the scandanavian mafia on koh lanta are the same and not a few times i've had to butt in when the prats were quite openly discussing in english about me and a local friend,i usually start with a comment like %*c* off and mind your own%**£in& business you narrow minded %**@s.
Yeah those attitudes pee me off (excuse the pun). Western women harking on about how sad all these blokes are blah blah blah.
Yet in places like Boracay and Bali where the women are doing exactly the same thing albeit indirectly paying ,then that's fine. No one should even say a word!
Double standards!
Why not go?

I hope you find this useful! Have a nice trip!
I've just done exactly this, I know it's not ideal but some people are on limited time and want to see as much as they can. This is a pretty narrow view to my mind, I don't particularly want to be a numpty tourist but at the end of the day most of us are exactly that; tourists.
For what it's worth, my day was ok. We were whisked off everywhere pretty quickly, but I have a short attention span anyway, and lunch was excellent. I got the opportunity for a few pictures, the boat guys were good fun and I have now seen a bit more of Thailand, what's so bad about that?
I don't know about the 'stigma' thing, my wife isn't here with me, but my buddy had no issues today and they were the only mixed couple on our trip. I kind of take the point, but the fewer of us that tell bigotted self-righteous f***wits to mind their manners then the more of them will get away with it.
Mmmm I kinda see what he is saying to a point, I do remember getting a few looks from people there myself (not many that I noticed) but then not one person has every made a comment to my face, Now the reason for that maybe down to the fact that I am youngish and maybe they thought the girls were not bar girls or didnt say anything in case they were wrong, Where as if I was a bit older with a much younger girl I would be more of a stand-out for the bigots to pounce... In saying that Barcardi73 is really ancient looking and he didnt have any problems...555555..
Also I noticed that the guys on the island were not really as friendly as in other places but maybe that was because I was with Thai girl?
I found that the majority of them all walk around like they were gods gift to women and are quite loud and some of them quite abnoxious, The girls were pretty much the same although I talked to a few who were alright to be honest...
Unfortunatly overall I would say there is a little bit of truth in it from what I have personally seen and sensed there, It would would not turn me off going back there though as I couldnt give a sh1t what people who dont know me think or say about me, But if you are the kinda person who gets a little paranoid and cannot handle a few dirty looks, And are the kinda person who does care about other peoples opinions, Even when you dont know them, Then I would probably stay away unless you were in a group were you and the girl would feel more comfortable

Point taken.
I am the "kind of person" who gets a little uptight by nasty and rude comments made to a person I'm with or to a lesser extent made to myself... Especially when these comments are designed and do upset the person I’m with! Whether they are a TG a European Girl or any other person who may be in some way different.

Yes, definitely.
Btw that was just a general statment not to you in particular...
See I dont really know what kinda things where said to you, And if they were said directly to ur face or the girls face? Or whether you just over heard someone saying something walking past or across from your table?
I can only comment on what I have personally seen and your experience could have been totally different worse and different to mine, As I said because I am youngish I probably didnt get it as bad as you did, And that is not ment as an insult to you but just the way these kind of bigots would think... I am actually quite interested to hear about what your experience was exactly, Obviously its cool if its not something you wish to go into detail about, I understand if your alright talking about it I would be interested in...
What exactly was said to you? And were these comments made directly to your faces or in what kinda circumstances? See i was more talking about being able to turn a blind eye to the dirty looks and people saying things in the background... But if a Farang (If it was a Thai I would just walk away although I would be really pissed) actually was to say really nasty things to my face and the girls face, That would probably be a different story altogether and I would probably smack the fcuker!!
One year ago, I went to Phi Phi Islands on a one night trip with Farang lady in tow, so cannot comment too much on on the TG issue. To the extend I have experience and knowledge I think the guide is right on. Spend at least a night and at most two; unless you thrive in a secluded environment.
We stayed at the Palm Beach Resort (Holiday Inn) on the northern part of the Island. The first day we rented a long-tail boat for the day (approx. 1500 baht). Went from one good spot to another and had lunch on the center of the island; which was the only time we had any interaction with people outside of the hotel.
If you are going just to kick back for a couple of days and tour the waters, I can highly recommend the Palm Beach Resort and the best I can judge it would be a fine way to spend some private time with a girl of your choice.
I have attached a few pics from Phi Phi. Most are from the long-tail boat tour, there rest are from the hotel.
