Yes in a way its little strange,Finnair fly a lot of direct rutes to BKK these days.
Maybee a historic thing why they keep tothemselfs even nowadays, their language is the only one in Scandi
only the Finns anderstand, very diffrent from Danish,Swedish and Norwegian, even Islandish is more easy to anderstand(old Norwegian)
They have always been more East then West oriented people.
Nice people to drink with,if they just leave the knife home

That's because most Finn's I met are really geeks 5555

Just joking, but they are down to earth ppl who I don't like to waste their time on discussion boards.

Let's face it...and that's a question to many of you:

If you put all the effort & time as you put into reading/writing this board --> but now into your job (whatever that is), you'll be a millionair and could retire (exeption LiL) in LOS sooner as you might think ;-))

Just so there is not confusion, Finland is not part of Scandinavia (Sweden Norway and Denmark), but it is part of the Nordic countries.

Casually including Finland as part of Scandinavia is not uncommon, especially by those outside of the Nordic countries.

Board Members from Finland: TOMPPA, Trograin and reissaaja, but neither have posted in a long time.

Nja thats more some historic babl like this statment on the net:
Quote:
Greeks and Romans were the first to write about Scandinavia. They had a vague knowledge about what they called "an island on the edge of the civilized world", populated by the barbarian tribes from Germania. Geographically speaking, the Scandinavian peninsula is a territory shared by Norway, Sweden and northern Finland. The Scandinavian countries would therefore only be Norway and Sweden.

Today the Finns are seen as a part of scandi for ages by us who lives here

Some needs to update wikipedia..
Scandinavia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Excerpt:
Scandinavia is a historical and geographical region centered on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe and includes the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The other Nordic countries, Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, are also sometimes included because of their close historic and cultural relations to Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

I have been lurking around, but never posted or intoduced myself. Sorry about that. I've found this forum very useful and used information in LOS. Well, once. Over 30 years English is teached from 3. grade in schools, so many people can communicate in English. Why Finns are not loud here I don't know. Maybe they have not found this forum or they are like me reading only. I did some googling and found this site:
Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland: Countries and regions: The Nordic countries
New info also for me.

Interesting stereotypes flying around here... I'm not sure why there aren't so many Finns doing the expat thing here but there are plenty of tourists, I can assure you. In the busy season you only have to walk around in Kata/Karon and every other person you pass seems to be nattering on in Finnish. Personally I've found that wherever I go, even the most unlikely places like remote Indonesian islands, I always find Finns there. It's quite unnerving really. We do travel a lot, just not in great numbers as there aren't that many of us!

The Scandinavia thing - technically we are not Scandinavians and I will be the first to set anyone straight on that, but I confess that I do sometimes refer to myself as Scandinavian, just because I look the part. It's true that Finnish is a very different language from Swedish, Norwegian and Danish, but in other ways Finland really is not that different from those countries. I don't buy this 'more east than west' argument, that's just rubbish. Historically maybe but not in the modern day and age.

The English language question - most young Finns speak reasonably good English, but the older generation not so much. Perhaps that's another reason for the lack of Finnish expats of mature age here My mum & dad are in their sixties and only understand a little English, never would try to speak themselves. More's the pity as I am engaged to a Brit.

But yes, I also have only met one Finnish guy with a Thai girlfriend, and he's now gone off to Oz to work, all others have been tourists.

Maybe they are all too busy off racing around in Rally Cars, as it seems they are the best in the world at it!!!!!
(speaking.... per head of population)
